Is there too much in this cupboard?

I mentioned on a thread recently that I'm amazed how kitchen cupboards stay attached to the wall considering the weight in them. A few other posters replied saying that they've known cupboards fall off the wall. I have been mulling it over and don't know what to do. Swapping them to another cupboard will be upheaval in my kitchen but I may have a ticking time bomb on my hands if I don't.
Is there too much in here? Should I move them or not worry?

The bottom shelf looks very heavy on both sides.

If it’s an external or solid wall and the cupboards are properly bolted on I’m sure it’s fine. If it’s a plasterboard wall then I don’t know.

Angel2702 · 19/01/2021 14:28

I wouldn’t risk putting heavy plates and bowls in a top cupboard. Thinking about it I’ve never seen them stored in a wall cupboard, everyone I know has them in bottom cupboards with lighter items in the wall cupboards.

Snackz · 19/01/2021 14:35

Looks like my cupboard! Smile I'd definitely reduce what you have in there. Do you have anywhere you can store bits you don't use all the time? Smile

PS . Love the bowls! Very colourful.

ThatDamnKrampus · 19/01/2021 14:39

Gosh, if that is too much then I am in trouble! I would consider that a reasonable amount. If you can't use space as it is designed (a cupboard to hold plates and cups) then it is pointless being there!

ApolloandDaphne · 19/01/2021 14:39

I keep my plates etc in a top cupboard, I always have. I have never known a cupboard to come away from the wall.

Em8725 · 19/01/2021 14:41

I had a wall cupboard full to the brim of tins and packets of pasta. When my kitchen fitter came to quote for a new kitchen he made me take everything out of it as he’d noticed it wasn’t properly bolted. He fixed it for me the best he could. That was not fun, I did have a ticking bomb on my hands as it was only held up by the cupboards next to it 😬. I don’t keep anything heavy in the wall ones now, it’s not worth the risk.

Dinosauraddict · 19/01/2021 14:41

I've always kept plates and bowls in a top cupboard!

trilbydoll · 19/01/2021 14:42

How old is your house and how sturdy are the walls? That would have already slid off an internal wall in a new build but if you live in a 15th century stone cottage you are probably okay.

Honeyroar · 19/01/2021 14:43

How long have they been like that? Are the walls they’re screwed into modern or is it a fairly substantial house/wall?

It’s perfectly common to have crockery in an upper cupboard- some people even have plate racks on the wall that hold a lot of plates.

Some of my upper cupboards have food in. One probably has 40 tins in. Another has big bags of flours, sugars and other baking products. Then I’ve got a row of cookery books on top of the cupboards. That’s got to be more weight than your crockery!

TwelvePaws · 19/01/2021 14:45

The top and middle shelf look fine. The bottom shelf stuff does look very heavy. I keep plates in the top cupboards but I don’t keep as many as you have in one cupboard.

Your cupboard is still on the wall though so it’s probably fine. 😬

Honestly? It makes me feel queasy Envy
When I was a child, a kitchen cupboard fell off a wall and missed my ankle by about 1cm...it would have been snapped and crushed, and I'm always wary about how much I put in mine.
I have v expensive crockery (because I used to work for a home furnishings company) and I store all mine in a sideboard so there's no chance of falling. I even check the legs on a regular basis so there's no chance of toppling either Blush

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 19/01/2021 14:56

It's a newish extension, I'm not sure how old exactly maybe 20ish years old.
It's on a party wall.
I've used that cupboard for dinnerware since October.
I think I'll have a move around at the weekend.

bloody hell...that's a tidy cupboard!

I have similar amounts of stuff and I keep them in a base unit rather than a wall one

SenorFrog · 19/01/2021 15:11

My cupboards had loads more than that in, when I had my kitchen redone after 20 years they struggled to get the cupboards down. No bloody way were they ever going to fall off.

McCorona · 19/01/2021 15:14

My crockery has been in a wall cupboard for 20 years. Another walled cupboard is full of tinned food. I had never even considered it until I read this thread!
OhMsBeliever · 19/01/2021 15:14

Blimey, I've never even thought about the cupboards falling off the wall. My kitchen is bloody old though, it's from the 90s (quite hideous, it's always on Homes Under The Hammer being ripped out) so I guess it's quite sturdy.

icelollycraving · 19/01/2021 15:17

Doesn’t look too much to me. Mine are tidy but full!

Whenwillow · 19/01/2021 15:25

I'd never thought about it! I've got more than that in my one wall mounted cupboard.
I had better go and sort it out!

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 19/01/2021 19:38

Interesting that there's a difference of opinion on this.
I am still going to go with the base cupboard option and have a rejig the weekend.
Thanks for all of your advice and opinions

How has nobody asked this yet?! Where is your gorgeous crockery from and is it microwave and dishwasher safe, please?

ontheplace · 19/01/2021 19:42

Particularly bottom left, and middle and top right.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 19/01/2021 19:44

@ontheplace It's dishwasher and microwave safe. From Morrisons

Oh goodness! I've got a cupboard like that full of cookery books. This is making me worry now!

PattyPan · 19/01/2021 20:18

A cupboard fell off the wall while I was at uni when there was hardly anything in it so I am a bit wary of my very heavy wall cupboard of tins, rice etc but it’s coping so far, must be more about the fixings🤞

Whatthebloodyell · 19/01/2021 22:05

From Morrison’s? I’m Impressed!
