Navy wall - F&B?!

We want to paint a feature wall in our open plan area and want to go with a navy colour.

The room is quite big (a new build apartment, if helpful), though is a rectangle (30'2" x 14'8").

It has floor to ceiling windows on one wall (a shorter 14" end) and no windows in the rest of the room.

We want one feature wall. This will be half of one of the longer sides (one of the longer walls is broken up by a doorway out into the hallway. This doorway separates the living area from the kitchen area. We want to paint a feature wall on the part of the long wall that comprises the living area).

So far all the walls are (new build) white. Our furniture is bluey/grey, different wood tones, quite earthy. The feature wall will be perpendicular to the wall with the big windows.

We've seen F&B Stiffkey and F&B and F&B Hague. Which one is better?

Also people on B&Q reviews don't seem to rate the quality of F&B - what other navy paints are good, and what other products (primers etc) will we need?!

Thanks Smile

Hague blue - paint is fine!

colette100 · 16/01/2021 11:32

Old Navy from Benjamin Moore is deep and rich.
Plimsoll from the Paint & Paper Library is my favourite.

Coverage for both of these is superior to that of F&B.

Hague Blue & Scotch Blue - compare their attributes at a glance.

I agree with Benjamin Moore over F&B, its much better. They have tons of colours too.

I've used Dock Blue (Little Greene) and its a lovely true navy.

Dulux Sapphire Salute is a lovely colour and goes on beautifully

Hague Blue is great, but use a cheaper match for the first coat to save money

Chillypenguin · 16/01/2021 16:06

We used both little greene paint and F and B and little greene was by far better - easier to paint with and so far, much more hard wearing.

I think their navy is Hicks Blue

This.

Watching with interest. Though I'm thinking of going a slightly flatter off navy greyish/blue. Happy to accept recommendations!

Can I just ask collette 100 how you actually interpret the colour charts and wheels you posted? How do you use them?

FatimaLovesBread · 16/01/2021 22:56

Little Greene hicks blue is fab

Misty9 · 16/01/2021 22:57

I've recently painted dulux sapphire salute in my lounge on one wall and love it. Goes on beautifully and barely needed a second coat. I got testers of Hague blue and Stiffkey blue but both were more greeny than I wanted. I'll look for my tester photo...

Argh it didn't post the photo Confused

Misty9 · 16/01/2021 22:59

Oops... It did... Sapphire salute is the middle tester

Londonmummy66 · 16/01/2021 23:10

We did the whole of our dining room in Railings which is just brilliant and a bit less green than your suggestions. The matte texture really comes into its own with these darker shades.

atomicnotsoblonde · 16/01/2021 23:15

@Misty9 what colour is the right hand one of your testers? I'm after dark but with green tones. Love your room btw!

I was trying to remember that when I posted...! I think it's Hague blue. That's the darker one I'm pretty sure. And thank you Grin I love it too.

A lot depends on light. My friend has her living room in Hague blue and is jealous of mine now - I thought hers was gorgeous but it didn't look the same in mine!

oobedobe · 16/01/2021 23:24

We used Van Dusen blue from Benjamin Moore, I love it - a solid rich navy with out being too black or grey toned. Hale Navy is darker, matte finish.

F&B Stiffkey Blue is gorgeous. I used it for a feature wall in my living room.

I find F&B goes on well and covers nicely; I painted over previous Dulux matt paint using a long pile roller, not sure whether that makes a difference...

Hi - the details of each colour are gathered via objective colour measurement. The same the paint industry uses to conceive, make and match colours in the first place.

It uses a standardised light source, so every colour is measured under the same conditions.

Hue - to which Hue Family does a colour belong?
(This includes ALL whites/greys/blacks as well as more saturated clrs.)

Value - how light or dark does a colour appear?
(Higher the Value = lighter the colour)

Chroma - How colourful & strong or how weak & near to neutral?
(True neutral = 0) So the lower the Chroma = closer to neutral)

LRV - Light Reflectance Value
How much light does a colour reflect back into a space?
(Higher the LRV - the lighter the colour)

All these are like a colour’s DNA. They are particularly helpful when comparing similar colours. They can answer all these questions,

Which Hue Family does it belong? (Uber useful looking at greys)
Which is lightest?
Which is darkest?
Which is most colourful?
Which is more neutral?
Which is cleaner?
Which is dirtier?
Which absorbs more light?
Which will bounce more light around?

Very different approach to using personally subjective ‘undertones’.

And as we know, light is BOSS when it comes to colour, because we have them set into a particular point on our wheel. ( Factual colour) if they look different when viewed in our space and light at home, (Actual colour) we have a pivot point from which to move, with reason, to find an alternative colour to better fit our needs.

E.g. my grey paint turned purple! Move away from this Hue Family neighbourhood (Hue) and find something with the same Value & Chroma from a few degrees more clockwise.

Actually quite fun to use once you begin to think about colour in a different way!

We went over F&B Stiffkey which was here and used F&B Hague Blue as felt the former wasn’t dark enough

We painted a room in this colour and I do love the colour, it's a very warm cosy blue, but.... god it marks a lot! Have you found that? Sometimes I wonder if it's down to using moisturisers because my husband doesn't find the same problem quite as much.
NotMaryWhitehouse · 17/01/2021 09:37

Ok loads of you used sapphire salute! Anybody else find the same problem with it marking?

I would second the poster who said it barely needed a second coat.

colette100 · 17/01/2021 09:44

It’s cool as it also provides a vocabulary to describe colours in a really detailed way - without a tonne of extra adjectives.

Anyone who can read a clock-face or compass can get their head around these once they’ve had a little time to absorb what they mean.

Quite quickly you can see where two colours are similar and where they differ most.

We have Wickes Scrubbable in Admiral and it’s the best paint I have ever used.
