Hello, I'm moving into our new terraced home soon, and it needs loads of work. The living room (attached) is small but I have always wanted a fitted window seat...do you think it would look silly having one in this room, because it isnt a gorgeous big room? Bear in mind I'm having new windows, fireplace, carpet x

No it would look lovely. My friend has a window seat and her sitting room is very similar...normal, Edwardian house...small rooms...bow window...very nice!

QuentinQuarantino · 02/11/2020 12:43

It would look lovely.

I've also always wanted a window seat!

The only thing I'd be mindful of is the space it might take up in a small room. Is there somewhere else for Xmas tree to go for eg.

Conversely, you could go for a seat that has storage under the seat bit which would be great for small room!

Ninkanink · 02/11/2020 12:44

No of course it won’t look silly, it’ll look really lovely!

But you’ll have to wait until after Christmas, because now that you have that window you know that you’re required to put a lovely Christmas tree there to be enjoyed from outside! 🎄🎄🎄

Or you could buy/have made a removable one, I guess!

FrustratoPotato · 02/11/2020 12:46

We have a front window almost identical to yours and I have plans for a window seat. Pinterest has some really great tutorials for building one.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 02/11/2020 12:46

It would be perfect and is a really good use of the bay space in a small room. I'd build storage in underneath.

1000umbrellas · 02/11/2020 12:47

I think it would look nice but you should consider whether you want to sit on it much. I have a little one in my bedroom but as you can't lean back it's not that comfy to relax on. A window seat will look neater but if you're after somewhere to watch TV/read a book a sofa or chair that fits the space might be more practical.

averythinline · 02/11/2020 12:51

I love the look of window seats but in an angled bay they are not great for sitting on...better to get a statement chair/chaise longue ..

Ninkanink · 02/11/2020 12:59

I’m sure there’s a way to build in a back and use cushions for extra comfort which would make it comfortable.

What's not to love

However the idea of a lovely chair and foot stool is also a good one, of course! And a little side table for the stack of books and a glass of wine/whisky/cognac! Wink

But if you’ve always dreamt of a window seat a chair just won’t be the same...

WellTidy · 02/11/2020 13:03

I think it would look lovely, and you could create storage underneath, but I know that if it were me, I would not use it for sitting in as I would find it unsupportive and therefore uncomfortable. I think I personally would prefer a chair and a small table. But it absolutely would look lovely.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 02/11/2020 13:07

It would look lovely, but if you have dogs it will be a stepping stone for them to nose out the window 😂

Whatsnewpussyhat · 02/11/2020 13:11

Every bay I've had has been prone to damp.
Personally, I'd wait until you have the rest of your furniture in before committing to it.

Looks nice but will you actually use it? Not massively comfortable and your view is the houses across the road.

Ninkanink · 02/11/2020 13:14

Oh that’s a good point! I think my DH would veto it on that account, which is fair enough really.

stella1know · 02/11/2020 13:14

It really would look lovely but there Isn’t a radiator there. So it would be cold in the Winter to sit there, and you would have to ensure you could check on the wall regularly otherwise you will have mould. So you cant have a built-in window seat.

Pokerfaced · 02/11/2020 13:17

If you had the seat at the level of the current sill, wouldn’t it be rather uncomfortably high up for sitting on?

I would think about whether you would really use it, and whether, depending on how bright the room is/what aspect it has, whether someone sitting on a window seat would block enough light to make the room gloomy for other people in it.

HardAsSnails · 02/11/2020 14:39

Done well, it could look lovely, but they can have a tendency to look like and be as uncomfortable as caravan seats!

Ninkanink · 02/11/2020 15:20

If it were me I’d have it built to be freestanding but filling the space nicely, with a built up back to the level of the sill. Then I would add plenty of cushions for comfort. I would leave a gap of two or three inches between the outer wall and the unit for plenty of air/heat to circulate which should be enough to prevent damp and mould/mildew.

Mosaic123 · 02/11/2020 18:30

Could it be made comfortable enough to be a spare bed? And with storage underneath.

MrsR87 · 02/11/2020 18:34

I think it would look great and make good use of the space...especially if it had storage inside!

senua · 02/11/2020 18:39

Wouldn't it get in the way when you were drawing the curtains? You'd have to reach across and bash your shins.
A pouffe or a comfy-chair-and-side-table combo might be preferable.

FortunesFave · 02/11/2020 20:23

Senua people usually change the rod so it goes directly over the edge...not over the windows but over the wall outside.

Saz12 · 02/11/2020 22:43

Window seats always look great!

But they’re chilly on yr back.

Sweetchillijam · 02/11/2020 22:48

My friend has a big room and a bay window and she has one and it looks fab. I think the wood on the bottom of it is painted a bright pastel blue and she has lots of colours and eclectic ‘bits and bats’ in the room but it looks lovely.

StCharlotte · 02/11/2020 23:00

I've got one with storage and so has my neighbour. Not damp. It's one of my favourite things. Christmas tree goes on top - just have to remember to take out anything we're going to need first Grin

Go for it.
