Why is it so hard to find a good kitchen bin?

For the love of God, where can I find a normal one?

I don't want battery operated heat sensors that break after a month. I don't want lots of tiny compartments that fit one recyclable thing in each of them. I don't want clever interior design that traps and rips the bin bag. I don't want a cylindrical bin that is too narrow, so most things that go in the bin get wedged. I don't want retro dustbin-shaped bins where you have to unclip the thing with both hands and hold the lid with one hand before you can put a bottle top in it. I'd prefer not to take out a second mortgage for it. But I don't want cheap plastic either.

I just need a chunky, solid, rectangular metal pedal bin which opens easily, will agree to release the bin bag from its casing when full and can be wiped clean. 70-80L ideally.

Do they exist?

We have a rectangular pedal bin but only 40L as like to empty it often. It was from TK Maxx.

dolphinpose · 27/10/2020 08:20

Thanks Greta. TKMaxx is a good idea. I haven't looked there.

I have found the perfect bin on a professional chef's kitchen site but it is £350!

You'd think there would be a simple, wide topped, easy to empty, large silver pedal bin somewhere on the high street.

Our bin just broke, but it was 13 years old (wedding present). Think dh has managed a patch job to fix it.

It always gets compliments. Once it finally goes we will shed a tear...

This is it... it definitely wasn't THAT price when I put it on our wedding list Shock.

I've just realised you can buy spare parts to ours Smile. New pins only £4.99. Happy fecking days.

We love our bin (and we've loads of bin liners in stock (you have to buy special ones but they aren't too badly priced)).

missmouse101 · 27/10/2020 08:40

I cant stand big bins stationed in the kitchen. We have an old rectangular mop bucket lined with a bag that's in the cupboard under the sink, out of sight. It's fabulous.

AriettyHomily · 27/10/2020 08:57

We've got a brabantia one. I hate it and don't use it. Everyone in my house insists if ramming stuff in and then you can't get the bag out without it ripping.

I hang a compostable bag on the kitchen door handle and chuck it out when it's full.

FidgetWonkham · 27/10/2020 09:03

I have a simple human bin that fits inside a cupboard. It’s great and no kitchen bin taking up floor space in my small kitchen!

nogooddeedgoesunpunished · 27/10/2020 09:06

Dying to know what a human bin is ?!

Hazelmazel · 27/10/2020 09:11

nogooddeed simplehuman is a homeward brand.

I recently bought this bin
AmazonBasics Rectangle Soft-Close Dustbin with Steel Bar Pedal - 40L www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PCXZ14V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Dp-LFb85FYWAJ?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
40l so a bit smaller than you want but it's brilliant. Steel, soft close, easy to empty.

Hazelmazel · 27/10/2020 09:11

*homeware not homeward Hmm

This is mine Brabantia and I will tell you why I love it, the touch lid means that I can use my foot to open the bin lid if my hands are full, or my elbow. It has a wide opening which means it rarely gets any food on it.

It is easy to lift the bin liner out, so much so that I don't do it, my son does. He has done it since he was 10. The bin has a strict schedule of being emptied on 2 specific days one of which is the bin collection day. The two side handles allow you to hook the bin liner handles around it, we don't use Brabantia ones but Costco ones and they come with handles not the pull handle things. Plus the handles make it easy to lift and move the bin.

It it also at least 12 years old and came with a replacement bin lid closing thing but we have not yet replaced it. My children are now 17 and 14 meaning the bin lid was not opened with care by them when they were little.

It does come with a hefty price tag but it is solid but not heavy. Considering I have had it so long it has been worth the money.

Same here. It irritates me every time I use it.

I really like the Amazon one but would prefer it a little bigger. Same design in 60L instead of just 40L would be perfect.

I'm struggling to see how you'd open it with your foot...

I have the Brabantia Bo touch bin on legs. It is a split bin with 2 x 30 litre compartments which I use for general waste and recycling. It can however also be bought with one large 60 litre compartment and without the legs. No problem at all with bags, I buy the brabantia perfect fit bags and they are just right, haven’t split one yet.

dolphinpose · 28/10/2020 06:57

Thanks Spangly but I already have a separate recycling system. I just need a single container. But love the shape and legs. That, as a single unit and twice the size would be perfect.

DesperatelySeekingSunshine · 28/10/2020 07:39

Brabantia here too. Ours takes the L sized bags, not sure what that is in Litres.
Had it about five years, was expensive, but has been worth it.
No issues with the lid, the bags are really strong and never break. Never had any bun juice to clean in the bottom of the bin.

DesperatelySeekingSunshine · 28/10/2020 07:40

*bin juice, not bun juice!

nitgel · 28/10/2020 07:43

I just have a plain cylinder bin from argos £20 easy to empty. Pretty ordinary but functions well. Robert dyas do rectangle bins

Spanglybangles · 28/10/2020 07:45

@dolphinpose that’s what I was saying, mine is a split bin but they also make the same bin but with one large 60 litre container inside instead of the 2 smaller containers. Although maybe you are looking for something bigger still?

dolphinpose · 28/10/2020 08:01

@Spanglybangles - that is perfect. I keep trying to find somewhere that actually sells it online. No luck so far. But it is really close to what I want. Thank you.

Spanglybangles · 28/10/2020 08:51

@dolphinpose when I bought mine I saw them on Amazon, wayfair and next that I recall. Have just looked and next have them in different colours right now. Smile

Spanglybangles · 28/10/2020 08:53

John Lewis also have them online.

dolphinpose · 28/10/2020 09:21

I've found them at Wayfair for £140. Thank you.

dolphinpose · 28/10/2020 09:22

Didn't want the touch, wanted the pedal but very similar style and shape. Thanks so much for linking to them.
