Painting kitchen cabinets. Pic included, which colour?

I'm in self isolation over half term, so it's time to get some jobs done around the house.

I'm thinking repainting the kitchen cupboards in my pokey little kitchen, in the grey colour, downpipe. Would that be a really bad idea in a small space?

Any other ideas?

Keep white, get new cupboard /drawer handles

Larsingsong · 24/10/2020 12:13

Thank you.

I've reported the million threads I've made 😒. Will keep this one hopefully

Grin I did think you seemed a bit enthusiastic with all the posts!

Another option is to change the tiles but that's a much bigger job... I think the white looks nice and clean and light with the wooden surfaces

Larsingsong · 24/10/2020 12:26

Yes, they're being deleted now 😊.

My budget extends to a tin of paint and the handles, I would love new tiles though.

I repainted them white when we moved in about 15yrs ago, so they're grubby close up. Tempted just to freshen them up though in a light colour and change handles.

I really like the white. I would freshen up and get new handles. I think grey will be too dark.

Mintjulia · 24/10/2020 12:34

I prefer the white too. Smile

How easy was it to get a smooth paint finish? My Oak shaker doors have faded in the sun so considering painting them.

Larsingsong · 24/10/2020 12:40

@mintjulia thanks, it will probably be easier to keep them white.

It was easy to get a smooth finish with a mini roller, although it's not the same glossy/satin finish you get with a brand new kitchen. I wash them a lot with bicarb and water and they have lasted all this time. The drawers are the most manky though! Definitely ready for a repaint now.

I think grey could look great, as long as you are really really good at painting, so it looks professional. I'm assuming you are, as the white looks good! I'd go for a washable matt finish if possible.

troppibambini · 24/10/2020 12:48

I would say down pipe would be ok but only if you changed the floor I think you might risk it looking like a dark box.
I painted my kitchen units and replaced the handles it was actually relatively easy.
What about a light grey?

Srictlybakeoff · 24/10/2020 12:54

I think a light warm grey would be nicer than white .

Dilligaf81 · 24/10/2020 13:04

I think a blue/grey could really freshen it up and modernise it.
Worse case you pain it white again in a few months but I think it would be quite striking with the work tops and floor.

troppibambini · 24/10/2020 13:06

@Mintjulia mine were oak shaker happy to post a picture if it helps. I used zinser b.i.n primer followed by two coats of farrow and ball applied with a roller I think it looks pretty good.

steppemum · 24/10/2020 13:11

white looks good.

I painted ours cream (wood before) about 5/6 years ago. I regualrly wipe them, and occasionally really scrub them with flash.
Then about every 2 years a just touch up the scratches, Did that again over the summer, they had got quite scratched, and kitchen looks as if it has been deep cleaned!

So if they are looking tired, I would say give them a good scrub down and repaint. If you do the same colour, you shouldn't need to take them off, and in most places won't even need 2 coats.

When I did mine I used an electric sander on them, and then painted with B&Q own brand which said suitable for kitchen cupboards, I used the satin finish

MJMG2015 · 24/10/2020 13:12

I'm looking at graphite for the floor units & white for the wall units. I don't generally like that kind of split, but I love the graphite, but I'm wary of it looking too dark.

Unfortunately my cupboards are beyond painting.

You coukd always do the base units first & see how you feel.

One thing I'd be concerned about in your situation is your white appliances, so I'd probably go with a light sage or something.

Larsingsong · 24/10/2020 13:14

Thanks for all the great advice.

Might go for a light or dark grey. I see what you mean about the floor, too much dark.

The walls were recently painted dulux polished pebble, so to find a complimentary grey to that might be tricky.

@dilligaf81 do you mean a light or dark blue/grey

I'm happy to be quite adventurous as in a couple of years we'll either move or get a new kitchen anyway as it'll be 25yrs old by then!

@troppibambini yes please. Smile

troppibambini · 24/10/2020 17:04

The one in the left is the original kitchen. I've obviously had a new floor as well. In the after pictures I still need to paint the wooden pantry door. It's ammonite by farrow and ball which I found out is a bit old hat according to Mumsnet but I like itGrin

@troppibambini

Bloody hell your kitchen looks great, I have serious envy. Ammonite is a nice colour.

I definitely can't create that beauty with mine.

@elloello. I also replaced the sink and worktop about 10yrs ago. The ceramic sink has lasted well, I really like it. It is durable, but it breaks all my glasses and crockery so easy!

Thank you that's a really kind thing to say, looking at the colours you have already in your kitchen and the lovely warm wood I would go with something like Dulux pebble shore. I painted my hall in it and it is such a lovely colour I think I it would go really well.

troppibambini · 24/10/2020 19:48

This is it and also if you decide to change handles try Screwfit it was by far the cheapest I found (I think mine were about 1.99 each) and really good quality

Sorry I meant Screwfix!

Stringervest · 24/10/2020 19:55

@troppibambini your kitchen looks brand new, I can't believe the difference! I bet you're so thrilled with it!

OP, I would keep the white, it looks light and clean, but polished pebble would be nice too. I definitely wouldn't go darker than that.

troppibambini · 24/10/2020 20:30

Thank you @Stringervest I am pleased with how it's turned out.
Sorry I didn't see that the walls are polished pebble that would be more tricky...I would go white walls and either polished pebble units or pebble shore.
