Anyone not got a splashback/tiled area behind cooker?

I'm struggling to choose a splashback/tile.

Anyone just got paint behind the cooker?

Is it aesthetically pleasing, or does it look unfinished? I like an unfussy look.

Any recommendations for truly wipeable paint?

I have paint behind mine and never had a problem. I’ve had the Dulux Diamond Matt paint but currently got Farrow and Ball - F&B actually better surprisingly. I hate tiles in a kitchen- the date so quickly, the grout gets mucky and they are an absolute nightmare to remove.

InJest · 21/10/2020 19:08

@tronkmanton F&B emulsion or something else?

I have dulux durable matt in my living room, and it doesn't appear terribly durable.

Yep just their ‘modern emulsion’

InJest · 21/10/2020 19:50

@Tronkmanton Fab, thank you!

Me too! We couldn't choose so decided to live with it for a while and found we didn't actually need one and liked the look. We have Little Greene Intelligent Matt Emulsion. Properly washable and more durable than the Farrow and Ball Modern Emulsion we've had previously.

I just extended my worksurface (white quartz) up onto the wall. It looks super clean and unfussy.

Aaahhhbump · 21/10/2020 20:04

I don't the whole wall is turquoise aluminium.

I had the Valspar kitchen paint coloured matched at B&Q. It’s great, and has a fairly Matt finish for a wipeable paint.

Good to Farrow and Ball worked well. That’s what I wanted but was told not to get for kitchen

I'm so pleased there are good experiences with this. Thanks everyone. Was worried I'd have to choose between tomato red and tumeric yellow to avoid the inevitable.

I have paint behind mine because the wall is very uneven ( old cottage - nothing straight and the walls gently undulate) and I have never found any small tiles I like. Plus I don't want to clean grout all the time.
I don't recommend it if you have an alternative. Mine gets a bit grubby - splatter, steam and general cooking-related sticky grime needs cleaning all the time.
I keep a melamine tray propped up as a splashback.

I like a glass backsplash. I think they look great whatever the colour . 16 years ago in my last house I had a white high gloss kitchen fitted . I decide on glass splash backs but couldn't get them anywhere. Now they are easy to come by Grin

mrsmacmc · 21/10/2020 23:49

Be careful if it's a gas hob you need to have a glass or tile splash back for fire 🔥 regs

tortillachipsanddips · 21/10/2020 23:57

We are having our kitchen refitted and I really don't want tiles. I am fed up of grout not being clean and I'm quite a messy cook, so we are planning on having a coloured glass splash back. Maybe in white or light sage green

InJest · 22/10/2020 08:46

I have an induction hob so sounds like I'm ok to do this.

Glass is an option (and I agree it looks great), but its so expensive and I cant decide on the colour.

I'm gettting all the walls plastered/skimmed when I get my exisiting tiles off, so I think I will paint and put in an upstand. If its a mess and I can't keep it clean, I can cover it up with tile/splash later.

Now to spend months dithering about paint choices instead! Grin

For glass go to a local glazing place. We did this and got the exact size required, they drilled all the holes and gave the fixings and it cost about £50.

Purplewithred · 22/10/2020 08:52

We got a made to measure glass splashback off ebay and I remember it being astonishingly cheap. Brilliant and prevented our usual polite marital standoff over decor decisions.

Bwlch · 22/10/2020 09:01

We have paint now but it will be replaced with a glass or metal splashback when the kitchen is refitted

A non-combustible wall will do.

InJest · 22/10/2020 09:36

I will consider glass, if I can pick a colour. I will choose and live with a wall colour for a while first in any case, as the perfect colour keeps eluding me.

@Bwlch Why is paint only not working for you?

We have quartz worktops and upstands, and the same quartz as a splashback behind the hob. I don't miss tiles, though I do find that the walls above the upstands can get a bit splattered.

OP, others have mentioned glass, and I just thought I'd point out that it doesn't need to be coloured. You could get a clear sheet so your paint colour just showed through. Or you could look at perspex (since you've got induction) for lower cost. There are a number of scratch resistant ones out there, and they are priced low enough that you could choose a coloured one and easily change it at a later date if you wanted to redecorate.

JustAPony · 22/10/2020 15:56

A friend of mine has a glass splashback that she unscrews and puts posters and pictures behind.
She changes these quite regularly - quick way of changing the decor!

Mosaic123 · 22/10/2020 17:18

We have a quartz upstand and giant white tiles between the worktops and the top cupboards. 60 x 60 cm matt tiles so hardly any grout. And the grout is epoxy grout which is bullet proof.

nancybotwinbloom · 22/10/2020 17:29

I'm getting tek wall. It's the same as the worktop but thinner. Would you consider that?

If you can wait two weeks I will send you a pic

tortillachipsanddips · 22/10/2020 17:31

Can anyone recommend a cheap place to get coloured glass splashback ?

In southwest?

Im guessing it needs to be templated to have cut outs for plugs?

InJest · 22/10/2020 18:02

@nancybotwinbloom Yes please, do post a photo when you've got it installed. Have not heard of it.

I'm also looking at glass and acryllic, thanks everyone. Also bit worried about measuring wrong and sockets etc... but set on living with just paint for a while to know for sure if I truly need something more.
