can you help with 1910 semi hallway?

hi all,
we have a lovely 1910 3 bed semi, it has a lovely stained glass window in the front door, and black and white encaustic tiles on the floor.
It has picture rails and dado rails but no panelling.
I want something that is in keeping with the age of the house but not too grandiose.
The window glass looks like this and the floor tiles like this.
I thought that this wallpaper might look nice going up the stairs (above the dado rail) as it has the orange and turquoise of the stained glass, but is not too OTT. I'm just not sue what colour to paint the woodwork and under the dado and the banisters. I don't think I'm ready to use any of the primary colours from the front door, but them I'm not completely sold on the idea of using anything too dark. Would white just be boring? We're pretty 'safe' decorators - everything is white at the moment, but I feel like such a dramatic floor needs something.
The furnishings in the rest of the house are oranges and eau de nil green with some teal thrown in.
What do you think?

(I watched George Clarkson do up a 1930's semi last night and he made it into a Hollywood pastiche - I really don't want that!)
I'll post the pics in the next message as can never get it to work from the laptop.

I think the wallpaper is too Scandi for an Edwardian house with those lovely floor tiles. What about this? Depends whether 1. you like it and 2. the scale of the pattern would work. It's quite a statement, but I love it! There are other colourways which could work.

Mollscroll · 16/10/2020 17:12

Agree with fudge. That paper has a slight art nouveau into Art Deco vibe which goes with the era of the house.

JoJoSM2 · 16/10/2020 17:22

We’re in 20’s house with similar style stained glass. We painted the walls a very neutral greige. We’ve got several pieces of artwork and a mirror on the walls. We also went with a stair runner with nice trims and a ceiling light with a bit of design to it.

Here’s some inspo.

RoSEbuds6 · 16/10/2020 17:28

thank you Wowfudge and Mollscroll It is lovely, but yes a 'statement' which isn't really us we're a bit too timid!
I think that's why Skandi appeals, as it's quite muted.
The house doesn't have many period features apart from the glass in the front door and one fireplace in the dining room, so I don't feel I can go full 'Art Deco' on it.

If we took the wallpaper off out of the equation, what colour woodwork would you go for? It's an east facing hallway but dark as not much sun gets through that little door window.

Thanks JoJo that's a really good idea to use a stair runner and rug for some colour.
I love William Morris wallpaper so will go to John Lewis and have a look at some.

That William Morris print was - possibly still is - used by Liberty for fabric, cushions etc. I think it’s too ordinary. Actually I like the one you chose yourself, OP. Slavish adherence is to be avoided but new, more modern prints often work very well.

Saz12 · 19/10/2020 10:06

How about a (slightly scary!) darker colour below the dado, then plain white above? I like the turquoise in the stained glass. It would emphasis the glass of the door, be bright but not too full on.

RoSEbuds6 · 19/10/2020 11:25

Thanks Saz what kind of scary colour? I love the really deep Venetian green you see everywhere now, but I don't think that would work would it? (or would it?)

Also thanks Janegrey333 I like it too. Went to see it in the flesh in John Lewis on Saturday, it looks good, so am going to request a bigger sample to try it at home.

I think if our house was a really grand arts and crafts house I might go 'full William Morris' but as it is just a humble semi, I don't want to go OTT.

I'd change the radiator to something more stylish .... in addition to other PP suggestions.

Seeingadistance · 19/10/2020 16:01

I’m not usually a fan of wallpaper - all my walls are painted white! - but I really like your original choice of wallpaper, OP.

I’d go with that wallpaper and a strong, dark colour below the dado. How about a slighter deeper shade of the orange or turquoise/teal from the wallpaper?

VictoriaBun · 19/10/2020 16:04

Yes I would have suggested a William Morris or perhaps you could find a look alike.
Not keen of your choice of paper - sorry.

RoSEbuds6 · 20/10/2020 18:37

Good idea about the radiator @LizzieMacQueen I hadn't considered that.
@Seeingadistance thanks for the positive feedback for my wallpaper, I saw this on Instagram and was probably swayed by the gorgeous dog, but I thought this might be a good colour for 'beneath the rail".
@VictoriaBun I did read that "arts and Crafts" is going to be a trend for 2021 so maybe there will be new wallpapers that would fit my needs.
I find the really William Morris ones a bit too heavy, especially as we aren't going to do the whole house.
I wouldn't really think of wallpaper but it's such a huge drop from the upstairs landing to the downstairs I thought it would work.
Thanks everyone for your help though - much appreciated

UPDATE:
The wallpaper sample arrived and looks awful. What I thought might give a kind of Klimt decorative effect looked much more bold and childlike.
I have no idea where you go to see wallpaper in situ. John Lewis which is my usual 'go to' only has books of samples, and B&Q has some rather sad looking rolls. I guess I want to see wallpaper in the same way they used to display posters in Athena - hanging vertically sort of like a shower screen. Just to get get more of an idea of what how they'd look hanging up.
Do you have any recommendations of places I can go for wallpaper inspiration?
Thanks in advance!

Try Dunelm. I like the nouveau style wallpaper. They may be a bit busy for you but could look god on the long wall. They have some in store where you can tear a bit off to try. Need to be quick though!!

BasiliskStare · 01/11/2020 23:31

@RoSEbuds6 - whereabouts do you live ? I went to London to look for wallpaper and Designers Guild , the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour & Osborne and Little all did wall paper hanging up like shower screens & you can rifle through them. Did mean a special trip though ( though all 3 quite close together ) & not sure how feasible that would be after Thursday.

Some manufacturers will send you a much bigger sample than the usual ones ( sometimes at a cost )

RoSEbuds6 · 02/11/2020 19:04

@BasiliskStare I’m in SE London so can get there quite easily (COVID lockdown-allowing). Thank you I hadn’t even thought of Chelsea.

Thanks also @roxyrocky they have some nice designs, but (as you predicted) the art nouveau one is a bit too busy for me.

I actually really love this one but it’s completely not what I was looking for!

BasiliskStare · 02/11/2020 19:34

Well if it helps and you can do it in time - Designers Guild , Osborne and Little and Chelsea Harbour are v close together ( 2 on King's Road and one round the corner at Chelsea Harbour ) I did a trip and they were all close together so not that onerous ( but pre Covid )

WhereIsMyMojoGone · 02/11/2020 23:23

I love this arts and crafts inspired one.

RoSEbuds6 · 04/11/2020 18:26

Yes @WhereIsMyMojoGone it’s lovely- simple yet elegant. Not the right coloured for my hall unfortunately.

Is stick with F and B all white , which isn't stark. With sone prints with that lovely blue in. Maybe bright blue elsewhere eg runner in blue and red.

RoSEbuds6 · 18/12/2020 16:49

UPDATE

Hi all,
we have nearly decided on Tivoli blue paint above the dado rail and maybe pale clay below with Sanderson paper going up the stairs above the dado rail.
So my question is, the pale clay is a lovely creamy white, so do we do the paintwork in a gloss version of it? Do we also paint the ceiling with it?
Also, I'd quite like to paint the front door lake red. Do you just paint the front of the door the red, or the back of it too? crikey it's all so complicated!
Thanks for your help!

OP posts:
Crazzzycat · 18/12/2020 16:54

Lots of questions there! The only one I can help with is the front door one. Usually when you paint a front door, you leave the inside white. Although there is obviously no-one stopping you from painting the inside red too if that’s what you fancy!
