Made a bad kitchen choice?

Hellllp!!! I feel like I’ve made a really bad choice of kitchen (and it’s currently being fitted at our new-to-be home ☹️)
Pic attached - I’m thinking ivory shaker is outdated and maybe I should’ve gone grey and also I hate that massive silver extractor fan! Really I should’ve gone for a built-in extractor unit with the posh shelf at the front for hanging Christmas garlands etc. Please give me your opinion, will this be hideous and will I be able to change the extractor fan easily to a built-in one?

It's lovely!
Is that the actual kitchen or a rendering of it?

I've recently had a sage green shaker style fitted so maybe I'm biased 🙂.

cameocat · 22/09/2020 14:36

I think great cupboards would outdated quicker. I wonder if your wall paint colour is the problem? It is very cool whereas the cupboards are warm and therefore there is quite a stark contrast? Also a bare kitchen is quite scary! You do t have blinds up or any splashes of colour which is off putting.

Someone else can advise on extractor fan!

MyDucksArentInARow · 22/09/2020 14:37

You can always paint the cream, shaker style doesn't date as such, more the colours. I've just been through similar. White marble quartz with a choice of sage, cream, brilliant white (with wood plinth) or grey. I cannot stand grey. Cream and white marble clashes, the brilliant white would make it clinical, so I was left with sage! (New build hence limited choice). Once all the snagging is done, I'll run around with some paint.

cameocat · 22/09/2020 14:38

Sorry not great cupboards, grey!

I also didn't sound enthusiastic enough, I think it will be great!

Ouchiehelpneeded · 22/09/2020 14:38

It will be lovely. Choose a nice colour for the walls and put a blind up etc and you will absolutely love it.

Mumblechum0 · 22/09/2020 14:38

This is just the computer rendering yes? I'm sure it's possible to change the extractor so it's sitting in a faux chimney breast with a shelf over, is that what you mean?

isitorisntit · 22/09/2020 14:38

I think we need to see the actual kitchen in the actual room to advise on colours etc. Cream and shaker are classic, though...

IaltagDhubh · 22/09/2020 14:41

I think I’m getting the same kitchen installed in a couple of weeks. Black worktops rather than the white (I’m not keen on the white next to the Ivory, but that‘s just personal preference). We have a very similar extractor fan that we won’t be replacing.

Frankly I couldn’t care less if it’s outdated. I like it. We’re replacing grey units (from Howdens that are only 7 years old but they are terrible quality). II’m absolutely bored stiff of the everything in shades of grey look. I think that is looking dated now. Cream shaker is classic. Maybe.

Put your Christmas garlands around the window. They’d be a fire hazard by the hob!

Thunderbolted · 22/09/2020 14:42

Grey will really date - much more than what you have. Everything grey is the avocado bathroom suites of the future in my view.
A bit of colour on those walls and it will look lovely.

Fast90 · 22/09/2020 14:46

I think it looks fairly dated OP but adding some colour to the walls may help?

zzzebra · 22/09/2020 14:50

I like it.
Grey is more likely to date than cream.
Also it looks like you have just the one medium-small size window in the kitchen so a nice light cream is 100% the right decision.

awsomer · 22/09/2020 14:52

If it’s literally currently being fitted then talk to them about the extractor. It will be a pain and cost money but it’s not impossible.

anotherpersontoday · 22/09/2020 14:52

I like it. Could do with a splash of colour thats all.

p0ptart · 22/09/2020 14:59

I think another PP has it right that the contrast between the warm units and cool wall colour might be the problem (if there's any problem at all!). I'd personally try to conceal the extractor fan, but it's not that bad as it is.

JoJoSM2 · 22/09/2020 15:09

Cream shaker is as classic as you can go.

Overall, the kitchen looks well designed if a little bland. You can always jazz it up with accessories.

inmylifeIlovedthemall · 22/09/2020 15:16

I love the cream shaker and would choose that every time over grey.

That colour goes beautifully with a paint like F& B Ammonite.

I agree with you though, the extractor fan is wrong. I have exactly the same extractor and hate it. It doesn’t go with the shaker style unit and marks like crazy. If you can get it changed I would.

honigbutter · 22/09/2020 15:20

It's not dated, as said above it's classic, and beautiful. The kitchen will be there for years so classic is good.

Once you have all your bits and pieces, blinds and walls painted it'll be gorgeous.

It's a panic about all the money you've spent. Wait till it's finished and you'll love it.

sunglassesonthetable · 22/09/2020 15:25

The extractor is an easy thing to change if it's just a recirculating one.

As a previous poster said I would make sure the wall colour toned better than in this rendering.

It'll look lovely OP!

Thedramalama · 22/09/2020 15:26

Thanks guys 😊 yes it is just a computer rendering which always looks odd anyway. Your comments are so helpful, I will have a look at that ammonite f&b paint thank you. Yes I might just have to live with the extractor for now and save up for a prettier one

Hi OP, I think you need to be much braver with the wall colouring - look at something like Hague Blue, Farrow and Ball, or Stifsky Blue - I have both in my home, one on a wall in a cream kitchen.

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 22/09/2020 15:35

I am mid-fit of my new kitchen. I bought it last December and it's taken this long to complete building works around covid etc. It's grey with bronze-y contrast panels. Probably very outdated already, but I still like it! You chose it because you liked it. Other people's fashion preferences will come and go, but as long as you still like it, does it matter? I love shaker style, but am very lazy, so got flat /plain doors as they're easier to clean. It looks a whole lot better in real life than on the CAD rendition. Even with no worktops and "bits" everywhere! Smile

Cookies2523 · 22/09/2020 15:38

Aww I think it is lovely. As for colour - I personally think you have made the right choice. Everyone & their Auntie have grey in their houses - it just be like living in a battleship!

Thedramalama · 22/09/2020 16:32

Thank you cookies 😂 yes I must admit grey might be a bit miserable or outdated soon and ivory is simple to accessorise

OP posts:
goldpendant · 23/09/2020 17:29

Grey wall makes ivory look very yellow. Choose a sage/green tone paint and it'll look much less dated.

Enjoy!

And yes, see if they'll do the built in extractor, much neater

Thedramalama · 23/09/2020 20:48

Thank you goldpendant, good point! I’ll aim for warm, light tones. I’ve already contacted the kitchen fitter and he’s doing me a quote for an upgraded extractor hood 😁 just need to convince hubby that it should be in the budget 😂 thanks all for your help
