KItchen colours!

We’re planning to replace the very old wooden doors in our kitchen, but keeping the black worktop, dark red range cooker and oak flooring.
We use the room a lot.
It’s north facing and always dark, with a low ceiling.

Cream shaker-style works with everything and is homely. But a bit boring. We could cheer it up with wall colour, but no idea what?
Sage green just looks dingy and nothing in our room.
Pale grey isn’t usually my thing
but could look nice with shiny silver knobs, splashback.
Or forest green, with brass handles/splashback/tap etc. White walls. Could look fab or could look way too dark.

So, any advice?

Remember the saying red and green should never be seen, I wouldn’t put the green with the red range.

Could you not keep the walls neutral but add in artwork and allow your range to be the pop of colour?

I know you said you don't like light grey, but I I saw a dark grey cottage kitchen with dark red accents before and it l looked amazing and very cozy.

Something a bit like the pic

If it’s dingy, maybe have a look at a better lighting scheme? The room sounds like it could be listed, but if it isn’t, you can also add more glazing. N light is never bright but it wouldn’t necessarily feel dingy.

Even if you do go with cream shaker doors, it won’t look boring if you add an interesting rug, maybe some pictures/plates/nice tea towels on show etc.

JoJoSM2 · 22/09/2020 15:14

If there’s an island, you could do that in a funkier colour.

fruitbrewhaha · 22/09/2020 15:18

I think any other than cream or light grey is going to fight with the red range.

Personally I'd keep the wooden doors, or get new wooden ones, and keep the natural wood colour. They warm up a room.

And, this may be left-field but how about pale-ish sherbet-orange walls in a colour that tones with the range.

I think pale colours to 'lighten up' a dark room are a bit of a myth, or at least a bit of a cliche. Why not go dark and rich if the room isn't naturally that light?

Saz12 · 22/09/2020 15:53

No island (have kitchen table and no space for an island).

You’re right about the lighting! It’s on the list of things that we’re going to change, but changing windows not an option due to cost.

The wood units look terrible with the wooden floor.

Cream shaker seems like everyone’s preference... no votes for dark green ?

I think the red range cooker is definitely your limiting factor here. I'm not a fan of grey kitchens in general, but I think it is your best bet if you want a scheme that looks "together". I love that image that NoMoreMrNiceGaius posted. Cream is going to look unbelievably boring IMO.

cheeseismydownfall · 22/09/2020 16:01

You could maybe use a grey-green?

ZaZathecat · 22/09/2020 16:05

Definitely cream, it will look lovely. No need to bend to fashionable colours.

JoJoSM2 · 22/09/2020 16:57

You could maybe use a grey-green?

You’d just need to get someone great with colours to pick the right hue. It’s really tricky.

IntermittentParps · 22/09/2020 17:16

Personally I think green and red looks a bit Christmas-themed, which is great for one day of the year... Grin

But hey, it's your kitchen. Have dark green if you want!

Saz12 · 22/09/2020 17:29

Mmmm...I love the pics of red and green kitchens! But we’re only replacing doors -will get something “off the peg”, not painted for us. So getting the right shade will be tricky....I’m imagining it’ll either be brilliant or dreadful.

The cream is a nice, safe homely option but it’s a bit.... boring.

I think I’m going to get paint sample in the colour of the doors I’m thinking of, and see...

I would go with cream. Definitely not green due to having a red cooker. I think it would look awful.

GuyFawkesDay · 22/09/2020 17:37

I have stone units (so a neutral, not warm like cream or cool like grey) and we have Stiffkey Blue walls. Dark inky blue. Looks lovely with oak worktops.

Units in neutral shades are always good as we've had f&b cooking apple green for the last 4 yes since they went in and it was nice but was finding it a bit bland. I fancied something with more oomph. Walls painted, accessories changed and it looks great for not much £

milienhaus · 22/09/2020 17:39

How about blue?

Aquamarine1029 · 22/09/2020 17:42

Could you post a picture of your cooker/kitchen?

weepingwillow22 · 22/09/2020 19:42

I would go for a light colour unless you have a budget to replace the worktops. Anything else with black worktops will make the room too dark.

Tangledtresses · 22/09/2020 19:58

If you love the dark green... how about cream units with a green wall not near the cooker?

A wall or two at either end or behind the table?

Sometimes dark accent paint can make it look cosy in a dark room?

Tangledtresses · 22/09/2020 20:06

Would these mix?

Cream units and a dark primary coloured range of tiles in darkish red, darkish green, warm mustard randomly mixed up? Brings a bit of life. Add bright accessories. Or is that look too dated (I don’t follow fashion I just like what I like)!

Isolatedizzy · 22/09/2020 21:58

@milienhaus

How about blue?
I love that!
Saz12 · 22/09/2020 22:54

I had dismissed blue as likely to look terrible with the red, but that pic looks great!

Red and blue:

I think you can combine any colours as long as you tie them together with tiles/textiles etc. I just saw some gorgeous green and red tiles above a red stove. Are you going for a more traditional or modern look?

NoMoreMrNiceGaius · 23/09/2020 01:32

Non Christmas-y red and green
