Is rustic oak dated?

ManCubsMama · 20/09/2020 08:17

We are redoing our bedroom and I picked out Oak Furnitureland’s rustic oak range to replace all our broken ikea furniture. I showed a friend and she said that she liked it but that it was really “out of fashion”.

What do you think?

Thinking sage green for the walls. I thought this looked nice.

Is rustic oak dated?

I wouldn’t say that’s ever been particularly stylish. More just sturdy but basic stuff for people who aren’t fussed about interiors.

Itwillbelovelywhenitsdone · 20/09/2020 08:23

Rather than using the phrase ‘out of fashion’ I would say it was ‘timeless’.
It depends what you are after - if you want to look bang up to date (and then deal with replacing in 5 years when it looks ‘so 2020, ugh’) then that is probably not for you. However, if you want something that will still be pleasant and attractive in 5/10/20 years, then it’s a great choice.
As a disclaimer, I have exactly that chest of drawers. Had it for 5+ years. And I really like it!

VettiyaIruken · 20/09/2020 08:25

No idea.
Do you like it?
If so, buy it.
I think it's lovely fwiw

AutumnSummersBuffysCousin · 20/09/2020 08:26

I agree, it’s classic, not fashionable. We looked at that range in Oak furniture land but decided to go with another from there because the drawers were bigger, but I liked that one. If you want modern then that’s not the one for you. I personally think the sage green walls and that furniture sounds lovely.

ALLIS0N · 20/09/2020 08:27

I agree, it’s a classic look.

Bikingbear · 20/09/2020 08:30

I'd say its classic so won't really date. However it's a bedroom and really unless your ill or have a cleaner nobody is going to be in there other than you and DH

giletrouge · 20/09/2020 08:48

I have been staring at precisely that in my own house for about 12 years. Not bored with it yet and it still looks good as far as I'm concerned.

mytimeonline · 20/09/2020 09:02

I love Oak
It is a classic quality piece of furniture
Sage green and Oak 👌

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 09:11

I think it’s just a functional piece of furniture, few people are going to look at it and think wow, what fabulous tastw you have. It’s just functional.

In my experience oak furniture land is quite expensive and not very stylish.

Something like this from mark and spencer is much nicer

I was just about to buy that one from M&S,but ended up going with this range from OFL instead. It worked out far better value (both M&S _and OFL were on sale) and I think it’s classic with a modern feel. www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk/furniture/romsey-natural-solid-oak-triple-wardrobe/1007158.html

Bernardstolemywatch · 20/09/2020 09:17

I think you should ignore your friend and have what you like. As it’s your home. Personally I like oak furniture land products, they’ve been brilliant quality. I like to buy for the long term, can’t be doing with repurchasing furniture because its now out of date 3 years later.

FinTutuola · 20/09/2020 09:20

I think if anything is making that particular piece look dated it is the handles, not necessarily the wood itself. They may be quite easily changed if you wanted because the wood is really nice

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 09:23

Yes, I think it’s the handles too.

Woodendollymix · 20/09/2020 09:30

I have that style (living room/dining room) for the last 14 years, but now as a previous poster has said, the handles are really dated.

Lots of cheap imitations of this design out there now, mine are very heavy robust well made, bought from Barker and Stonehouse when they first had them in stock, then they changed the range and called them another name, but the quality was not the same.

If you like that range buy it

I have looked at the ones in OFL but the draws are really shallow

ManCubsMama · 20/09/2020 09:32

Thanks everyone.

Comparing the OFL to the M&S, I realise that what I like about the OFL is the handles. I like that reclaimed kind of look.

Which kind of answers my original question about how much it bothers me if the range is not considered very fashionable/contemporary.

Also after years of having IKEA furniture which is now all damaged & broken, I am buying furniture to last - which again answers my question

I think if you like it that’s all that matters op.

dudsville · 20/09/2020 09:35

It looks nice, it's classic (not about whether someones fussed or not).

PickAChew · 20/09/2020 09:36

Sod fashion. It's proper wood that should last if it's put together right and you like it and it will go with your room.

rslsys · 20/09/2020 09:41

Buy it because you like it and don't worry about it's fashion status. Over it's lifetime it will become 'fashionable' several times. You are just ahead of the curve on these occasions 🤣

PickAChew · 20/09/2020 09:41

That M&S stuff is veneered and definitely not built to last.

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 09:48

Actually it’s solid oak. And weighs a ton, I’ve seen it in store in real life.
minipie · 20/09/2020 09:49

If you like OFL then also have a look at Made With Oak - similar but will give you a different choice of styles.

SueEllenMishke · 20/09/2020 09:51

I have that exact chest of drawers and bought it specifically because it won't dates and looks great in my Victorian terrace which has lots of period features.

4 years down the line it still looks fab.

Bouledeneige · 20/09/2020 09:54

Personally I think a whole room of rustic oak furniture - this, wardrobe, bed etc would be a bit naff. I'm nut a huge fan of chunky orangey furniture and prefer something more elegant. But I'm also not a fan of whole rooms with white ur grey new furniture either. I prefer old and new. But as a chest of drawers on its own it's inoffensive.

But I also wouldn't care about what other people like me say and what's in fashion.

TeaMeBasil · 20/09/2020 10:05

I have three pieces of furniture in that range & they look great!

Surely if you choose what's 'in fashion' it will inevitably be 'out of fashion' at some point? Great if you're buying cheap disposable furniture but not if you spend money on good solid pieces.

As above, I think it's classic & timeless - safe to stick in your house & not have to change in 4 years time!
