I'm painting our front reception room which has a working fireplace (log burner) and is pretty traditional. It has white shutters on the windows and white shelves wither side of the fireplace. What scheme do you like best?
1 Dark& Cosy With the built in bookshelves &Cosy 2
Or
2 A bit of Colour

We have a light and white kitchen diner in the back of the house which is more modern.

Looking to add warmth and create a 'done' room.

2 is beautiful but is a bit generic and lacks personality. I think 1 is gorgeous, cozy, warm, different and more modern and will match your kitchen more.

Soontobe60 · 08/07/2020 14:46

The first one is lovely. If having only part of the wal painted, just paint alcoves rather than the chimney breast.

Cosy 2

1dark and cosy

pallisers · 08/07/2020 17:42

Our small sitting room is done very like your number 1 - except the blue on the walls is a bit darker. We have a fireplace, white bookshelves and woodwork and white blinds on the windows/window seat. Also wood floors and a colourful rug. It is really warm, cosy and is one of our favourite rooms in the house (also have a white/bright/modern kitchen at the back :))

Splattherat · 08/07/2020 17:45

I like them both how much natural light do you get in the room? If not much light and using it during the day I would go 2 but if using it more at night with the log burner on I would go 1.

LordOftheRingz · 08/07/2020 17:49

I like a bit of colour. The dark and cosy theme is so instagram over done.

Hinckers · 08/07/2020 17:50

Mark my words - the dark navy/ teal walls with the yellow furnishings are going to be the grey of the future!

IncrediblySadToo · 08/07/2020 17:53

I like 1.

It's a little bit hard to compare when the photos are showing different aspects of the room, but choosing from those, definitely 1

100%. I watch so many 'influe-beggers' and every single one of them has that scheme.
LordOftheRingz · 08/07/2020 18:24

The forward trend is florals.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/07/2020 18:25

But both are good

Jeremyironsnothing · 08/07/2020 18:29

I love 1

Cosy 2 doesn't load for me. It says page not found.

peachgreen · 08/07/2020 18:33

We did 1 a few years ago and I'm bored of it already because everyone has it now! It is nice and cosy though but needs clever lighting. We have dark furniture and a wood burner but a white bay window and deep white skirting which brightens it up.

MrsNoah2020 · 08/07/2020 18:36

Agree. 1 will be lovely on a cosy winter's evening, but might be a bit gloomy during the daytime.
milienhaus · 08/07/2020 18:38

We have something approaching 1 but in dark green and I love it so I say 1 (but making my bias clear!).

We do have a lot of light though, would be gloomy without that maybe.

Splattherat · 08/07/2020 18:45

Yes we could only go 2 in our front room as it has very little natural light.

heysugar · 08/07/2020 19:24
  1. It's lovely.
SoTiredNeedHoliday · 10/07/2020 11:28

we have a fair amount of natural light in the room, especially from 12 onwards. Though on a winters day anything here looks gloomy.

Pollisers i'd love an image of your room it sounds fab!

miliehaus also i'd love an image of your room too to see what a green looks like.

Hinkers I take what you are saying as a fair point. Can you post some images which are more forward-looking? What would you do?

The forward trend is florals.
LordOftheRingz I'd love to see some images / posts of what these trends look like a room like in image 1.

I understand the navy theme has been around a bit, what else should I be looking to do?

1 for me. But I love bold dark colours, my house is full of them.
