Are carpets awful?!

Are carpets an absolute no-no style wise? I would love wooden floors through the whole house but it's so much more expensive than carpet. We're getting wooden floors in kitchen, dining room and hall but upstairs and living room remain carpeted. And it makes the whole thing look dated. Floorboards not good enough to just buff up. Does anyone else have carpets or are they totally passé?
Thanks

Sorry that sounds stupid at the end... I mean obviously some people have carpets. I'm just canvassing opinion on how out of date they are.

I have carpets upstairs , pretty much everyone I know does

maddy68 · 12/05/2020 21:21

Wooden flooring upstairs is a nightmare. Soooo noisy. I have wooden downstairs and carpet upstairs.

tangochutney · 12/05/2020 21:21

I don’t think out of date at all? We were looking for houses and most show-homes are carpeted still

WillowSummerSloth · 12/05/2020 21:22

Thanks tangochutney
Do you like them? Are there any more modern colours? Is short pile better than thick pile?

So carpet is acceptable upstairs. What about for a living room?

We have carpet upstairs in most rooms but none in any of the downstairs rooms.

My plan is to do away with it altogether. I think it is a bit old fashioned.

tangochutney · 12/05/2020 21:24

I prefer wooden or good quality laminate downstairs with a rug as it’s way more practical with kids.

I find bedrooms very in-cosy without a carpet. I’m sure I read carpets in houses are a bit of a ‘British’ thing though and America and other places don’t really have them as much in their homes- tbh I can kind of see why, we’ve hired a carpet cleaner before and it’s grim how much dirt comes out Blush

MooseBreath · 12/05/2020 21:25

I much prefer carpets in bedrooms. In the winter, wood flooring is so cold on your bare feet when you first get out of bed. As long as they're regularly vacuumed, they look nice too!

BitOfFun · 12/05/2020 21:25

I love a good carpet in the living-room. My ankles get chilly at night otherwise with the draughty coming up the floorboards! Don't be afraid of pattern either- much more forgiving to little marks etc.

What kind of house do you have? If it's period, you can get a lovely effect with something almost Persian-style.

Get the deepest pile you can afford, and it will feel really luxurious.

WillowSummerSloth · 12/05/2020 21:25

I agree Bertucci
You don't see it anywhere in the magazines / websites and my sister nearly recoiled when I said we were keeping the living room carpeted. But the wooden floors I like are just about 5 times as expensive.

Carpets all round apart from bathrooms, kitchen and dining.

Earache2020 · 12/05/2020 21:28

We had a similar situation where we couldn't replace all the flooring so had to replace carpet with carpet. We went for berber carpet in 100% wool and it looks ok to me.

WillowSummerSloth · 12/05/2020 21:28

Yes it's a period house. We're having kamaro Cambridge parquet all through the downstairs apart from the living room. I'd like to extend it but it adds about £8k (with underfloor heating) House is very cold hence why DH is okay with keeping carpets.

I love carpets, much more cosy. Not a fan of wood etc outside kitchen & bathroom. Equally I've never decorated based on fashion so they may be wildly out of fashion and I'm just happily ignorant of this Grin

WillowSummerSloth · 12/05/2020 21:29

I'll have a look at that berber carpet, thanks.

I’ve got good quality thick pile carpets all through apart from hallway kitchen and bathroom. Thick pile is a pain for flattening though I have to hoover 3 times a week to try and keep the pile looking good

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 21:30

Oh and don’t skimp on underlay it definitely keeps the carpet feeling lovely and deep

BitOfFun · 12/05/2020 21:30

This is what we went for in our Victorian house. It was wooden floorboards and a plain rug previously, but this is much cosier.

Love it GinGenie! Fashion is only what you like and makes you happy. I am just too influenced by magazines and other nonsense.

I have carpets upstairs but none downstairs, I’ve never been anywhere different. Hard flooring up stairs is noisey and cold.

Downstairs I have the original floor boards exposed, had the professionals into do it, great job and likely cheaper than carpeting it. However I also have a huge rug down, because it is cold in winter and hard on your feet and not really comfy to sit on if you wish to.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 21:30

I would also suggest synthetic carpet, we had wool once and it got eaten to death by moths

geojojo · 12/05/2020 21:31

I love the look of wooden floorboards but find carpets so cosy. We have recently moved house to a 'project'. At our last house we had no carpets whereas this one is carpeted (v dated but good quality) throughout. We are getting rid of all but thinking of getting carpets in some of the bedrooms as I had no idea how cosy and warm it felt in comparison. I've seen a few sisal carpets when looking for inspiration- that seems to be quite 'in'.

Tailsoftheunexpected · 12/05/2020 21:32

I’ve had both and much prefer carpet . I have laminate in kitchen and bathroom.
