Are carpets awful?!

Are carpets an absolute no-no style wise? I would love wooden floors through the whole house but it's so much more expensive than carpet. We're getting wooden floors in kitchen, dining room and hall but upstairs and living room remain carpeted. And it makes the whole thing look dated. Floorboards not good enough to just buff up. Does anyone else have carpets or are they totally passé?
Thanks

We found Berber wool carpet stained very easily and was difficult to clean. If you have small children or pets that have accidents I don't recommend it really.

Bluntness100 · 12/05/2020 21:34

Agree on the underlay, our upstairs carpet are wool, and a cream colour. They really brighten it up and it’s also much warmer.

I’m not sure about downstairs though, I think I also consider it dated. Likely also because the only people I know who now have a carpeted living room are elderly. Not sure I know anyone under the age of seventy with a carpeted living room.

MammytoElla · 12/05/2020 21:34

I've never heard anyone say that carpets are a no no style wise. Just some people prefer wood flooring and some people prefer carpets. Such as leather and fabric sofas.
To me I'm a cold bod! The thought of wooden floors in my home make me feel cold. If we lived in a country with a hotter climate I would have wood or tiled floors. But in England I like my carpets, it's just personal preference.

Missingthesea · 12/05/2020 21:35

If it's not a detached house, your neighbours will be soooo glad if you have carpets. Our neighbours have wooden floors, and it does look nice but it's so noisy. We can even hear them going up and down stairs, on the side of the house that's away from the party wall. We have carpets everywhere except the bathroom and he reckons he doesn't hear us at all.

TheGinGenie · 12/05/2020 21:35

Yes definitely decorate to what you love, not what others think. My house isn't anything like the magazines but I love it because it's my style and as I'm the only person who lives here that's what matters Smile

BitOfFun · 12/05/2020 21:36

I think that's probably because hard floors are so practical for young families, Bluntness. Mine have grown up now, and I like my comfort!

I love carpets! Used to have laminate throughly and it's so cold on your feet, even with rugs down. only things with carpets is you need to invest in a carpet cleaner as it's the only way to keep them clean.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 21:38

Aw don’t say that @bluntness100 😩 I’m only early 30s and moved into my current house late last year And went for carpet in my living room, it’s a modern carpet though, deep pile saxony in a mid grey colour. I wonder if it because my last house was a really old draughty cottage with think carpets and I just want to be cosy now

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 21:40

@BitOfFun 2 of my children are still very young, I don’t allow them in the living room with drinks or food and everyone removes their shoes before entering, apart from MIL 🙈

I bloody love carpet! We had all wood floor (except bedrooms) in our last house and I hated it, so cold and constantly needed swept and mopped. We now have dark grey carpets throughout and I’m much happier

felineflutter · 12/05/2020 21:44

Everyone I know has carpets @Bluntness100! We do live in a backwater though.

I would hate wooden floors. My kitchen, bathroom and hallway are tiled the rest carpeted.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/05/2020 21:44

Why not laminate and rugs? Carpets are warmer, but they're definitely less clean. I'm allergic to cats, but can manage in a non-carpeted place that's been thoroughly cleaned. I can't manage in a carpeted place even if it's been hoovered.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/05/2020 21:44

@bitoffun we were never allowed in the living room with food or drink or shoes growing up either and my parents had that awful carpet you find in hotels that would probably survive a nuclear blast 😂 I think that’s why I’m so strict on it plus it wasn’t cheap and don’t want to replace for a while! Thankfully MIL doesn’t come round often 🙈

Buyitinbamboo · 12/05/2020 21:45

I worked for an interior designer and still follow their work now and they always carpet the living room and bedrooms

Bluntness100 · 12/05/2020 21:47

Sorry everyone but I genuinely don’t know anyone whose living room is carpeted apart from some elderly relatives and neighbours,,😳

However everyone does have rugs down.

homemadecommunistrussia · 12/05/2020 21:47

Wooden flooring everywhere is really dated.

ZarkingBell · 12/05/2020 21:48

In your own home you should do what you like, unless you aren't planning to stay there long.

I really hate carpet. I think it's really dirty and dusty. I think of the dust bunnies that gather in a room in a week and I'm disgusted at how much is embedded in a carpet. It's not a fashion thing - some people have very nice looking carpets and rugs! But I do agree that wood with rugs is more 'normal' now.

We have hard flooring everywhere apart from one set of stairs. Wood isn't cold underfoot. Laminate can be, but wood feels nice. It's not as 'cosy' as carpet but it's not cold. Tiles in the bathroom are cold, unless you have underfloor heating. But cold tiles are better than carpet!

In my 'best life' I'd have new modern wooden flooring with wide oak boards and replaced skirting instead of the B&Q engineered floorboards my husband fitted in this house as a stopgap when we moved in fifteen years ago. Even if I had the money I don't think I could bear the upheaval.

On the up side, carpet can be very cheap Grin.

Nanalisa60 · 12/05/2020 21:51

I have carpet in the upstairs bedrooms, the stairs, and upstairs all. Hard floor down stairs with rugs

1300cakes · 12/05/2020 21:51

I personally hate carpets for their dust and dirt collection habit but style wise I think they are fine.

ouch321 · 12/05/2020 21:52

I like no carpets anyWhere. Laminate etc wipes clean and carpet it just can't.

I do not have kids but I read the threads with people saying how their little kids have been having 'accidents' and I just think eek I hope they have hard floors as you'd never get that out of carpet properly and you would have to replace it. Ditto with pets.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 12/05/2020 21:53

Carpet is very out of favour at the moment. I love mine, though with the kids home full time they are horribly stained and I can't wait to get hold of a rug doctor!
None of my friends have carpet and I find it very cold and hard underfoot.

Bluntness100 · 12/05/2020 21:54

To be fair my wooden floors are cold in winter, because there is a cellar under the house.

My friends have things like laminate or engineered wood and it’s much warmer, they do still have rugs though.

Downton57 · 12/05/2020 21:54

Have whichever flooring you prefer. It's your home, and it's nobody else's business. No point thinking about trends either, as they change too quickly for most of us to keep up.
