Looking for inspiration.

Thanks!

By the way, the room has light coloured hardwood floors and faces north but has big windows so is quite light. Apart from that it's a completely blank canvas.

I think a soft grey accent wall (farrow and ball elephants breath maybe?) and creamy other walls, plus some more luxe twenties- style things, with a few bits of gold thrown in (eg a big bronze mirror)

BikeRunSki · 04/05/2020 16:08

Creamy white and grey walls, with bright accents. We have elderly pale blue/grey sofas, with “British Shorthair” (Valspar) and Dulux Timeless above and below the dado rail. Oak floors. These curtains and cushions.

I like the idea of gold/brass. We were also thinking copper might be nice but although it would work for a light fitting I think a copper framed mirror would be a bit gaudy. We'd like to hang a mirror opposite the windows.

If we were to pick one or two accent colours for cushions/curtains etc which one woukd go best? We don't want too many different colours, just a palette of two or three.

Depending on whether you wanted to go dark and maximalist or lighter and a bit more "quirky" I'd go for rooms like these

Sorry I'm not sure if my attachments posted

peperethecat · 04/05/2020 19:11

Definitely lighter and more quirky. My husband isn't keen on dark walls and I think it probably would make the room feel a bit poky, so we're thinking about keeping the walls light and finding other ways to bring some colour into the room. The walls are currently plain white (a quick fix when we moved in because the walls were stained with 50 years' worth of grime) and I don't think we want to go much darker but I also want it to feel cosy and not cold.

You get some really lovely copper mirrors though.

And some wonderful cushions.

peperethecat · 04/05/2020 19:23

Oh I like that mirror.

I think we will need to wait until the sofas actually arrive to see exactly what colour they are because it looks different on each of our screens. The more blue they are the more I would lean towards copper, and the more green they are the more I would lean towards gold, I think.

My sofa is that colour and I have hardwood floors too. I have dulux goosedown walls and copper light shades and a copper frame mirror which is cool and not tacky! 😉

I have another paler grey sofa and lots of bright coloured cushions. I also have a blush pink storage bench.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/05/2020 19:29

A pale dusky pink for one wall, maybe.

Deeper dusky pink for cushions. You could throw some brighter pink ones into the mix too, if you wanted.

It would look fab with one of those huge sunburst mirrors, if the surround wasn't too bright.

CountFosco · 04/05/2020 19:37

Not an accent wall, they are very dated. Is the sofa grey or a dark blue or green, it's hard to tell on my phone. You could go with millennial pink walls and lots of greenery. Full length curtains like in the picture above with the green sofa or something darker and not quite so matchy? Something about like this?

peperethecat · 04/05/2020 19:42

I think it's going to be more blue-green. Its described as petrol blue but I'm not sure that's accurate. They had the same sofa in two different shades of grey though so I'm not expecting it to be grey. Stupidly we didn't order a fabric sample.

God, who cares if something is allegedly, 'dated' or not. My fireplace is Victorian - is that dated too?

OP - have what you like and think looks nice. That is all that matters.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/05/2020 19:47

Made.com have really beautiful velvet curtains at fairly sensible prices, if that's something that might appeal.

Perdigal · 04/05/2020 19:55

I like all of these xx

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie That's where the sofa is from so maybe they will have something that matches. I didn't think to look for curtains.

Oh it will be beautiful! DD has one of their sofas in pink, and it is really lovely.

CountFosco · 04/05/2020 22:05

Our last and our current house had at least one 'feature wall' in every room when we moved in, it may have increased my hatred of them quite a lot! How bloody difficult is it to paint all your walls the same colour? Particularly in a period property with lots of lovely features.

peperethecat · 05/05/2020 08:32

My husband is quite up for the idea of painting one wall darker than the others but I'm not sure. I think we'll wait until the sofas arrive and then decide what colours we think work and take it from there. At the moment the room looks lovely and light even though it's north facing and we made it smaller to create another bedroom so I'd quite like to find a way of keeping the light, airy feel but making it feel warm and cosy at the same time.

peperethecat · 05/05/2020 08:36

It's not a period property with lots of lovely original features so we don't need to worry too much about that, but it does have nice high ceilings and big windows with a lovely view of the tops of the trees outside. It's in an apartment building which was built in 1970 but in a way that was supposed to be in keeping with the much older buildings in the local (protected) area, so it's still quite nice, if that makes sense. We're in France, not the UK, but that doesn't really affect how we can decorate or what we can buy. We had some things such as our shower enclosure delivered from the UK anyway because that was where we found what we wanted.

I would go to John lewis or other fabric place and order several samples of patterned fabric and perhaps wallpaper then see how they go with the sofa. In my view that is a cold grey, quite nice bluish grey, but coldish, and you have a north facing room so light will not be very bright esp in winter.
So find a fabric that goes with the sofa but introduces some nice colour that also tone in eg softer blues, contrasting rust, red whatever you like. then use that piece of fabric to match up with more samples of rug/cushions/wall paint/curtains/blinds.

Doginahat · 05/05/2020 08:48

Would rose gold metals rather than copper lift the room further?

Reginabambina · 05/05/2020 08:52

Cabbage white from farrow and ball

www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/cabbage-white

Any metallic stuff in sliver

Lots of plants. Either germs or succulents.

The occasional tiny bit of red/orange/yellow to contrast (but very small like a tiny figurine or something).

Reginabambina · 05/05/2020 08:53

Or brass actually would be way better
