I am in the process of getting my kitchen refitted, HA property so while I had some choice it was up to them to finalise it .
They have put in a extra base cupboard ( which I wanted )
All of the wall cupboards only have 1 shelf ( previous one's had 2 ) .
So I need as many space saving things as possible, there is no floor space that won't get in the way of cupboard doors so I have no where for bins , pet bowls, veg rack.
No space between cupboards for them niffty pull out shelves.

The only wall space is directly over the radiator, .considering cup hooks there but I can not put a shelf up more than a few inches wide as it will get in the way of the back door opening
So give me your tried and tested best space savers ( I don't need / want cooking gadgets )

Can you just get extra shelves to put in the cupboards?

AlCalavicci · 13/03/2020 01:55

Only if i buy and fit them my self . apparently this is the way people want things now , I can now stack tins of beans 3 and a bit high on the lower shelf and 3 high on the top shelf , while i understand some shelf height space is useful for things like bottles of oil I do not need all of my cupboards to be set up like this .

I have been looking at plastic stands that will fit in my cupboards like this

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ikea-Shelf-Insert-White-Cupboard-Kitchen-Organiser-Stand-Stackable-Space-Saver/254168314770?hash=item3b2d9cb392:m:mAZb5UE29SvqTlMmrysV1Nw&var=553680912130
it will give me more shelf space but not more bin / pet food bowl space

Pet food bowl in the hall?
Bin in cupboard under the sink
Mug tree

AlCalavicci · 13/03/2020 02:26

@blondie1984
unfortunately I dont have a hall , its straight from the street in to the house kinda home .
All the under worktop type cupboards have a fixed shelf in them about two thirds deep , so what I need is a narrow hook on the door kind of set up ( I can not fix things to the cupboards )

@AlCalavicci

Does the kitchen have a door - i.e. could you put a coat hook or two on the back of that and then hang a bag from that to put dog bowls etc in ? which could be a nice pretty bag so all looks ok & can shove dog paraphanalia in there

Also can you hang something from the ceiling like this ( it may be able to above the window www.amazon.co.uk/KitchenCraft-Hanging-Storage-Baskets-Vegetables/dp/B0001IWUWM/ref=asc_df_B0001IWUWM/?hvlocphy=9045941&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=255870287193&hvpone&hvlocint&th=1&hvpos&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-307248609015&hvrand=4753750528407558490

& could you get a kitchen bin on wheels so you could kick it easily out of the way when you want to open a cupboard.

I think those extra shelves to put in cupboards if you can get the right size seem good.

I do appreciate your point as I have v limited storage space so I am sure you have thought of all these ideas but just in case.

Also any good for hanging mugs / cups ? www.amazon.com/Coffee-Holder-8-Hooks-Space-Organizer/dp/B07WJTGYCX?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Sorry if no good - but have tried Blush Flowers

All best to you

Pinterest has a lot of ideas for this stuff. More than you'll get on here

PenguinsOnParade · 13/03/2020 04:43

I got a good bunch of space saving things from Wilko. I've got shelves for plates, an over the door pan lid rack and these shelf things.

www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-hanging-storage-shelf/p/0435938

Joseph Joseph do some good space saving things too but I think a lot of them stick to your doors so might not work for you, but maybe worth a look at the other things if any of them work for you.

Would the command hanging strips be an option to attach things to the door without them causing damage or being permanent?

mohasfluffytoes · 13/03/2020 08:15

These are good - they come in different sizes so you can use them in different combinations.

AlCalavicci · 13/03/2020 11:51

@BasiliskStare, I had not thought of hanging stuff from the ceiling , I will look into that more, I like the idea of a bin that can be kicked out of the way or a narrow one that would hang on the cupboard doors
I like that cup holder so I may go with that .

@PenguinsOnParade ( great name )
I will def get some of them hanging shelf / basket type things they will be perfect for veg.

I have never used command strips before but they look good so I may use them to hand cup hooks etc to the side of the cupboard

@mohasfluffytoes

I have a wire type shelf like them but more would be very useful ,

thanks for the ideas , keep em coming Smile

Can you change your baseboards/kickboards to drawers?

I have 2 Ikea napkin holders (square white ones) nailed to the inside of a cupboard door, it holds all my chopping boards (the thin plastic ones) placemats and the splashguard for the frying pan.

Also, declutter your kitchen stuff ruthlessly! I do this every couple of years and each time I think I have possibly got rid of too much, but I never miss what I've removed!

Potplant · 13/03/2020 12:08

I've also got the shelves from Ikea. I've managed to combine two shelves of glasses into just one. They're also narrower than my cupoboard so I can get some taller glasses in as well.

Are you sure the shelf height is fixed? I've got a tall section for oil bottles and sauces just by moving the shelf up a bit.

AlCalavicci · 13/03/2020 15:37

@littlewoollypervert
Unfortunately I cant get kick board draws Sad
I have been looking at magazine racks for the same kind of use as you napkin holders so I may use them .
My kitchen has been ripped out so I had a major clear out before they started I threw away half a wheely bin full of stuff ! and have got a load of stuff to take to a charity shop
I was amazed at how much crap i had in such a small space Blush

@Potplant
The shelves are now on my amazon wish list , I need to add a bin to the list too.
The shelf's are not fixed but here is only one, there is space / holes for more but it is not part of the refit deal . So I will go with the IKEA ones mentioned up thread .

I am also going to get them for my veggies

Get smaller bins. Ikea sell lots for recycling, so you can have small one for compost, main rubbish, paper etc and they can sit on shelf in cupboard.
Any bigger clean rubbish like rinsed plastic or metal hang in washable bags on hooks on the back of door. Easier to take out to bin also.

I store all veg in the fridge, that saves space elsewhere. No veg rack needed.

Pet bowls. leave elsewhere if for water etc, and food eaten straight away can be lifted and washed and off floor after.

Wolfcub · 13/03/2020 15:51

I have a simple human bin that hangs on a cupboard door

Londonmummy66 · 13/03/2020 16:04

I put a wire grid on a wall that was in the wrong place for a shelf and then used S hooks to hang pans and utensils etc on it - freed up cupboard space for other things.

Redcrayons · 13/03/2020 18:14

How annoying they don’t give you an extra shelf so you can move them around. I suppose they’re an odd custom-build size too so you can’t pick up one in B&Q.

Pinterest is an goldmine if storage hacks.

AlCalavicci · 13/03/2020 20:55

@Redcrayons , it is annoying , apparently if I had asked for extra spare shelves at the start of the proposal ( early last year ) I could of had them . But nobody told me this was a option and its not the kind of thing most people would think about IMO ( i didnt see a model of the cupboards only a picture with its doors shut )
I have not measured the shelves but they are certainly deeper and longer that my last ones, but it is worth looking into , thanks

@Londonmummy66
The only wall space i have is only about 4 foot wide and over a radiator so something to hang pans on wont work but a smaller version may do .
@Wolfcub
I like that bin it is certainly a contender .

Ok so far my wish list is as follows

one of the bins and the wooden shelf are designed to be screwed in place but I am going to try the command strips to see if they will work (if i buy this stuff ) it will also mean i can move them to different doors until I have found the right spot , without leaving marks

Umm other shops are available Grin

AlCalavicci · 13/03/2020 21:00

@Caspianberg,
I have had a look at some of the ikea bins and will probably get one or two small ones once I have figured out how they will all fit in the space I want ( which I have not decided yet )
I keep most of my veg in the fridge too but its things like spuds and onions that I need a bit more space for

OP posts:
Londonmummy66 · 13/03/2020 22:07

You could always get a smaller grid - the fact that the pans hang over a radiator wouldn't matter - there are lots of examples of quite small grid systems on pinterest

Bowerbird5 · 14/03/2020 03:11

I know it is maybe considered old fashioned but Tupperware is in different sizes and stacks on top easily. I have large thin ones 3? For SR and plain flour and then smaller 2s for sugar, dried fruit etc. So they would stack. You can buy them used on ebay.

bushtailadventures · 14/03/2020 03:47

We have baskets on top of the wall cupboards for things we don't use very often, like all the plastic food boxes we will ever need, odd bits of kitchen equipment that only gets used occasionally. We have crisps in one so dgd can't help herself too.

How about a rail above the hob for pans? We have 2 wall cupboards either side of the hob and put a rail up between them with S hooks. Have to confess we used a metal curtain pole rather than a dedicated pan rail but it's been there for a long time now and works perfectly.

Command hooks are great too, we have them on the front of some doors, I hang utensils from them and they can be removed easily enough if I change my mind.

Caspianberg · 14/03/2020 10:03

Can you get some wire baskets to store potatoes/ onions etc on the shelves inside cupboards also?

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/03/2020 10:09

I have these

They are really useful and it means I have an extra shelf in every cupboard

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/03/2020 10:09

Doh! You already had them on your list. I can recommend though.

AlCalavicci · 14/03/2020 12:45

@Londonmummy66 . I will look into a grill type thing but I really dont want to attach things with screws if i can help it as its a rented house .

@bushtailadventures ,
do you not find that stuff on top of the wall cupboards gets greasy ( i have a very low ceiling so that may be causing the problem )
I have cupboards on either side of the hob but I have ( and love ) a eye level grill so I am not sure if that will work
I am glad command hooks work as well as they say in the adverts , I will add them to my list .

@HasaDigaEebowai
Great minds thing alike , my only thoughts with putting onions in the is the onion skin getting all over what ever is below them .
why does onion skin get bastard everywhere !
