I am in the process of getting my kitchen refitted, HA property so while I had some choice it was up to them to finalise it .
They have put in a extra base cupboard ( which I wanted )
All of the wall cupboards only have 1 shelf ( previous one's had 2 ) .
So I need as many space saving things as possible, there is no floor space that won't get in the way of cupboard doors so I have no where for bins , pet bowls, veg rack.
No space between cupboards for them niffty pull out shelves.

The only wall space is directly over the radiator, .considering cup hooks there but I can not put a shelf up more than a few inches wide as it will get in the way of the back door opening
So give me your tried and tested best space savers ( I don't need / want cooking gadgets )

Poundland do fabric storage bags for veggies which would be great for you, put the onions in the bag then put the bag on the shelf. Would stop them rolling around too.

If you get some plastic boxes with lids that fit ontop of the wall cabinets then yes the tops might get a bit greasy over time but same as the top of the actual cupboard. just take them down and wipe over. Ikea is your friend here again. Could be handy for spare groceries, baking bits not used regularly etc.

@PenguinsOnParade
That sounds like a good idea .

@Caspianberg
I always put a layer of tin foil or baking paper on the top pf my wall cupboards and just change it every few months, I have some paper bags left over from when tescos still delivered veggies in them so I could put the Tupperware boxes in them to keep them clean .

Well I have ordered all of the above ( I opted for the brabantia bin ) plus some other bits , its going to cost me about £80 !
It is all coming tomorrow except the kitchen roll holder which I cant get till april Hmm.
Now I need to decide if I need new draw inserts ( for knives , forks etc ) and a new washing up bowl . I have got the old ones but the bowl is about 3 years old and stained and the draw insert is about 10 years old .
Do I get new ones ?

Definitely get a new bowl, it will cheer you up out of all proportion to the cost! Not sure about the drawer insert, how much is it getting on your nerves? Could you get a new one with better arranged compartments?

AlCalavicci · 15/03/2020 09:46

You are right , for a couple of quid it will make a big difference .
The draw insert that I have does the job for cutlery but not spud peelers wooden spoons etc ( kitchen knifes stored in a block ) .
My new draws are much wider so could accommodate a bigger insert.

I think I have just talked myself into getting one Grin

I only have one shelf in my cupboards and I am in the process of ordering an extra shelf for them as there is so much wasted space. The extra shelf from your old ones may fit your new ones.

I am basically just ordering MDF cut to size for mine!

AlCalavicci · 15/03/2020 11:32

@chocolatespiders
You are right there is a lot of wasted space , I could understand having one cupboard with more height space in it but not all of them.
The old ones would of been to short , and they took them away before I saw the set up of my new ones .
At the moment I am not sure if i will get new shelfs made or buy some movable ones like them

once I have got everything back in my cupboards I will have a better idea of what in want .

Amazon gave been Smile .
I can't put anything fixed in place yet as there is still a lot of work to be done but the basket fits well and still plenty of space underneath it

Well I am in the process of putting all the stuff back in my kitchen and I have discovered that all of the cupboards are shallower than my old ones by quite a bit , so much so that my sodding plates will not fit in the wall cupboards and I need the lower ones for pans mixers etc .
so I have been looking to see if I can find a plate stand .
There are loads out there but they are all designed to have the plates facing sideways , I need one with the plates facing forwards .
I can not see any that I could turn round as the would be to wide .

Anyone got any ideas ?

When I moved house my new ktichen only had one shelf in each cupboard too. I went into B&Q and found a piece of plywood / mdf, gave them the cupboard widths and they chopped it up for me. Then I got a pack of the little corner things the shelf rests on and I was done. Think it cost me about £20 altogether?

ADreamOfGood · 31/03/2020 16:24

Argos or Amazon will have a corner plate stacker, white covered metal, that fits in a corner on the countertop.
Why do they make cupboards too shallow for plates? Angry

I have my plates on a sideboard because they won't fit into my cupboards (probably not what you wanted to hear!).
In my last house I had them in the lower cupboards, but that was because I had the luxury of a pantry for all my food.
Not any more.

AlCalavicci · 01/04/2020 23:06

@ADreamOfGood,
I have seen them corner plate stacking shelves but I have a tiny kitchen so I want to keep as much as possible off the work tops,
It looks like I will either have to put up with the doors been slightly ajar or buy some smaller plates and get rid ( charity/ give away ) the one I have which seems like a waste of money Sad

Oh, that's annoying isn't it. Do you have a neighbour or relative that would swap crockery, perhaps? Bonus is that two people get new plates! (I get bored with mine, but can't justify replacing unless they break, it's just too wasteful).
Or would just the dinner plates fit into a drawer, and the side plates/bowls in the top cupboard?
