Is there such thing as truly warm grey?

My living room is south facing however I think the window is too small and out room can seem dark on a grey day.

My living room was a pale brown, thanks to an incorrect colour match when Ioved in two years ago which I could work with.

I got samples and painted my living room in B&Qs own 'GoodHome' paint in 'Hamptons'. It was a very icy blue, gorgeous as a nautical blue grey but not for my cosy living room 😔 pic attached.

I repainted in Goosedown by Dulux, though still a cool grey, the samples were promising and look warmer. This corner yet again has icy blue undertones to it 😕

I can't live with it unless by some miracle the blue shades tone down overnight. My husband is going to (metaphorically) kill me.

I've ruled out via testers:

Dulux Polished Pebble
Dulux Pebble Shore
Dulux White Just Walnut
Dulux White Mist

Valspar Shetland Sweater

Wilko Whisper Grey

And several others. Must be a Dulux or Goodhome paint ideally. Crown possibly. Prefer off the shelf for quality control though. I won't use F&B as can't roller it on.
I wasn't a fan of Valspars true greys (black and white mix).

Dulux Perfectly Taupe seems a touch too beige. I really want a grey that looks grey but with subtle beige undertones.

Has anyone else struggled so much with dingy South facing rooms? The cool toens are supposed to balance out the warm sunshine tones we supposedly get!

Ah we have a similar house OP, everything comes out blue even though it’s s facing.

Cornforth white looks lilacy in our house. Not icy cold but definitely bluey purpley grey not taupe grey like everyone says.

We went for Little Greene French Grey in the end which is also supposed to be taupe and also looked blue in our sitting room Grin but in a nice way not icy.

All the warm greys are really brown or purple. The reality in a north facing or badly lit room is that even beige looks grey. You'd get better light in such a room with a blue grey. It won't be warm but it would be more luminous.

Yes. Taupe.

If you really are looking on the greige side, try little green rolling fog. We have the pale variety in our south facing kitchen and "garden room" (according to the estate agents) and it never looks depressing, even on a rainy day.

Cornforth grey is warm in our north facing lounge, definitely has lilac tones at certain times of the day but I love it. We have ammonite elsewhere and that is also lovely and warm, just a softer colour.

We had Valspar colour match as our decorator advised against f&b paint.

I love Cornforth white. Was just coming on to say that lots of F&B whites could work for you as many have grey undertones.

If you get really desperate I also found crown chalky white. White in daylight in a South facing room with a hint of grey. Duller days and evenings it looks more grey.

I tried dulux chic shadow, also blue but in my bathroom no natural light, no window it is proper grey.

I tried f&b blackened which is very, very blue. Strong white also blue. Wevet is a nice white, no blue but can't see any grey at all. It's more a very light ivory in my south facing room.

The cloud burst was a warm brown grey in mine, no lilac or blue.

F and B Skimming Stone? We have the real thing and a Johnsons copy, both lovely. (Don't try the Dulux colour match though, that was terrible).

It was a very close choice between Cornforth White and Egyptian Cotton mixed by Valspar but went with Cornforth White. It looks so much better, can't wiat to see it by daylight. My DHs brother did this for us aswell, he's a professional decorator so the finish and edges are great (apart from the smudge I did when testing that I need to clean of the skirting board!).

Thanks for the help, my marriage is saved!

Ooh looking great.

TurduckenFucken · 16/01/2020 21:28

We have a very ‘prone to blue’ house and choosing colours is really stressful! You took me back to the debacle of painting our hall.
Glad you got there in the end.

F&B Peignoir or Laura Ashley Sable?

Veterinari · 16/01/2020 21:39

@RapidRainbow
Dulux chic shadow is lovely - I think it has a warm almost pinkish undertone

RapidRainbow · 16/01/2020 21:43

@TurduckenFucken

It's crazy isn't it, I've never had such an issue before and wouldn't have believed it possible, would have just put it down to fussiness!

There are lilac hues but I don't mind lilac as opposed to the frosty blue in other colours.

One tip, if you have a good phone camera and upload images from within your house, try looking through the camera at the colours. The bottom colour of the three stripes next to clock was Dulux Perfectly Taupe, looked fine and was nearly my favourite until seeing it look purple through camera!
