What's going on with home design/decoration lately?

Apparently everyone has a sudden grudge against their rectangular/square mirrors. Perfectly round mirrors only, thank you. Are all the non round ones hiding in the attic until they're fit to be seen again?

Ottomans instead of coffee tables, with trays sitting on them pretending to be a stable surface for coffee cups and snacks.

Grey everything from the walls up, and those ashy cool toned floorboards that complement the grey much better than warm toned boards, but indicating we're all going to be living in grey hell for ages yet.

And as much external glass as the homeowners can afford. If the back of your house is not a fishbowl then who even are you?! And if you can't afford to have at least one open to the public wall, just remove the separating wall/doors between your house and conservatory for a refreshing drop in temperature in winter and an assist in boiling you all to death in summer.

I'm starting to covet magnolia, and those houses that are half underground and dark all day...

Oh dear. I have not liked the grey at all, dislike open plan and am not keen on big windows. I manage to bring the outdoors in without trying as it is so have no need for bifold doors.
I have got a perfectly round large mirror though.

I once stayed in a house that was magnolia everywhere, apart from the peach bathroom.

hiphiphoorayback · 02/01/2020 16:06

We have taken out the floor to ceiling windows and put the walls back in creating a lovely set of French doors. I am in heaven. I hated the floor to ceiling windows.

Pipandmum · 02/01/2020 16:08

Maximalism with pattern on pattern and more pattern on top seems the trend the mags are pushing and it gives me a headache just looking at it. Bifold doors are looking really dated now.
Quite like the scandi grey thing still though. And love Crittal style doors!

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 03/01/2020 01:50

These are so true (imo)!

I liked crittal glass for about 5mins but I sense it's going to be the new bifold doors.

My neighbours have a set of bi-folds on their small extension and they amplify every sound from indoors. Of course they have to be left wide open all day long in summer (flies? heat?! We're south facing in the SE)
Theirs do look quite nice but they're not exactly practical and their garden is not that amazing to look at Grin
Give me a set of patio doors any day!

I've just bought a large round mirror in the sales as my giant rectangular overmantel mirror suddenly felt very dated. I haven't swapped them over yet, maybe I should stick with rectangular and not be a sheep!

I wonder what's going to replace grey? I thought the paint manufacturers were trying to make taupes and terracottas happen (takes me back to the 90s).

I follow a few different decor groups and everyone seems to be doing their open plan kitchen extensions in ashy grey parquet effect luxury vinyl with navy units (F&B colour matched) and a pale grey kitchen island (or all navy).
It's ubiquitous yet every one of them thinks they're being daringly original!

antlady · 03/01/2020 02:03

the trouble is social media makes all the trends ubiquitous & so everyone ends up with the same coloured & looking house. Have always hated bi fold (prefer sliding). Love Crittal as they were in my parents house but couldn't have them as they are too on trend.

Notthebloodygym · 03/01/2020 09:48

God how depressing grey walls are. I've seen it done well in 3 or 4 rooms, in the right tones, and hideous in hundreds of places. I've just left a thread where it was recommended for a living room with insufficient light. Ugh!

Perhaps it's the political climate.

I have seen tan shades and pale greens (eg Dulux tranquil dawn) recommended as 2020 colours, just prior to the rush towards classic blue.

goldenorbspider · 03/01/2020 10:01

Mirrored furniture and crushed velvet sofas to match grey walls

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 03/01/2020 12:05

I'm in love with blue, green and teal mid shades (nothing too dark and imposing) and bright white rooms with a few multicolour accessories or plant/warm metal Grin

I must be influenced - it's unavoidable - but I try to stay away from the super popular trends and keep things easily adaptable. For example I'd rather buy a different duvet set, light fitting and/or poster art to freshen up a room rather than make it over entirely.

Saying that I love wrap around colour and can't get into feature walls or wallpaper (I've tried!)

I'm a total novice too so trying to learn what works together.

goldenorbspider not a fan at all Grin

I meant to say I love French doors in my last post.

Joloh · 03/01/2020 12:08

Grey? Everything is copper, teal and millenial pink now. Grey is super over.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 03/01/2020 12:09

Looking forward to an influx of interesting blues in due course Notthebloodygym
There's a limited selection in the more budget ranges e.g. baby blue and bold bathroom blue. Not bothered about dark blue (F&B Hague blue etc) but I'd like to see more interesting light and mid blues aside from duck egg (green tinged obv).

I've just used Dulux Denim Drift after wading through a sea of greys and not wanting to fork out for Little Greene or F&B.

Mintjulia · 03/01/2020 12:12

I’ve refused to have grey. It’s like austerity decor - I find it depressing.

I’m decorating my ds’s room. He’s requested plain white walls and wood grain. Very simple but once all his books and photos are in, it’s quite cheerful. Smile

FabLaura · 03/01/2020 12:19

I hate the open plan trend. Sitting in someone's kitchen, with hard cold floors, perched on a bloody stool, surrounded by washing up. No thank you. Just don't get it.

bingbangbing · 03/01/2020 12:20

So glad that grey is over! Bloody horrible

Whoops75 · 03/01/2020 12:22

Velvet is huge, especially the quilted style with button detail. Saw kitchen stools in that styling yesterday and chuckled. The people who buy these must never eat or drink!!

Dark grey and jewel colors are everywhere
Jungle print wall paper and cushions
No natural wood allowed

All lovely in a bar/ restaurant but definitely don’t work in every house.

MamaWeasel · 03/01/2020 12:28

I quite like grey, if done right Blush but i can't be doing with crushed velour in any colour!

cakeandchampagne · 03/01/2020 12:28

Round mirrors replacing all rectangular/square mirrors?
Thank you.
This is so silly it will make me smile all day. Smile

StormBaby · 03/01/2020 12:33

I've always just done my own thing, but I was chuckling inside when the herringbone floors became a thing because I uncovered my original ones 9 years ago. First time I've been ahead of a trend in years!

MiniTheMinx · 03/01/2020 12:35

I don't understand why people think pale grey looks great in every room irrespective of natural light. I've found that warm colours work better in south facing rooms and cooler colours in north facing rooms.
So, my sitting room and hall and main bedrooms are yellow, cream, gold, with dark red and other rich coloured fabrics whilst the rooms at the back are greys, cool greens like French grey F & B and off white.

As for mirrors, I have had mine for years and wont be following fashion. I'm not exchanging Georgian originals for modern. It's not financially sensible to follow trends.

Floors, I have gone grey with slate. But all carpets are a very very pale yellowy sand colour.

I'm in the south east, and whilst its thought to be more Clement here, its bloody cold! I like being warm and when I'm indoors I'm indoors, if I want the great outdoors I'll go out and find it....I haven't even one plant indoors.

MikeUniformMike · 03/01/2020 12:36

I've noticed ceilings painted the same colour as the walls. Fine if the walls are white, but I'd be very wary with colours.
Dark ceilings take a few coats to get back to white.

Notso · 03/01/2020 12:38

I haven't seen much grey around since I unfollowed Mrs Hinch. It's all dark navy, blue and teal or pink and big rectangular or arched window mirrors are also everywhere.

We do have a big glass extension with bifolds that opens onto the kitchen. I wanted sliding doors but DH won. It's great though, we're not really overlooked, we have underfloor heating so it's cosy. I could sit in it looking at the garden all day long.

It's ubiquitous I guess but the house is a typical 90's estate house very much of its time. Bought totally for location and garden, not looks- it's so ugly on the outside! The style I like wouldn't look right on our house at all and the style all our neighbours have, brown fake wood semi circle conservatory is just as bad to look at.

wonkylegs · 03/01/2020 16:48

I always push clients to look at what they really like and what works for their life rather than what's on trend and this year have had a nice mix of styles but I think it's easier for most people to go with what's on trend because the products are readily available and the can buy a 'look' without professional input,
I do have a client who loves grey at the moment but we've expanded her horizons with white, black and interesting materials and lighting so their house is going to be truly stunning when it's finished.

FenellaVelour · 04/01/2020 14:42

I don’t follow trends. My lounge is dark brown and cream on the walls, although I do have teal curtains, rug and sofa, but that’s because I like the colour - had no idea it was becoming a thing! My lounge is large with wooden flooring (Karndean style but pretty sure it’s not actual Karndean 😬) and when we moved in the walls were magnolia, it felt big and bare, I wanted to “bring the room in” a bit to make it cosy and the dark brown (on three walls) has worked in that respect.

francienolan · 04/01/2020 19:56

I hate grey walls! I love a bold colour. We've been living in a magnolia rental so it'll be nice to put some personality into the house we're buying.

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2020 20:06

I much prefer pure white to magnolia, but agree it is nice to be able to choose the colour of walls. I really could not live with grey.

I love French doors.

greenfieldsaroundhere · 04/01/2020 20:24

I like to think I am not influenced but I do have Mercury glass which I love and teal which I have always loved
