Where do you put the telly in the kitchen-diner?

We are just coming to the end of the world’s most by-the-numbers kitchen extension: bifold doors, island, everything you’ve seen on a zillion estate agents’ pictures.

On the RHS is a galley kitchen. In the middle is an island used for prep. On the LHS is a dining table, books shelves etc. The question is: where do we put the TV?

Because yes, we do want a TV. DH and I spend a lot of time cooking and baking and we like to watch something interesting/entertaining while we do it. This is not (contrary to some Mumnetters’ views) a moral failing.
But the kitchen will also be a convenient place for people who want to watch something on TV while the living room has been bagsied, so we’ll want to have a TV visible both from the cooking area and the sitting area.

Would it be completely mad to have two TVs? Does anyone have a similar layout that works well?

I gather the living room isn’t open plan with the kitchen diner?

Sounds like it being wall mounted would be the easiest way to see it cooking and while seated. My brother has this but it’s got a cover so it can look like part of the cabinets when not in use.

Shahlalala · 13/11/2019 21:09

So LHS built in with a cover within the bookcase?

TheyMostlyComeOutAtNightMostly · 13/11/2019 21:28

The problem is with putting it on the LHS is that we’d have our back to it while cooking - but I suppose when we’re at the island it would be visible. Yes I guess the middle of the LH wall is probably best. Not too fussed about covering it up - it’s a TV not bondage equipment Smile. Thanks

Where do you put the telly in the kitchen diner?

You don't.

Babdoc · 13/11/2019 23:04

Im afraid I’m with MrsJosh on this one! I have a tv in the sitting room and a spare one in what used to be the DC’s sitting room. I feel that’s plenty, and they don’t belong in either dining rooms or bedrooms.
When the family are cooking or eating, I expect them to talk to each other, not stare at a screen - it’s bad enough with phones!

MrsJoshNavidi · 13/11/2019 23:23

My thoughts exactly Bab.
We have 1 TV in this house.

stucknoue · 13/11/2019 23:37

Why not use an iPad on a stand? Completely flexible position wise and multi purpose

stucknoue · 13/11/2019 23:38

I do recommend an echo dot, excellent for asking for timers plus plays music

Bluesheep8 · 14/11/2019 06:11

Sorry but my answer is don't have one. We only have 1 tv in the lounge too. Aware my opinion is unpopular, but there it is.

Hurdygurdy24 · 14/11/2019 06:26

Something like this. Or one that pops out of the island but will sound 360 depending on where you need it.

Google future automation or nexus21

Ragwort · 14/11/2019 06:29

I know it’s not what you are asking but I can never understand how people can watch tv and cook at the same time Confused, we have one tv in the living room and would always ‘sit down’ to watch something specific, I can’t concentrate on the programme if I am doing anything else, even mindless ironing.

Hurdygurdy24 · 14/11/2019 06:30

Or these. These do have a compromise on picture performance though in order to be invisible when off

Allegorical · 14/11/2019 06:34

We have one you can see from standing at our island and from the kitchen diner sofa. You cant see from the dining table which is a good thing. It’s on the wall on a bracket. It was a right kerfuffle getting it there.

Allegorical · 14/11/2019 06:36

I would add that I have little kids and the playroom is there too. They rarely go in the lounge so it’s where they play And watch the kids tv from most of the time. I don’t tend to sit down to watch something there.

CatUnderTheStairs · 14/11/2019 06:45

I was thinking iPad as well or a bigger tablet.

Friend has one on a sort of multidirectional stand so you can twist it all ways, it’s quite a large tv too.

CatUnderTheStairs · 14/11/2019 06:46

Classic mumsnet answers of don’t have one. Love it!

Roselilly36 · 14/11/2019 06:54

We have an L shaped lounge/diner, we have never had a tv in there and we don’t allow screens at the table, our DS are 18 & 16, we sit and talk while we eat dinner. Straight back to their phones bedrooms once we have finished though! Typical teens.

If you want a tv in there, wait until it finished and sit at the table and decide the best position, if you decide before you are properly “in” it will be sited in the wrong position I expect.

Good luck and enjoy yr new space.

TheyMostlyComeOutAtNightMostly · 14/11/2019 07:05

I did attempt to head that one off in advance Cat but clearly some MNers just gotta do the MN thing. The concepts that people might want to keep up with the football while cooking if it’s on at time of day, that some people are psychologically capable of watching Newsnight while chopping veg/ unloading the dishwasher or that a household of four people might find it useful to have more than one TV seem to be outside some people’s grasp. Never change MN Grin

I think I’ll put it on the back wall with a 360 rotating bracket because that splash back thing is tempting but batshit.

I personally wouldn't bother but as you have explicitly said in your OP that you want one, and this is not an invitation for people to tell you whether they would or not, I think I'd probably go for an iPad on a stand, it can be totally portable then.

TheyMostlyComeOutAtNightMostly · 14/11/2019 07:22

I guess a tablet would take the “visibility at different locations” problem away. I could put a little shelf up beside the hob to keep it off the work surfaces. Luddite DH (who does most of the food prep) wouldn’t like it though. He likes his TV on live through an ariel without faffing around with apps.

I hate TVs in the kitchen, not because I am precious about them but if you genuine cook a lot you know that when it’s spring clean time the tops of your units and hard to reach places have a fine film of grease on them. The easier everything is to clean the better.

An iPad propped up is the way to go, the rest of the time go
Into another room.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/11/2019 07:32

we have our TV on the windowsill in the sofa part of our kitchen diner. We don't have bifolds! I can see the TV when I cook as the hob and prep area face into the main room.

We can see it from the sofa and armchairs but not easily from the table. We choose not to watch TV whilst we eat but it's none of my business if other people choose to do so in their homes.

Our TV is small and ancient. The remote is broken so it tends to stay on BBC 1 as it's a pain to change channels. We have another TV in our living room for watching TV properly!

Irisloulou · 14/11/2019 20:16

I came on to say you don’t 😂 but only beacause you will never use your living room.

MY friend has one on an arm that pulls out for cooking programs.

minipie · 15/11/2019 09:23

Are you going to have a sofa/sitting area in the kitchen diner ? Not clear from your OP unless I missed it.

If not and the tv is purely for when you are cooking then I’d go for the ipad solution and get your Luddite DH on board (if my luddite DH can manage it yours can!) There isn’t really going to be anywhere you can put it where it will be visible from the whole cooking area.

minipie · 15/11/2019 09:26

Ah sorry just saw sitting area. Must read more carefully! In that case opposite the sofa and on a massive arm bracket so you can swing it to face kitchen area.
