Your thoughts on artificial flowers

For as long as I can remember I've thought that artificial flowers are a bit "tacky".

I think this is because when I was younger the only ones available looked dreadful.

There seem to be very realistic looking ones available now which look lovely.

Would you have them in your home?

No.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 11/11/2019 22:53

I do here and there because I can't keep plants and flowers alive except for a tatty looking Aloe plant that's clinging on for dear life.

theconstantinoplegardener · 11/11/2019 23:04

I do occasionally see nice ones, but they all seem to harbour a lot of dust after a few weeks.

merryhouse · 11/11/2019 23:07

Every now and again I see them in catalogues, and I agree that they look beautiful nowadays.

Then I think "oh, but the dusting!" and put out something solid instead Smile

greenlynx · 11/11/2019 23:49

I think the key is not to overdo them: every room would be too much, 1-2 in the house - fine. I wouldn’t mind to have them. I had some in a vase recently but they were damaged so might buy a new one. They look very realistic and stylish nowadays. Also I have hayfever so can’t tolerate most flowers in my house anyway.

Whoops75 · 11/11/2019 23:53

I’ve been thinking about this too.

I think if you rotate depending on the season it can be nice.

The high end ones are expensive, might get some in the sales to try them out.

findingmyfeet12 · 12/11/2019 09:10

I still feel a bit unsure but I think I'm just being a bit snobby about it.

Good point about the extra dusting though!

I find they collect dust. Always judge restaurants who have fake flowers as table decorations. especially when they're set in Perspex. If they aren't kept clean what else isn't?

Hithere2 · 12/11/2019 09:59

Ikea fake plants for the win !

PurpleFrames · 12/11/2019 10:01

I hate them 🙈 they always look fake to me sorry.

Louise91417 · 12/11/2019 10:03

No..hidious looking dust gatherers..

7Days · 12/11/2019 10:07

My neighbours have a big old fashioned garden and often give me things like big hydrangea heads or puffs of pampas grass. They do dry very quickly in a dry vase, and look good I think. This time of year twigs with berries look nice too. Easier to get rid of as well when you are finished with them.
So for those reasons I'm OUT when it comes to fakes.

StandardPoodles · 12/11/2019 10:17

I have a couple of Abigail Ahern arrangements and I love them!

I'm a house plant addict so have tons of real ones but real flowers were too smelly, too expensive for a nice bouquet and also never lasted long enough. I'm very happy with the fakes! I just give them a quick dust off whenever I dust my real plants.

SnugglySnerd · 12/11/2019 10:19

No way. More plastic to eventually end up in land fill/the oceans. Just get some easy to maintain plants.

StrictlyNameChangin · 12/11/2019 10:29

@PrincessHoneysuckle those are gorgeous, I admit!

My neighbour volunteers in a charity shop and has some fake orchids she brought home from work one day. They 'get' me every time I visit, they're so realistic. But it's still a no from me - I hate dusting and am rubbish at it, I'm mindful that it's unnecessary plastic that wouldn't get recycled, and as soon as I learn a plant is fake it loses it's attraction for me - there is a joy in flowers and plants that is inherently related to them being alive, to me.

StrictlyNameChangin · 12/11/2019 10:31

And a quick little rant about aldi who we selling 'succulents' in gorgeous little glass pots last week. Very realistic but just why? Even I can keep that type of thing alive!

MyDaisyField · 12/11/2019 10:33

Sainsbury’s is full of fake succulents too. Weird. They look lovely but require so little maintenance that it’s probably easier to keep real succulents than to have fake ones that you have to keep clean.

MyDaisyField · 12/11/2019 11:33

I currently have these on the wall. I don’t think they look even vaguely realistic but they make me smile.

Definitely not. I think they look tacky.

PurrBox · 12/11/2019 11:40

I have some lovely wooden flowers, and also some felt ones. I don't like the ones that try to look realistic, though.

RavenLG · 12/11/2019 12:05

Dust traps. They look crap after a while and the world could do with less plastic in it.

Honey, can I ask why you keep them water if they're fake?

RavenLG · 12/11/2019 12:06

@MyDaisyField I must admit your animal heads are brilliant Grin

AmIThough · 12/11/2019 12:08

I had some in my bathroom and they look cute (I think) in a pretty jar.

Mooserp · 12/11/2019 12:10

I like the realistic looking ones. Not the ones that are weird colours or have glittery stuff on them
