And more homely it's abit silver and white at the moment which I love but not very homely for the winter months. I need to finish my glitter wall and finish painting the doors

I would put some warmer colours in three in the form of rugs, cushions, lamp bases, candles, throws etc. I love grey but always like a accent colours with it.

theoriginaltms · 03/11/2019 13:21

What colour would you suggest please

Red...go nicely with the silver for Christmas! But I l9ve Christmas so maybe not the best person to advise. I did have red cushions and rug with my black sofa and that worked well

Oblomov19 · 03/11/2019 13:29

Any colour you like: green, purple, turquoise, blue, orange. It needs to be something you yourself like.

Stravapalava · 03/11/2019 13:29

Pale or hot pink, depending on your taste. A mint green or hot turquoise would also go, again, depending on your taste. My DM has a grey and orange bathroom and it looks fab, so maybe something to consider?

Stravapalava · 03/11/2019 13:30

I note there's orange in your door panel - I'd pick that up.

LIZS · 03/11/2019 13:30

Texture, such as cushions, throw or rug, in an accent colour ie. Red, purple, teal

Atalune · 03/11/2019 13:31

Soft pinks and minty greens would look really pretty and soften/warm the room up.

Blankets, candles, warm white fairy lights too.

Bluntness100 · 03/11/2019 13:31

I think things like reds and pinks will be a bit tacky, personally I'd add some big green plants, and some warm cushions and throws, also change your lamp shades to something warmer.

theoriginaltms · 03/11/2019 13:46

I'm thinking maybe a deep purple?

Mumdiva99 · 03/11/2019 13:47

I'd also go with the beautiful orange of the door panel.

theoriginaltms · 03/11/2019 13:53

Yes it's orange, I think it's a really brave colour I don't no if I could pull it off 🙈 maybe I will have a look on Pinterest

Deep purple I don’t think would work. Too garish.

meow1989 · 03/11/2019 14:15

Some plants, candles, a few splashes of colour and a nice cosy blanket draped over the arm of a sofa. Have you got lamps? I find it really cosy in the evening to have one or two lamps on instead of the big light.

Maybe a nice decorative bowl for the coffee table?

Mumdiva99 · 03/11/2019 14:19

I've used orange as an accent.....think Moroccan orange. Partly because I was gifted curtains by a family member in burnt orange, the kids have lampshades, I have bath mats and towels, and other bits and bobs and I love it.....despite never having said I would have chosen it.

manteray · 03/11/2019 15:19

The main problem in my view is:-

  1. The sofa. Its a cold grey. Either get rid or cover in warmer or brighter colours.
  1. The accent wall - the dark cold grey. Either paint it cream or a warmer brighter colour.

Job done.

And needn't cost much.

I think will transform your room easily!

manteray · 03/11/2019 15:21

Oops you say you love the silver grey my mistake in the darker light of photos. Sorry I just rushed at the keyboard!

The problem is it is quite a cold colour. So you could still keep it in some places - like an accent here and there - but I just think there is too much of it which is giving the "cold" look.

manteray · 03/11/2019 15:22

Or keep the silver sofas which are quite sparkly.

But get shot of the grey rug and paint the silver/grey wall.

Hugsgalore · 03/11/2019 15:27

Oh I really don't mean to sound harsh but jaysus you've really bought into the silver/ grey trend.

I think you need to do away with that glitter wall for a start. Too dark and also... tbh... tacky.
The sofa is also too cold looking. Throw a few brighter colours on there in the form of cushions or throws.
I wouldn't go with mint green or hot pink as suggested above either it will only increase the tackyness. You need softer colours. Lilac, blush pink, light shade of a sage green...

Do not add any more bright colours in there.
Also the white furniture isn't helping. Natural wood is much more warming and inviting than harsh white and chrome/ mirrored furniture.

milliefiori · 03/11/2019 15:35

Because everything you have so far is in neautral, I don;t think you need a single accent colour. I'd go for two or three. You definitely could handle a couple of cushions or a throw in the orange of the door glass, Or some more orange glass - a vase or lamp base. Then add some teal, ochre yellows or purple. See images below for how those colours can work together.

Add textures. A knitted woollen rug or throw.

I also think you could personalise it way more to make it look more homely. Framed paintings by DC or photos of DC on the walls. A lamp or vase bought somewhere you've travelled to, or picked up from a charity shop - something that shows your personality more, as everything in the photos is nice but very neutral.

My living room is mainly grey and white but has a lot of navy blue accents and that works well.

I have some throws that are navy blue and cream, navy blue cushions and some decorative bits (hurricane lanterns, etc) that have a blue tone to them.

wheresmymojo · 03/11/2019 15:41

If you have a grey/silver and navy blue base palette you can then also mix in cream with one of the following:

  • mustard
  • green
  • pale pink

The grey would be the base (so the biggest %) with the navy the next biggest %, then cream and then a small % in mustard, pink or green (see second photo which gives an idea of this kind of split).

I will pop to my local b&m tomorrow and see about getting some orange or navy cushions for now and see if they grow on me.
The glitter wall yes I don't like it very much looks very different to the tutorial on YouTube lol, I am going to paper it now but need to put a lining paper first to hide the imperfections. It's private rented so not getting into plastering and stuff to sort the state of the wall out.

Thank you for all your ideas x

I agree that you need to introduce colour and it makes sense to use the orange in the door glass as your inspiration. But don’t go for big blocks of orange. Instead, think about how you can introduce warm colours through pattern and in different ways.

I had a quick look at the Dunelm website, and found this picture. www.dunelm.com/product/contemporary-harbour-orange-canvas-1000119454

It has various shades of grey to link with what you have already, and also brings in warmer shades of orange/yellow/ochre.

Ochre is very popular just now and the darker shades are close to orange. I’m sure you’d be able to find cushions, picture frames etc with touches of ochre.
