We are about to put the house on the market all the agents have been round have raved about the great location, size, garden etc but in some shape or form suggested a bit of styling wouldn't go amiss BlushGrin.

Oh wise mumsnetters can you help? Bedroom is the first room to tackle photo attached budget is minimal but we don't mind spending a little bit on some stuff furnishings or accessories but no idea where to start!

Still no.

ElizabethMainwaring · 18/05/2019 23:31

Nope!

Instant thoughts, nothing! Most serious buyers should be able to see past anything not to their taste in your bedroom. It's uncluttered (clear the top of the drawers) and not fussy.

Personally I think the chandelier is very dated, as are the curtains (ideally full length in a neutral colour, but this would be a huge waste of money).

For a few Bob you could put in a more modern pendant lampshade and throw a few additional (brighter) cushions around - mustard would go with your red/blue scheme.

But, I'm shocked your agents think you need to style this differently, it's very inoffensive!

goldpendant · 18/05/2019 23:34

You could also paint the wooden wardrobe doors in a more neutral shade, which would make the room look larger.

ElizabethMainwaring · 18/05/2019 23:34

???

Houseyhousey · 18/05/2019 23:45

Thanks @goldpendant. Painting cupboard doors is a good idea and something I can do on my day off plus I might see if I can get a new simple pendant light as current one doesn't go at all - ceilings are low upstairs so would a pendant be ok?

It won't surprise you to hear both curtains & light were hand-me-downs so bar a coat of paint & new carpet we've not spent anything in the room in the 10 years we've been here so probably overdue a makeover

I think full length curtains and then make the bed more opulent a throw and cushions I'd make it more decadent a grown up sumptuous room

isseywithcats · 19/05/2019 18:31

maybe look in a charity shop for some curtains as they sell cheap and would look good dosent matter if you like them and then when you move give them back to the charity shop, our shop sells pairs of curtains for around £10 a pair

Irulez · 19/05/2019 18:33

Paint the walls white/off-white and hang floor length curtains again in a very pale off-white shade. That's all I'd do.

mimibunz · 19/05/2019 18:40

Looks like you need texture. Try a bamboo shade on the window with a sheer linen curtain. Anthropologie have great styles. Margo Selby has gorgeous cushions with great textures and colours. The mirror at the foot of the bed can be switched out to an oval or round shape with a beaded texture, champagne colour. Finally, the walls could use some prints. Check out Pinterest for ideas. Your bed and dresser are lovely!

Papergirl1968 · 19/05/2019 19:12

Looks fine to me apart from I'd clear the top of the chest of drawers and maybe move those things next to it - looks like picture frames to one side and a box or suitcase to the other?
I think the curtains are fine. Full length would block the radiator.
Looks lovely and spacious.

justapaperbag · 19/05/2019 19:18

It's fine. Surely people won't offer on your house based on your curtains or even light fittings? It looks clean, presentable and neutral. I'd ask your agent to be more specific about what they think you should change. Go round the house with them and write down what they suggest, then do what you have time and budget for.

kissmelittleass · 19/05/2019 20:53

I've sold a few houses and your room just needs a few small tweaks to make it more appealing. I would declutter the top of the chest of drawers, get rid of the chandelier and get a simple modern lampshade, dispose of the awful curtains and get a neutral colour, they might be ok for your new house? So not a waste of money. Apart from that it looks good imo

Houseyhousey · 19/05/2019 23:27

Thanks all. Walls are very off white pale anyway but look darker due to lighting but I'm going to see if I can get some neutral long curtains from homesense or somewhere similar and a nice throw as we'd take that with us anyway and ordered a simple shade from dunelm. Clearance is underway Grin

Widowodiw · 19/05/2019 23:34

I wouldn’t paint the cupboard doors that’s what make the room have that something different. Just change the curtains if I’m honest.

PickAChew · 19/05/2019 23:35

Lose the stripey curtains and cushions (replace with lain ones in a soft neutral from dunelm) and find an inoffensive long bit of "artwork" or a trio of bits to go above the headboard, as your walls are plain and estate agents like this crap. A satin-ish throw over the bottom quarter of your bed should go full cliche. Borrow something or hit a charity shop.

That said, regarding the curtains, a decent agent would take photos in daylight with them open and your chandelier not lit - your bedside lights on at most.

PickAChew · 19/05/2019 23:36

Plain, not Iain.

Houseyhousey · 15/06/2019 11:05

£30 well spent I hope Grin

Your first pics made me immediately think premier inn bedroom. Nothing wrong in that but perhaps just need to add a few homely bits.

GlamGiraffe · 15/06/2019 11:16

Yes the curtains make a great difference. Maybe just put a stylish based and a photo on top of the chest of drawers and nothing else and you're done. Good work.
