Help, I really don't like my new carpet!

Now I appreciate that this is a first-world problem, but our new living room carpet was installed yesterday and I really don't like it. The sample looked like it would go with the F&B Drop Cloth colour on the units and ceiling, but in reality it clashes. It's too light for the room and ruins the cosy cocooning effect we wanted from the Inchyra Blue colour on the walls. Plus, it seems to have an insipid blue tinge to it.

Does anyone with good interior design knowledge know if there anything I can do? Would a rug of a particular colour help tie it all in? Should I move it to a different room and start again? Ahh!

For reference, we ideally wanted wooden floors, but couldn't afford to rip up the skirting and get the whole room redecorated in the process (we decorated the room before thinking about the floor....).

Any advice greatly appreciated!

I think it looks ok but a rug would definitely tie the whole room in. I hate picking things like carpets as its so hard to tell what it will look like!

MaverickSnoopy · 17/05/2019 09:46

I like it but iswym about it not being the cosy room you wanted. I agree that a rug of some kind will help, ditto a couple of thick throws. Perhaps some good low lighting for the evenings and then you'll at least have your cosy evenings. What are the windows like?

Ribeebie · 17/05/2019 09:46

I agree a rug would make the room all tie together really well. It's a big change when the new carpet arrives. Give yourself time to get used to it and you may change your mind

LoafofSellotape · 17/05/2019 09:48

A dark rug will sort that outSmile

Falcon1 · 17/05/2019 09:51

Thanks everyone. It's ridiculous how much this has upset me!

What kind of rug do you think would go? I have lost all faith now in my ability to choose things!

Maverick - the windows are a large bay, with the original Edwardian sashes. The surrounds are painted in Drop Cloth.

Honestly, it looked better before with the orange pine floorboards. :(

Something abstract with a faded/muted feel rather than symmetrical/geometric solid colours.

Maybe something from the Nourison celestial range?

Falcon1 · 17/05/2019 11:05

Thanks Member. I'll look it up.

It is a bit bright isn't it? Especially when the light hits it.

I think a rug the same colour as your sofa would work. Nice dark brown one, maybe with a pattern.

Claphands · 17/05/2019 13:01

rugwise-something faded/kelim/patterned

Iris1654 · 17/05/2019 18:15

I’d move it. It will always annoy you. It’s too blue.
I’d go with the hardwood floor, not sure why you would need to redecorate the whole room. Can you not put silly higher skirting in and touch up?

EspressoX10 · 18/05/2019 14:29

I've done hardwood in two houses and in one of them they just took the skirtings off, installed hardwood and put the old skirtings back.

I'd say that skirtings are a lot cheaper than the wood planks so the cost wouldn't be significant when compared to actual floor itself.

Also have you considered oiling or painting the pine floor? I'd do that if I was on a budget (but I'm foreign and HATE carpets)

Falcon1 · 18/05/2019 16:35

We were advised by our builder that taking off the skirting would probably bring some of the plaster from the wall, and therefore require repainting. Since it's F&B paint you can't just touch up...we've just done the kitchen and costs escalated. So we just decided to sod it and get a carpet. Regretting it now!

I'd go for a low pile, woven style dark navy rug, something with mustard flecks or stitching in

peachgreen · 18/05/2019 16:38

The room is beautiful. I agree the carpet doesn't quite work though. Personally given the cost of rugs I'd get it redone in something darker and keep the other new carpet to use in a smaller room.

BentNeckLady · 18/05/2019 16:39

We sanded and stained our original 1930s pine floor to match the original solid oak hallway floor and it was really successful.

Heymummee · 18/05/2019 16:43

I agree a flat woven rug would be lovely, the Nourison Celestial range would look great. Maybe something dark with a mustard accent to tie in with the cushions.

Kabloom · 18/05/2019 16:47

My flooring installer undercut the skirting boards, so that’s a possibility if you really wanted hardwood.

LemonMousse · 18/05/2019 16:58

It's a beautiful room - maybe it will grow on you?

It is light in contrast to the surroundings but I still think it looks lovely.

Bluntness100 · 18/05/2019 17:00

I think it looks lovely too and contrasts lovely with the walls.

wonkylegs · 18/05/2019 17:12

What about something abstract

Undercutting skirting is a possibility but tricky in old houses where walls aren't straight.

We got around this by buying a fancy 'bead' which was installed where wood floor meets old skirting. Lots of options on Champion Timber, once installed and decorated ours looks like it was always part of the original skirting.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 18/05/2019 23:44

Sorry OP it just looks to ‘modern’ for the room, I would take it up an stain the pine floor instead, that room needs a wooden floor I’m afraid.

TheoriginalLEM · 18/05/2019 23:51

I dont think its a FWP actually. Your living environment greatly affects your mental health so you need to be comfortable.

Im very jealous of thar room. Id love a dark colour like that on the walls but living room is tiny and has very little natural light.

I agree that a rug us what is needed. A traditional patterned one would be great if costs allow.

womanhuman · 19/05/2019 00:02

Something like this? (John Lewis)

In any case, something dark, plain or traditional, not matchy matchy with your walls will sort it.

Beautiful room.
