Help, I really don't like my new carpet!

Now I appreciate that this is a first-world problem, but our new living room carpet was installed yesterday and I really don't like it. The sample looked like it would go with the F&B Drop Cloth colour on the units and ceiling, but in reality it clashes. It's too light for the room and ruins the cosy cocooning effect we wanted from the Inchyra Blue colour on the walls. Plus, it seems to have an insipid blue tinge to it.

Does anyone with good interior design knowledge know if there anything I can do? Would a rug of a particular colour help tie it all in? Should I move it to a different room and start again? Ahh!

For reference, we ideally wanted wooden floors, but couldn't afford to rip up the skirting and get the whole room redecorated in the process (we decorated the room before thinking about the floor....).

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your taking the time to help. Some great advice here.

After a few days, it is starting to seem less awful to me, but I still don't like it. And it's not just the colour - it's the way that it shows up every footprint and furniture mark! I had no idea it would do that.

Bettyboo - I'm starting to think that you may be right. It's a wooden floor I really want.

Goldpendant - is there any chance you could send me a picture of your beading? Our builder suggested beading originally, but said it wouldn't look as good as taking off the skirting and laying underneath it.

I would repaint the walls to tie it all in.

Crikey this goes to show what kids do to a place.... we've only been here 9 months!

Anyway, I digress.... we bought this in champion timber, painted same colour as skirting. I think it looks pretty good, certainly better than beading.

I'd go with a rug that echoes the dark walls. That will pull the room together. This sort of colour but maybe a bit more luxurious and tradition in design.

goldpendant · 19/05/2019 19:42

We couldn't take the skirting off as the old walls are laven (?) plaster, much would have come away. Undercutting isn't advised on old wonky walls either. Go for your wood floor OP! I'd go for a rich walnut colour in that room.

PS, how is the Inchrya blue? I want to do our bedroom!

StillLostinEdinburgh · 19/05/2019 19:46

Any sale rooms or auction houses in your area? That’s where we got our rugs. Traditional patterned ones. Apart from being a fraction of the price - about a tenth - of new rugs, I like them better than anything i saw in John Lewis etc.

museumum · 19/05/2019 19:50

Wow. It’s bright. But it kind of ties with the fireplace and ceiling. You need a BIG rug in the middle with wall and/or sofa colours in it.

Falcon1 · 19/05/2019 20:07

The problem is, it's not just the colour. It's also the way the carpet shows up every footprint and furniture indent. I didn't realise it would do that!

I'm starting to think that a wooden floor might be the best option, once we can afford it. With a rug in the short term maybe (although they all seem to be hundreds of pounds!)

goldpendent - I'm very interested in your beading. Is there any chance you could send me a photo? Our builder suggested beading as an option but said it wouldn't look great.

I've posted one a little bit down thread? Can you see it?

troppibambini · 19/05/2019 20:12

Could you not just take it up and paint the floorboards?
You could go dark or light and then get a nice rug?
I'm not a fan of rugs on carpet but that's just personal taste.

And another

Ha, gotta love F&B paint names!

I like your room. Restful. A rug the same colour as the wall would tie it together.

Falcon1 · 19/05/2019 20:26

Thanks goldpendant. That doesn't look bad at all!

Troppibambini - we didn't consider painting the floorboards as they were just so draughty. It's a north facing room, with huge single glazed windows. It's bloody freezing! We thought our only option was a new floor over the top to seal to the draughts or a carpet. Due to the redecoration costs the builder told us the wood floor would entail, we decided on carpet. I've always thought a carpet is the cosier option in a living room, but I'm just not sure the decor is right for one.

As a temporary solution, if anyone spots a large rug they think would go for under £200, please do let me know!

And thank you for everyone on your compliments of the living room! I did love the decor before the carpet arrived...

Could you sand and varnish your original floorboards and then add a rug?

womanhuman · 19/05/2019 21:42

We’re all showing you expensive rugs because it looks like an expensive room. Smile

There’s loads of cheaper ones available.

I think the feetprint thing might just be because it’s so new too - I’m not aware of it lasting long wherever I’ve been aware of it. (If it was a cheapie carpet- if it was a spendy carpet I have no experience!)

wonkylegs · 19/05/2019 22:32

If you have a decent crawl space underneath the floorboards you can insulate to stop the draughts - it's a DIY job but isn't that pleasant to do due to the crawling around. DH did ours, it stopped the draughts but also helps with the energy costs overall.

We did ours with sheep's wool batts of insulation, strapping and a staple gun.
Generic mineral wool (rockwool type thing) batts would be cheaper but not as nice to handle.

amandajanemoore74 · 20/05/2019 12:12

Your room is lovely....I agree that a really lovely rug with colours from your walls and units plus a another accent would give it the cosy feel....

Slacksandblouse · 20/05/2019 12:19

I think it looks lovely. And although I love the colour of your walls you may change it in 10 years and your carpet remains nice and neutral. A rug will help break up the contrast if you need it

flirtygirl · 20/05/2019 16:26

Op it looks lovely. I think it's a great colour and tone to highlight the darkness of the walls. A darker colour carpet would make the room dingy.

Spanglybangles · 20/05/2019 17:40

I think this is a gorgeous rug which may go nicely in your room.

I would have the carpet refitted eg in a bedroom, then sand the boards and stain them. Or not even sand them, just scrub and stain, if they are not too bad. I did this once and it worked out ok.

StillNumb · 26/05/2019 14:03

Hi OP, would something like this help if you decided to have a wooden floor laid www.skirting4u.co.uk/31-mdf-skirting-board-covers

I came across it when I was looking for something to box a couple of raddiator pipes in. There's a couple of companies that do it and it can be made to measure.

Kestrelsky72 · 30/05/2019 19:00

You just need a classic Persian rug. I like the light carpet but Persian rug will add cosiness and they never go out of style. I think scandi is wrong way to go if you want warmth. pin.it/zsk7wqzqqy3hyt
