Has anyone successfully painted their furniture?

I have some furniture, tv stand, dining table etc, that looks like this and would like it to be grey or white like in the second photo.

My furniture is Oak the smaller items are veneer. I'm fed up with the brown but don't want to ruin what is essentially good furniture.

Have I got any hope of it looking ok?

@Hoppahouse The knobs on your painted unit are really nice - if you get that right it makes a world of difference to the final result

Hoppahouse · 17/02/2019 14:25

They were the original knobs - got lucky there!

This is my before and after £5 bargain!

What is it, toom?

Toomanycats99 · 17/02/2019 22:20

I'm using it as a blanket box - some sort of chest on little legs originally I guess.

It was from a second hand charity warehouse near me. Also got 3 pine bedside tables for £5 each and a cheval (?) mirror with a drawer at the bottom. That was more at £40 but still a fraction of the cost of an already painted one.

Aridane · 17/02/2019 22:28

Wow - have you painted them all?

Rafabella8 · 17/02/2019 23:01

Fusion mineral paint is my favourite finish at the moment. I do use annie Sloan but preferring fusion.

I had some dark wood shelves and I sprayed them cream to match the new fireplace , was so pleased with them. Preparation is key .

Aridane · 18/02/2019 10:17

But the joy of chalk paint is that no preparation is required!

I did this dresser a few years ago with Annie Sloan chalk paint and wax. It was easy and lasted well. When we redecorated we wanted built in storage so sold it on.

Wow - that’s fabulous! Which AS shade is it?

mrsglowglow · 20/02/2019 20:10

It's called country grey. The unit was originally an antique pine finish and took 2 coats plus the wax finish. It went on very easily and no sanding required.

Aridane · 20/02/2019 22:08

It's a lovely subtle colour

Go for it, I've painted a few things bought second hand. All done with just aged white crown eggshell. The sideboard isn't even 'proper' wood.

I can’t get on with chalk paint but I’ve had really good results by lightly sanding, then wiping over with slightly soapy water, then 2-3 light coats of wood primer then 2 coats of f&b eggshell. Well worth the effort.

Hoppahouse · 20/03/2019 12:49

Can anyone please advise on the best treatment for wood that has been sanded and will be used as a type of window sil and shelves.

I'm confused by the choice of varnish, wax or oil!
