I have some furniture, tv stand, dining table etc, that looks like this and would like it to be grey or white like in the second photo.

My furniture is Oak the smaller items are veneer. I'm fed up with the brown but don't want to ruin what is essentially good furniture.

Have I got any hope of it looking ok?

And because I had spare paint left over, a small bathroom corner shelf

The desk was painted with Aldi chalk paint, the small drawers is part of my bedroom furniture, painted in Laura Ashley eggshell & the little cupboard was a very battered charity shop find, painted in Mylands eggshell.

Thank you- and I am the laziest person in the world! Just less effort than chucking the chest of drawers and buying new ones

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:02

And then because I was on a roll, the bathroom cabinet

Haha I’m the same & as it’s not that expensive to do, I can change the colours when I get bored with it.

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:03

Wow, they are lovely dont!

dontcallmelen · 13/02/2019 11:03

Love the green so pretty, my Dh says it’s it not nailed down it gets painted in this house.

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:04

I see you wax. My efforts on waxing were a bit of a disaster- hence moving to varnish

dontcallmelen · 13/02/2019 11:05

Thank you Ariadne I find it quite therapeutic, as you don’t think about other stuff going on.

dontcallmelen · 13/02/2019 11:07

Yes it’s been trail & error though, have found the a big fat round brush makes a difference, I haven’t tried varnishing but will give it a go on the next bit I can find to paint.

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:07

I started off with an Annie Sloan starter kit of 2 mini paints, one wax polish and paint and wax brush (did the first chest of drawers with that) - then bought a full sized tin of green paint

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:08

I like it because it’s so easy and makes such a difference

dontcallmelen · 13/02/2019 11:08

I got some really cheap waxing brushes from Aldi, also Aldi wax is good value.

Once my bedroom has been redecorated (not by me, I hasten to add), I am thinking of painting my baked bean orange bed. Not sure what colour to paint it though. And whether I would get bored half way through. Or end up spilling paint all over the floor boards

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:11

Is Aldi chalk paint as good as Annie Sloan?

dontcallmelen · 13/02/2019 11:11

I started with Annie Sloan, but found it quite difficult to work with so tried out the cheaper versions & have had good results, also eggshell is good as I find it doesn’t scratch or flake as much, but I reckon varnish would probably make the chalk paint a bit more robust.

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:12

Lone the colour palettes of Annie Sloan chalk paints - especially as they’re colours that generally would never have occurred to me

dontcallmelen · 13/02/2019 11:12

I really like the Aldi paint, very easy to work with & gives a nice smooth finish, only thing is they don’t have many colours the desk is Aldi dove grey.

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:12

Love, not lone

Aridane · 13/02/2019 11:14

It’s a shame pine has to go baked bean orange!

dontcallmelen · 13/02/2019 11:14

B&Q have also started to do a range of chalk paint, with quite a good colour range, yy though AS colour palette is amazing especially the really bright colours.

dontcallmelen · 13/02/2019 11:16

Lol my bedroom furniture was horrific baked bean colour, but such good quality I couldn’t justify getting new, made a huge difference when I painted it, I sanded & waxed the tops which helped tone down the orangeness.

starcruiser · 17/02/2019 13:02

I liked Rustoleum better than Annie Sloan .
Have done a small table and plan to do a massive mirror.
Think the key is not to do too much eg -your whole lounge or dining room furniture.
A bit here and there looks better and adds to the aesthetic .
(Thinking about my mother who painted the whole kitchen , 2 sets of bedroom furniture and is now shabbying up her lounge!) STOP!!

Aridane · 17/02/2019 13:05

I think you're right, star - but once you start, it's difficult to stop...

Hoppahouse · 17/02/2019 13:39

I painted this unit and tv stand last year. Really pleased with it was previously quite orangey wood. I did the walls Grey and white too and it goes so much better with the wooden floorboards and oak fire surround.
I used primer followed by chalky rustoleum.
