How to disguise an ugly carpet! (Picture)

Evening

I am looking at renting an office, but the flooring is stained and ugly. The landlord isn't prepared to share the cost of re-fitting.

Other than a huge rug (would this work?) anyone have any ideas of any temporary ways to disguise an ugly carpet?

The room is big, about 4.5mx 4.5m

My budget is around £100!

Ikea?

Namechangesam · 08/01/2019 21:58

Thanks for your suggestions. Hmm I was thinking something bigger or something that covered the floor entirely.

Im probably asking the impossible for £100!

Why not just hire a rug doctor and clean it up? Or get a professional carpet cleaner in - will definitely come in at under £100 for a room and will make a huge difference.

Rug doctor is my final resort
I want to brighten the room (my business is something along the lines of a beauty salon). So was thinking a temporary, light coloured flooring would be good.

It'll look a lot different with furniture and decor in and strategically placed (over stains)

A huge rug will look awkward IMO and not sure what else you can put down :S

sirmione16 · 08/01/2019 22:09

Either that or you chat to the landlord about reflooring with vinyl or something cheap but it's not temporary so he may not be pleased

Soontobe60 · 08/01/2019 22:12

I don't go for a professional clean too. Rugs can be slippy on carpet, furniture will hide lots of the floor, £100 is very little to cover that size flooring effectively.

Namechangesam · 08/01/2019 22:17

Thank you for all your help and opinions!

I have found a 3x3 rug for £140

Or I could possibly get a rug that covers half the room. This part of the room I could place a coffee table and chairs as my waiting area. To make the room feel a bit friendlier.

Would be concerned about tripping re: the public to be honest. Rug Doctor first of all.

Believeitornot · 08/01/2019 22:19

If you haven’t signed a contact I’d find somewhere else.

TheFaerieQueene · 08/01/2019 22:21

Rugs could be a trip hazard. I would get a professional carpet cleaning company in. I’m sure it will clean up and look a lot better than a rug.

Namechangesam · 08/01/2019 22:21

Yes tripping is a big hazard. You are right.

How about creating zones to the room.

I could get a big rug and place it infront of one of the windows and into the corner. Put coffee table and sofa over it.

It might just brighten the room enough doing this?

Then use the carpet cleaner on the other half.

I attached a photo to my first post if that makes sense?

Laminate flooring? You could put it on top of the carpet, and take it up.agaon when you leave?

madmum5811 · 08/01/2019 22:26

Beautiful windows btw.

FrogsSpawnofSanta · 08/01/2019 22:27

Do you know what is under the carpet? If it is decent floorboards could they be sanded and stained? Assuming the landlord is agreeable to the carpet being removed.

Roystonv · 08/01/2019 22:28

Yep trip hazard's to be avoided if at all possible. If it won't clean and the landlord won't replace then you either don't take the tenancy or you bite the bullet and replace the floor as it doesn't sound the type of business where a poor standard of cleanliness/presentation would be acceptable.

badg3r · 08/01/2019 22:28

What is the floor like underneath?

DollyRose · 08/01/2019 22:28

How about some cheap carpet tiles?

XmasPostmanBos · 08/01/2019 22:32

Rug dr is really easy to use it I would get that first and do the whole floor it would be easy, but although it is good at getting out dirt it may not get out all stains. Make sure you buy the pretreatment sprays for stains you can get with it.

Lightsdown · 08/01/2019 22:33

The space doesn't seem suitable for a beauty type place tbh

FloofenHoofen · 08/01/2019 22:34

Could you not just order some vinyl off eBay and fit yourself/get someone else to do it?

Namechangesam · 08/01/2019 22:35

I will find out what is under the carpet. If it's floor boards that is an excellent idea. Sanding and painting could look lovely. (although I have a feeling it is concrete type floor. As it's the basement of a Georgian home)

Laying laminate over the carpet is an option. I'll look into that. Although might be expensive and a bit tricky

Rug doctors are really cheap to hire and very easy to use on empty spaces like this one. Do that first. Then arrange furniture strategically to hide the worst stains. And then draw the eyes up away from the floor with gorgeous prints on the walls, lamps and a vase of flowers at reception.
