I need the leather couches to stay. I hate curtains but these patio doors face the TV so hard to see TV unless dark outside. So need curtains but what colour? Hate the bookshelves but very useful. Should I paint them or remove? Also need to change the rug. Any ideas would be fab please?

That looks like a great space, I love it. I don't think your coffee table goes with the room or the furniture though. What colours do you generally like? I would keep the walls neutral and pick out colours in the furnishings and curtains maybe.

Seniorschoolmum · 17/08/2018 15:17

Agree with Minor, it looks like a good size. If you are going to keep the sofas, could you do throws and cushions in pastels.
And could you paint the book cases because at the moment, they are sort of framing the windows with dark.
Which way does the room face? When does it get sunshine?

Invisimamma · 17/08/2018 15:20

I think it looks quite nice. Are you looking to spend much? How about plantation shutters instead of curtains? I think natural light colours for the bookshelves and rug.

kitbabingley · 17/08/2018 15:23

That's a beautiful room! Agree with making the bookshelves lighter, that would really brighten it up. I'd go for something very neutral (dare I say magnolia...?) for the walls and pick out some other tones for curtains, rug etc. Sage green would go nicely with the brown of your sofas.

ClashCityRocker · 17/08/2018 15:27

I think it's a gorgeous room with the potential to be absolutely stunning.

I think I'd lighten the woodwork and that would make a huge difference.

And change the coffee table.

LiesLiesLiesLies · 17/08/2018 15:38

The doors go out to the garden which is south east facing so quite light. The bookshelves go right up to the door frames so the bunching up of curtains would block a lot of light. Not sure if plantation shutters would work as no space to fold back due to bookcases.

Is the coffee table a Vitra? I'll buy it off you! Definitely don't get rid of that, best thing in the room. You actually need to pull the other sofa in and delineate the space a bit. Paint the shelves. Fabulous room.

StillCalendula · 18/08/2018 00:13

I would install blinds. The type that you can pull up and down from both bottom and top so that you can adjust them to keep the light off the TV

sandgrown · 18/08/2018 06:50

I love your room, especially the windows. I agree that you should lighten the woodwork. Would it be worth sacrificing the book shelves to have some nice window coverings ?
.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 18/08/2018 07:20

It's actually not a lot of bookcase, really, for the effect it has on the room. I think you should get more efficient book storage somewhere else and get rid of those. If you must keep them, definitely paint them white.

LiesLiesLiesLies · 18/08/2018 07:27

I think the bookcases need to go don’t they! They dominate the room. We could then have nice curtains or shutters or whatever - maybe curtains that would frame the window doors.
ourkidmolly yes it was a rather pricy table! I’d prefer to keep it too. It worked better in our old house but was on a different rug.
I’m thinking one of those white/cream rugs with the black lines on could work - I like those but they’re everywhere!!!

This rug

Albeit very popular. Also probably not very kid friendly.

Its a fab room space. But that couch is too far away from the fire. Could you make different zones. So a cosy zone around the fire and around the coffee table. Then maybe a reading zone down the back with a lamp/ cosy chair. Or a sideboard along the back of the moved forward couch with some things on it to break the space. Think in sections not the whole room. Look at pictues online for examples of this. I love the book cases. Can't see them too clearly but could you break up the books with photos/ favourite objects. That room has fabulous potential. Soft knitted throws would take the hard look off the leather couches and introduce more colour.

Honeyroar · 18/08/2018 07:39

What's on the other side of the room? Could the bookshelves move to that side? Could the settees move so they face the windows (and the tv so the sun isn't shining on it). I always think it's a shame when seating doesn't face a view or garden, but looks at a wall.

dudsville · 18/08/2018 07:45

I'd reposition your furniture, use plantation shutters nit curtains, keep and paint the book shelves. The rug is ok but the room looks sparse so I might get more rugs, though not the white one you posted. Might consider a different wall colour.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/08/2018 07:46

Love the room, what a gorgeous space. I think the main problem is the rug- the one you’ve chosen is lovely, my friend has it and it’s gorgeous, however how old are your kids?
The bookcases aren’t the problem so much the colour of them, if they were in a white and could fade into the background a bit I’d keep them.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/08/2018 07:47

I don't think the bookcases need to go, just paint them the same colour as the walls, but go for something with more character. One thing I don't like is the white blind on the little window.

Turn the sofas around, see you you can place the TV someplace else, maybe even in front of the window? or place the arch chair there, to face the garden?

Also, the sofas are too far from each other. They need to be closer together.

Where is the door?

landoflostcontent · 18/08/2018 07:49

It's a beautiful room. Love the sofas and the rug. We have very pale ivory voile curtains that soften the edges round the windows but don't block the light.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/08/2018 07:49

The rug you've chosen is lively, but it's far too small.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/08/2018 07:51

Lastly, I wouldn't go for white, as in the rug and the walls.

It's a lovely space, you can go for dusty darker greens and blues and it will be lovely.

Bluewidow · 18/08/2018 07:54

Blinds are your friends here op. I like the bookshelves. Personally because of my tastes I go all out retro in this room - geometric wallpaper, add some colour. Not to everyone's tastes so if you wanted a more modern look I'd paint the bookshelves white to make them less obvious. Put some
Nice ornaments on there too along with your books. I'd also move the settee that is alongside the bookshelves if you can it
Blocks the light and the bookshelves .

LiesLiesLiesLies · 18/08/2018 08:03

It’s hard to reposition furniture as it’s a thoroughfare. There’s a door to the right of the fireplace leading to a playroom. There’s no door into the room just an opening from hall way/kitchen. So furniture facing the window would block this thoroughfare. The couch is currently against that wall as the previous owners have all the cabling for the sky box etc etc on the floor there so the sofa currently hides it until we get a tv electrician to sort it somehow.

OP posts:
LiesLiesLiesLies · 18/08/2018 08:06

But yes that sofa needs to join in.

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/08/2018 08:15

If that room is a thoroughfare then that's another reason to reconsider the white carpet.

You might get it for your bedroom for a quieter room.

It's a tricky one, this room, it looks big though, so if you group the sofas, them would you still have space on the back of the room to walk through? Then you will definitely need something on the wall to keep it balanced.

user1471530109 · 18/08/2018 08:19

It may be my eyes, but do the bookcase units extend over the windows? Like they are purpose built for the space?

I think it's a fabulous room. I'd paint the bookcases and get something to soften the windows. I don't owe my curtains on my French doors so I'm not sure that you need curtains as such.

Wish my room looked like that! (Keep the rug. It's lovely)
