F&B Whites?

Right you F&B experts, I’ve got to get some testers today after a colour disaster. I need a soft white.

Wevet ~ is this grey?
All white ~ is this stark or soft?
Wimborne ~ I think this will be too yellow

Just painted our entire loft room in slipper satin incl ceilings (they are vaulted so didn’t want the join line) It’s awful, looks a muddy green. Gutted after all that work!

There is very little natural light in the room. I even tried Dulux Timeless on a wall to correct it, too yellow!

Please help!

Ok so difficult to explain... but All White is very well, white. It is bright and it is quite stark. Wimborne is not yellow in slightest. I would describe as a true white but without the brightness of All White... I hope that makes sense! I haven’t used Wevet personally. But if you’re after a soft white then Wimborne should tick the box.

F&B can be a bit tricky though and some of their undertones can appear differently in different spaces/lights. I recommend buying the testers (I always use find ways of using them up like repainting an older mirror) and and painting a considerable stripe on all 4 walls then looking at it in different lights. If you look on the website people also add photos of their own homes under each paint colour (it’s at the bottom with the reviews) and I find that really helpful. So I’d definitely get the testers before painting again!

I agree! I obsessed for weeks looking at paint colours & did see a lot of photos online of slipper satin which looked a nice chalky off white ~ not in my room it’s not, very green! It’s more of a ‘colour’ whereas I need a white itms?

Wimborne white looks slightly yellowy on the colour card to me? but maybe I should give it a go? All white looks just what I’m after but of course the cards don’t always match the paint!

Any other opinions/experiences?

The cards never match the paint!! If you can get to a store they have those painted block things that give a much better idea of what the paint actually looks like compared to the swatch. I’ve used Wimborne on woodwork with a grey on the walls, and also on the outside of my house. Doesn’t look yellow or heaven forbid cream in either scenario. I’ve used all white in the kitchen and it is bright but very clean looking, although that room gets a lot of sun which probably makes the paint appear more bright. It can depend so much on the light in your room/other paint colours you’ve used... maybe order a sample of each to try?

It's best to swatch F&B colour in the room and if different walls get different light you should swatch it on each wall to really know what it will look like. We painted large sheets of paper and put them in different places (in a corner, in direct light etc) in the room.

You may need something cooler/more blue-grey if you don't want a green tint. We have Strong White in our living room and Ammonite in the hall. Hall gets little direct light and in living room one window is on the side return and the other is north-facing (both a cool watery light). Both colours are a cool light grey. In this setting Strong White is barely detectable as a colour.

I find Wimbourne quite yellow, like a pale pistachio green.

Yes, you really do need tester pots as they come up very different. I would say all those colours are white-white - it's when you put them against different colours that the variations come out. So I have Wevet on skirting, next to Strong White walls and Purbeck Stone bannisters and doors - it's a vv pale grey. And I have Wimborne White as trim in a room painted Lulworth blue - it's just a bit more creamy. But I think if you looked at both, you would probably say they're the same colour.

Jumping on here - I'm looking for the same and considering Janes White.... thoughts on that one? I'm also going to look at Wimborne. We have Wevet on our floors and it looks very white....

Have you tried Pointing?

We have used Wimborne as the white throughout our house and it's very bright but soft, not harsh so goes well with everything.

The whites are grouped into different tints in F&B... so if you’re looking for a warm/cool/yellow/pink whatever... there is a group of paints under that ‘umbrella’.

Having said that, best idea is to cover some wallpaper lining paper with a couple of coats, and stick up A4 sized sheets in different parts of the room, and check the colour at different times of the day.

Also wanted to suggest Pointing, it’s slightly creamier but not stark. We have it on all our ceilings and in the kitchen and the woodwork - it looks good in every light.

I’ve used Wimborne all through the house on woodwork/ceilings next to various colours (including slipper satin) it’s not yellow at all... See pics

We've painted our interior house in Pointing. It's a lovely warm white that looks fresh and clean but not starck. Wimborne white is a bit colder by comparison.

I agree with gerbita about it being a very warm white. In the evening it kind of gently 'glows'

All White is probably what you want. It lacks blue pigment like normal whites so is 'war,er' or less cool.

Blackened is f&b's coolest white btw not all white.

Also, of the room is bringing our greens and yellows, maybe Great White would be worth a try? It has a red undertone but is most definatley white.

imissgin thank you, I'd always dismissed dropcloth based on the colour chart but love it in your pic.

How about ammonite o.p? I think that's a cool silvery white....

I also have it in a darker space with down pipe and pigeon...

imissgin STUNNING and Don't even get me started on that floor! It's beautiful. I'm starting to feel the first distinct pangs of house envy! Better call me greensheep....
