Dishwasher in utility room

Hi All,

we're about to launch into re-designing our kitchen and utility room and somebody suggested to us to move the dishwasher out of the kitchen and put it in the utility room, and installing a sink & bin in the utility as well. I like the idea of the sink but not convinced about the practicalities of the dishwasher being out there... all the trucking in and out loading and emptying it. Or maybe I'm over-thinking this.. Would love to hear someone else's thoughts on this. Thanks!

Why not put the washing machine there and keep the dishwasher in the kitchen

Seeline · 21/02/2018 12:27

We have washing machine and dish washer in the utility and it is fine. It is literally a room straight off the kitchen though so no real trek involved. We also have a second sink in the utility which is really useful for dirty stuff - clearing up after decorating, dirty sports kit and boots etc.

PETRONELLAS · 21/02/2018 12:29

I really wouldn’t. All that unloading when you’re putting plates away and carrying two mugs at a time.
Our builders couldn’t believe I didn’t want a utility sink but not one day have I regretted it - we have a stainless steel sink which deals with it all.

Todamhottoday · 21/02/2018 12:32

I have a dishwasher in the utility, not far from the sink and so on , but I hate it wish it was in the actual kitchen next to the sink

CaurnieBred · 21/02/2018 12:34

Only if you are going to store the plates and cutlery near it

goldenslumbers1 · 21/02/2018 12:35

We've recently built a new kitchen and utility room. I have positioned the dishwasher close to crockery cupboard and cutlery drawer, so emptying it is a doddle - having to carry everything to/from the utility would drive me bonkers, even though its only a few steps away.
Also, another enthusiastic vote for a utility sink - its great for washing out bins and hand washing clothes etc.
We don't have a bin in the utility and I don't regret it.

womaninatightspot · 21/02/2018 12:37

I know someone who has the dishwasher in the utility; it works for them. They have a smallish sink/ in the cupboard bin in the main kitchen. Big sink for soaking/ dishwasher/ bin in the utility. Nice to be able to disappear the dishes quickly if you have guests. I was thinking of relocating my dishwasher too but then I'd have to find somewhere else to dump the massive amounts of clean laundry that seems to live on the dryer.

minipie · 21/02/2018 12:37

Gosh no I wouldn't have the dishwasher in the utility. What a pain to schlep everything in and out.

If you're looking for things to move out of the kitchen into the utiity I'd suggest a cupboard for less used pans, serving dishes and appliances. Washing machine obviously. Wine rack. Also consider an extra small freezer if you freeze a lot. Microwave and toaster could go out there if you don't use them often.

Dishwasher would be almost the last thing I'd move into the utility!

bakingdemon · 21/02/2018 12:37

We have washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility room but I wouldn't dream of putting the dishwasher there. Much easier to have it close to where you're going to put things away.

irregularegular · 21/02/2018 12:38

Sounds like a complete pain to me, sorry. I want the dishwasher right there where I am cooking and serving food so I can put dishes straight in as they get dirty, and get them out when I want them.

I also wouldn't like the idea of plates being near dirty laundry, muddy boots etc. I like having separate sinks for soaking saucepans and stained underwear!

irregularegular · 21/02/2018 12:42

I consider a utility sink to be pretty essential. And if you don't have your washing machine in there, then is it even a utility room??? We don't actually have a bin there, but it is where we keep our recycling. Bin isn't far away so not a big deal. We also have a small second fridge (for drinks mainly, and useful when having parties, Xmas etc.). Useful but not essential. We replaced our separate washer and drier with a combined machine to make space for the second fridge.

FinallyHere · 21/02/2018 12:50

If you installed two dish washers side by side, you could keep the clean dishes in one and transfer them to the other once dirty.

Save cupboard space and the effort of emptying the dishwasher into cupboards

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 21/02/2018 12:55

I’ve got the dishwasher in the utility. All the toing and froing helps enormously with the Fitbit Grin. Also helps me to mitigate my utter bone idleness in not washing them up myself.

GlitterBurps · 21/02/2018 13:01

We recently made a utility room during a kitchen refit and put the washer and dryer in there and a stainless steel sink for dirty stuff. For me it wouldn’t be practical having a dishwasher in there as it would be too far to walk back and forth to put stuff away.

Fieau · 21/02/2018 13:05

Our dish washer is in the utility room
....im surprised at all the people talking about a big walk back and forth - your houses must be bigger than mine because apart from the fact it's technically in a separate room it is only about three steps away from the cupboard where we keep the plates.
We have the dishwasher, tumble dryer and washing machine all in the utility room and it's great because when they are running I can shut the door and it stops the noise coming through the house!

eljay2 · 21/02/2018 13:17

The house I just moved in to has dishwasher in utility. It is incredibly annoying. Don't do it!!!!

Rather than just throwing stuff in the dishwasher throughout the day as I use it, I end up having to pile stuff on a tray next to the kitchen sink then precariously carry a heavy tray through a narrow doorway to load in the evening.

Last house I just unloaded out of the dishwasher straight to the cpd. This house unloading involves a two-step process of unloading clean stuff on to a tray then carrying it through, putting the tray down and lifting stuff into the cpd. Takes forever.

Also the dishwasher is right next to the washing machine and I hate the proximity of clean washing and raw meat dirty dishes on the worksurface above or v.v. dirty washing and clean dishes.

Utility sink is nice to have if you have space.

BackforGood · 21/02/2018 13:26

I wouldn't. When we moved into our house, it had the dishwasher at the other end of the kitchen. Couldn't believe how inconvenient it was until we lived with it - didn't realise when we were looking round.
You need your dishwasher in a small triangle with your sink, hob, and kitchen bin (for crumbs / scrapings), and close to where you keep all your crocks, pans, and cutlery for emptying.

A sink in the utility is very useful. I like the fact that football boots, etc aren't washed in my kitchen (or bathroom - yes, I'm looking at you ds Angry) sink.

Joinourclub · 21/02/2018 13:44

We've just moved our dishwasher in to the kitchen from the utility. So much better.

dandeloin · 21/02/2018 14:28

Thanks for all of the tips. Our washing machine & tumble direr will be staying put in the utility room, and I do think there will be merit to having a sink out there but I'm now leaning towards keeping the dishwasher in the kitchen, close to the kitchen sink, the relevant cupboards etc - seems like way to much faffing around to carrying dirty ware form one room out to another.

A second sink is useful but a dishwasher is very odd. It would really put me off if I was viewing a house.

MrsDilber · 21/02/2018 14:33

That sounds like a pain to me. Washing machine and tumble dryer yes, but lugging all your crockery in and out of the kitchen every day, I think you'd regret it.

Mines just to the right of my main sink and I couldn't imagine it anywhere else.

FinallyHere · 21/02/2018 15:36

As for washing machine in the kitchen, who takes their clothes off there?

We moved the washing machine to the bathroom, its bliss. No carrying laundry up and down the stairs.

namechange2222 · 21/02/2018 16:32

No to dishwasher in Utility
Yes to huge sink in Utility

Bekabeech · 21/02/2018 17:01

I'd say have the dishwasher as close as possible to where the plates and cutlery are stored. So if that is the Utility room then fine, but I love being able to unpack cutlery straight into the draw without moving, and only about one step to put the plates away.

marmite157 · 24/02/2018 03:41

I have my dishwasher in my utility and I love it!

I get there is a little toing and froing but....

As soon as the dishwasher is on surely it's not only me who finds / creates / uncovers a bunch of dirty bits that need to go in the dishwasher? If your dishwasher is in your kitchen where do they go? In the sink? Take up worktop space? For me it's actually much tidier and convenient to put them on the worktop above the dishwasher in the utility (separated by the sink and drainer from the clean washing)

And like a PP said tidy kitchen in a flash Smile
