Would you rather sleep on a sofa bed or Aerobed?

I have one small spare room that’s currently taken up by a queen-sized bed. I want to reclaim the room as an office. Problem is, I still have overnight guests fairly often.

Is a sofa bed or one of those pricey airbeds a better solution? Which would you rather sleep on?? Any advice much appreciated.

Aerobed. But not one of those raised ones because that is like sleeping on a bouncy castle. I was given an aerobed and it was soooo comfortable. It also lasted a very very long time, and never needed reinflating even when slept on for a while. Eventually it did get a puncture so I replaced it, but it was nowhere near as good. I don’t know if they are no longer as good or if it was just a cheaper model, but I would say get the most expensive one. All sofa beds are uncomfortable.

Sofabed for me, every time. Especially a good quality one. I don't want to clamber up off a mattress on the floor.

bushtailadventures · 15/02/2018 04:43

How about a daybed? Good as an occasional sofa, but with a proper mattress for when you have guests. We have one with a trundle bed underneath, makes a good size double when put up on it's legs.

EssentialHummus · 15/02/2018 04:48

Sofabed, by far.

Notinmybackyard · 15/02/2018 04:50

Sofa bed but a good one, not the cheaper foam type

HuskyMcClusky · 15/02/2018 05:20

Daybed with a trundle is a height, I suppose. Not sure of the advantages over a sofa bed, though?

Have got 70-year-old parents staying quite often, so need to sleep two, and nothing too hard to get up out of.

lolita, I thought the raised ones were supppsed to be better?! Aargh. Confused!

I slept on a posh airbed (plugs into the wall to inflate and auto tops up in the night if need be) at a friend’s house and it was the best nights sleep I’ve had for ages. It was quite high once inflated and so comfortable.

BikeRunSki · 15/02/2018 05:31

Decent sofa bed.

ChangingStates · 15/02/2018 05:34

Decent sofa bed every time, if you want 2 to sleep on it though it needs to be a 3 seater sofa so the bed is a proper double

Ginandplatonic · 15/02/2018 05:37

Sofa bed but it needs to be a good quality one with inner spring mattress. Air bed makes me feel vaguely seasick.

Onemorecornetto · 15/02/2018 05:37

It’s hard to find a decent sofa bed. Ours is m&s and not great. Most of our guests have preferred the aerobed (high up one)
IKEA hemnes day bed is very good-pulls out to bigger than a double.

LolitaLempicka · 15/02/2018 05:49

No. No. No. No. No. 😂 raised ones are ridiculous.
Although I don’t know why I didn’t think of the Hemnes daybed initially, it is what is in my spare room. I also think it would be better for older family members. However, I still bloody loved my aerobed.

LolitaLempicka · 15/02/2018 05:50

We even had the aerobed up on a frame briefly (I think that is what home stagers do when selling houses 🙄) But effective and very comfortable.

Joinourclub · 15/02/2018 05:57

A decent sofa bed. Especially if I was 70+.

HuskyMcClusky · 15/02/2018 06:26

Okay, is the daybed this one?

Tbh, I was hoping for more Aerobed love. Because then all the floor space would be free for the 95% of the time that the room is used as my office. (It’s a VERY small room 😰)

Spent nearly 3 years on an airbed, having a real mattress even if it was a shitty sofa bed one would have been lovely

ApacheEchidna · 15/02/2018 06:59

The most comfortable night I ever had in a guest room was with a friend who had a small sofa bed which I think she said was from John Lewis and the mattress was semi- sprung and semi inflatable. It plugged in and inflated automatically and was amazingly comfortable.

are you sending out invitations op? Grin
whatever is best for you.

BikeRunSki · 15/02/2018 07:05

We have a sofa bed made by a bed manufacturer, Relyon. We got it fri. John Lewis 17 years ago, and its had pretty heavy use then. At one time, it was in nightly use fir about 3 months, then it had about 3 years of weekly, then nightly again when dd was tiny (b bad sleeper), avd is now more occasional. People still say it’s one of the most comfortable beds they’ve slept in. I agree.

Slartybartfast · 15/02/2018 07:13

or ask your parents what they would prefer

BerkInBag · 15/02/2018 07:16

Sofa bed. The Aerobeds I've had (expensive ones not schmutter) don't last long before they get a slow leak.

niceberg · 15/02/2018 08:02

I find most sofa beds fine if I'm sleeping on my own, but a nightmare of rolling into the centre and getting no sleep if I'm sharing with someone. So I second the idea of the day bed with trundle. You get two separate decent mattresses so a good sleep for both people.

My experience of airbeds (not Aerobed though - is that a specific type?) is that they can feel really cold whenever you turn over. It even wakes me up. But then I'm crap at sleeping. Partially helped by putting a duvet under the bed sheet.

We're about to buy an Ikea Hemnes for our very small study/guest room. We're going for that over a sofabed because it can be used as a single
without having to pull it out every time, something that will work particularly well for us.

However - if you have the budget, these are AMAZING!
