Alternatives to grey!

Arghhh please help, I have issues with grey!

Currently trying to plan a scheme of redecoration for my new Home (master bedroom, bathroom, hall/stairs and living room) and I feel like every room would look great in grey!! It's a 2 bed terrace so the above rooms would mean effectively the entire house was a shade of grey. Would this be okay?!

What are my other neutral but stylish alternatives?

Pale green?

lifechangesforeverinjuly · 27/01/2018 21:09

Pretty much my whole house is grey Grin including the soon-to-be nursery!

I do have a page green kitchen and hallway but that's as different as it gets. I think grey goes with anything and you can accent it with different colours - for example, my bathroom is grey and yellow.

hazeydays14 · 27/01/2018 21:11

Following with interest as I am in the same boat... I want all grey everywhere Grin

Chocolateyescakeyes · 27/01/2018 21:12

I recently decorated my sitting room grey - and I love it! My living room is a sort of a mushroom colour which I also really love, It's not too dissimilar to Dulux 'Almost Oyster'. So it's a lovely warm feel without being too yellow.

dancingqueen345 · 28/01/2018 08:26

Haha glad I'm not on my own (and this thread hasn't been hijaceked by the 'grey is outdated' brigade!).

I'm thinking maybe I keep the halls/stairs neutral then, and go shades of grey crazy in the rooms!

I've used pale blue greys in my house as well as duck egg blue to stop it from being too grey throughout.

Mara17 · 28/01/2018 16:56

I love grey too, always have. How about doing some slightly colored greys? Blue-grey, or even a grey with a slightly purple tint. There are some beautiful green-greys out there, and I do like pale green as well.

In the hallway you could do a warmer grey.

You can also vary the shades and amounts of grey in each room. Maybe one has a feature wall with a darker grey and another room is all a very pale shade of grey. One room could have bright accents while another has more muted aceents, or even a lot of white to it.

We are having the same discussions at the moment! I thought we were set on F&B Ammonite in our front room / kitchen and Cornforth White in our hallway with Strong White on the woodwork.

However, DH was stripping a window at the weekend to reveal the original colour of the woodwork, which was closest to Old White on the F&B colour chart and we've just tried a sample pot and it looks lovely. It does mean a more traditional colour scheme and I was sure I wanted something more modern but it's a lovely relaxing slightly green white.

I'm still not sure though.

puffylovett · 29/01/2018 17:08

Having had grey for a few years (and loving it!) I'm worn out of it now. With the exception of ds2s bedroom which is half f&b downpipe, which I adore. I've recently redecorated and have opted for pale blue greys - blackened and skylight. They're definitely colder, fresher colours

Need2morehands · 29/01/2018 17:15

Iv gone for creams/golds/rose golds in the living room. White sparkly stripes in hall stairs landing and grey in my room.

WittgensteinsBunny · 29/01/2018 17:35

Ooh we were going to do our old bathroom
Blackened but didn’t get round to it. What’s it like and where have you used it?

Ketzele · 29/01/2018 20:26

I think grey is neutral and classic, and yes can be used everywhere - though I don't like that very cold look with lots of silvery grey accompanied by yet more silvery grey, and chrome, and mirrored furniture. I have different greys throughout my house but also lots of warm autumnal colours.

Mostly I go for warmer or greeny greys, but I do have Blackened in my bedroom. It looks great with dusky pink.

puffylovett · 30/01/2018 12:53

I have blackened in my northwest facing kitchen, with Hague blue on the (shitty self painted) units. I've also taken all the upper cupboards off the wall in favour of a s,all amount of open shelving, so it feels really fresh and light and open in there now. Which, for a galley kitchen, is pretty good I reckon!

trixymalixy · 30/01/2018 13:50

peignoir by farrow and ball.

Snowglobes · 18/10/2018 12:22

@trixymalixy do you have photos of your peignoir please?

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 18/10/2018 12:29

I like grey and think it's classic but beware of too much grey! I've seen a few houses on rightmost that are ALL grey, as in: grey paint, grey carpet, grey kitchen, grey flooring, grey furniture, grey curtains.... It's a lovely colour to let other aspects of your house stand out such as a warm oak floor or a nice contrasting colour such as navy blue or yellow.

TimesNewRoman · 18/10/2018 12:36

Other neutral but stylish alternatives:

Dulux Egyptian Cotton
Dulux Just walnut
Farrow and Ball Skimming stone
Crown Dash of Nutmeg
Crown Snowfall

These are all more browny greys.

adaisy1394 · 18/10/2018 12:44

We have just done our 2 bed terrace in a combo of the following;

  • Timeless (dulux) & Stiffkey Blue (F&B) in bedroom
  • Denim Drift (dulux) in bedroom 2 (home office)
  • Moonshot (Valspar) in bathroom - this is a lovely "greige" which is very calming and lovely
  • Timeless in Dining room
  • White cotton (Dulux) in kitchen with a storybook sunset (Valspar) kickboard and Lampas Peacock tiled backsplash (topps tiles)
  • Timeless in living room too with sage green alcoves by Valspar - the name escapes me!

I think Valspar has been my fave to paint with, their V700 blend is great and very matt. As long as you pick from their millions of pre selected colours its a perfect match but trying to dupe F&B is not really successful IMO.

Dulux is nice to paint with and good coverage (I used only matt)

I love love love the effect of my F&B stiffkey blue wall (with my burnt orange headboard in front) but it was sadly horrible to paint with and needed 3 coats on top of a grey primer, using a whole large tin on only 1 wall so I wont rush to use F&B again although the finish does feel more durable than the other matt finishes I have from the other paints

itsjustmebeingme · 18/10/2018 12:50

Pretty much any colour in a paper tone. Depends on current furniture, dressing etc you may already have. Go wild!
We have no white or grey as a standard throughout, just a couple of very dark grey accent walls...all the rest are either blue, green, mustard

Snowglobes · 18/10/2018 13:28

@itsjustmebeingme your colour schemes sound fabulous! Would you mind posting photos please?

butcherswife · 19/10/2018 10:26

I think Grey is such a classic colour. My house is also mostly grey/muted colours, although I have added some dark blue to the living room and i try to add warmth with patterns, and throws etc. Obviously some obligatory pics of the grey house Grin

Living room is Chic Shadow
Master bedroom is Dusted Cappuccino
Spare bedroom is F&B Elephants Breath
Bathroom is also tiled top to bottom with big grey floor tiles Smile

bobkate · 20/10/2018 09:19

Snowglobes...our bedroom has just been done in peignoir and stiffkey. I like it! Our hallway is pavilion grey, strong white in loft. Dd one is having borrowed light, dd2 is having pale powder.

Grey is so over done these days.
Honestly it is the new magnolia.
I help my sister who has her own estate agency with property details and photos sometimes,
And every house from £100000 to 1 million is styled in grey.
Trust me it is so over done .
I was going for a grey kitchen but now decided against.
It may look stylish but in other lights it looks cold and dull.
Had quite a few buyers comment on it too....
'Oh no another grey kitchen/lounge/bedroom ' etc

butcherswife · 22/10/2018 08:39

Hi @snowglobes it's Valspar Lone Splendor - I had it made up at B&Q
