Under mount sink

We are having a Wickes Tiverton bone kitchen with the island in Tiverton slate. We will be having Unistone Carrara Blanco quartz worktops. My final decision is the sink - we know we want an under mount but cannot decide on white ceramic or stainless steel. Thoughts?

We have a white ceramic under mount sink. It's a pain in the ass. Wish I'd insisted on stainless steel but DH really wanted it.

Ceramic every time over ss. Can you not get a built in sink in the quartz rather than undermounted?

Mosaic123 · 13/01/2018 23:39

Stainless steel. Easy to look after. Hardly shows as it's undermined anyway.

Mosaic123 · 13/01/2018 23:40

Undermounted!

Sunny41 · 14/01/2018 10:29

I’ve not heard of a sink being built in quartz but it sounds expensive.

So 2 votes for stainless steel, 1 for ceramic. Any more?

Ceramic looks better, as functions better.

Our ceramic one is awful to use. I have broken more crockery since having it than the sink is worth! Anything that slips out of soapy hands breaks. With my old stainless, it seemed to bounce!

mumpoints · 14/01/2018 10:35

That should be “SS functions better”.

mumpoints · 14/01/2018 10:36

What are your colours? I saw a stainless sink in a blue tint, can’t remember where, it was gorgeous,

Sunny41 · 14/01/2018 10:46

Off white main cabinets, grey island cabinets, white marble quartz worktop.

And does the ceramic get scratched or chipped?

OP posts:

So SS will look fine with those colours anyway then.

mumpoints · 14/01/2018 10:51

Ours has crazed a bit around the plug. It always looks messy though. It is very flat bottomed and puddles stay in it. And if you pour a cup of half finished coffee down the plug, it has to be cleaned. A quick rinse doesn’t do it.

Sunny41 · 14/01/2018 10:55

Thank you. I do prefer the look of ceramic but think we will be safer with ss.

If you search for coloured stainless steel sinks, this company comes up www.reginox.co.uk/sinks/colored-sinks they look fab!

Can’t find the blue one I saw, but they have a pearly one which looks like ceramic colour. Best of both worlds I’d say.

jigster01 · 14/01/2018 10:58

Your kitchen sounds like ours ! Bianco Carrara unistone, porcelain units, charcoal island ( though looks deep navy blue) and .........ss blanco undermount sink ....you will not be disappointed ..the quartz is superb and very beautiful-very busy 5 man house here and every 'stain' has wiped easy away

mumpoints · 14/01/2018 10:59

Don’t know if they have undermounted though...

brizzledrizzle · 14/01/2018 10:59

Ceramic with a bowl for washing up.

We have a large ceramic sink, it's great for washing cats in.

Sunny41 · 14/01/2018 11:00

That looks interesting. Thanks.

I think ceramic looks nicer but not so practical as SS. These undermount sinks, do they not ache your backs?

KiaOraAura · 14/01/2018 11:01

We've got a ceramic sink, had it about 7 years now (although its inset rather than undermounted. No chips, looks as good as new and we've never broken anything on it.

jigster01 · 14/01/2018 11:06

Just to add a friend has white ceramic sink over granite and she said she wishes she had ss..I think because of scratching . If you do get ss I would recommend you buy a clear plastic mat for the base to avoid marks, scratching from cutlery etc ..we have a 1.5 bowl and again would recommend if you have space to get a sink that will be large enough to put your full width oven trays in ...great decision

Sunny41 · 14/01/2018 11:12

It has to go over 600mm cupboard and we don’t think we can manage without 1.5 bowl. It’s the divider in the middle that I’m worried about banging stuff on with a ceramic one.

We had a ceramic sink in our old house. It was great. No scratches or chips. Now we’ve got a stainless steel one and it’s covered in scratches.

Sunny41 · 14/01/2018 11:27

Jigster01 can I ask what handles you have on your cupboards and drawers please?
