What would you put on wall?

This is the plan for our kitchen. The island is not to scale so don't think it's going to be quite as imposing 😂😂 what would you put on the wall top left? Would you tile it or just leave it painted?

buckeejit that sounds like a great idea what you are doing. Unfortunately we have a utility room/porch through that door which is going to have the washing machine and dryer in it so need access to that.

I might ask about moving the hob as it's an induction hob so doesn't need gas. And put sink where hob is on my drawing? Then that leaves a pretty big island with not much on it mind you.

It's a nightmare and I'm a very indecisive person lol. Wish someone would do it all for me and make the decisions too Grin

Have 3 low pendant lights over the breakfast bar area. That will fill up the expanse of space.

hilbil21 · 16/05/2017 09:33

Above the island?

We couldn't really afford tiles at the time and it was too much to think about with all the other decisions to make so used washable bathroom paint, it worked really well, our sink and hob are on that wall and five years later its never 'needed' tiling, though we will at some point, I suppose if we can agree on tiles.

Moving hob sounds a great idea.

We've got a peninsula 90cm by 180cm with nothing on it. It has three pendant lights above. I use it for entertaining with nibbles or drinks on it, or tea coffee and biccies. If it's not in use for that I put a fruit bowl on it or even a vase with flowers. I love it and it's what everyone compliments in the kitchen. It has the stone counter top going down over the short edge, and three seats and an overhang with shallow cupboards on the far side, the dishwasher is on the opposite side to the seats with some other cupboards.

I've attached a pic!

Your kitchen is lovely!! Think our island is going to be 2.5 metres by 1.4 metres so it's a lot of room to fill if only a sink on it. We shall see. We have gone for a similar colour of units with a white quartz worktop. I'm terrible at picturing how it will all look

Yes pendant lights above the island in the seating area like heateallthecakes photo. It will break up the space plus nice mood lighting in the evening.

hilbil21 · 16/05/2017 15:14

Yep the plan is to have pendant light above island. I just can't wait till it's all done!

I would run floor to ceiling larder units all the way along the back wall with ovens/microwave etc then put the sink and hob on the same side of the island (the side where hob is on the plan) so they are both facing the rest of the room. My hob is in an island set to one side. It has around 500mm of worktop space to the right then the rest of the island to the left which is around 1500mm.

hilbil21 · 16/05/2017 16:42

I would have loved to have done that in a perfect world but according to the kitchen place island is not going to be long enough to have them both. It's going to be 2.5 metres. Think it would needed to have been 3 metres to do that safely?

Hmm I see what you mean. Could your go for a narrower sink? In theory if you have 400mm Ar each side of the island then assuming the hon is 600m that would leave 900mm. A sink/600mm would leave the minimum of 300mm which is the least you can leave between a socket and water I believe. If you have a dishwater then the sink will only be used for washing veg etc? You could also reduce down the space either side of the sink and hob so they sit closer to the ends of the island? Kitchen planning is a minefield Confused

user1488756360 · 16/05/2017 17:06

I've taken this picture from TripAdvisor of a place we've stayed before where the kitchen was basically just an island. The hob was to the right with a space in the middle then a tiny sink on the end and the dishwasher underneath just to the right.

hilbil21 · 16/05/2017 17:31

That could be a very good idea. Kitchen fitter/joiner person we are using is coming down tomorrow evening so will speak to him about it then thank you

OP posts:
hilbil21 · 17/05/2017 20:36

Well the joiner was round tonight and we've decided to swing the island round so that the sink is opposite the ovens/units and when standing at the hob will be standing fairly close to ovens with back to bat window. And that is my final decision I can't cope with any more GrinGrin

*bay

Bluntness100 · 17/05/2017 20:42

Don't put your sink on the island. The reality of that is if you wish to use the island as anything but workspace folks are sitting eating next to dirty dishes and stuff in the sink.

If you need to put the hob there fine, but don't put the sink there, you really will seriously regret it.

hilbil21 · 17/05/2017 20:43

We have a dining table that eating is going to be done at as we have a 2 year old. Seating at island is going to be more for socialising etc. Plus we have a dishwasher

@justdontevenfuckingstart Do you think the new plan is a bit better?

OP posts:
cheesypastatonight · 19/05/2017 12:53

I think the whole thing looks odd. Sink and job far too close, surprised it's allowed

hilbil21 · 19/05/2017 14:01

It's all changed now anyway. Grin

OP posts:
justdontevenfuckingstart · 19/05/2017 19:12

LOL kitchens are a bloody nightmare, what are you doing now hil?

Bluntness100 · 19/05/2017 19:17

Seating at island is going to be more for socialising etc

That's the point though no one wishes to socialise next to a sink. Pull a chair up to yours and give it a shot....it's not good.😂.

hilbil21 · 19/05/2017 19:22

This .... with the island long ways. Sink opposite to ovens. Seating is at other end and hob opposite bay window still.

Makes more sense to do that.
