Are feature walls naff?

I have decided to decorate my bedroom & I was just wondering if I was 5 years too late to have a wallpaper feature wall behind my bed?

Yes they are always naff. I remember my first terraced house I bought in the late 1970s which had one wall wallpapered and the rest emulsioned in the main bedroom. To add insult to injury they had created little bed-side tables attached to the wall (made of plywood) and these were wallpapered in the same wallpaper - hideous.

I think you should have what you like and not worry about it tbh. Though I have always thought they're naff but I'm old and unfashionable so that probably means they're v v trendy
I've just painted several rooms and after the Christmas decs come down I'm going to look at wall sized stencils as when I get bored I can just repaint the wall and start again without the faff of stripping paper.

We've got a feature wall in our bedroom behind the bed and we love it!

I'm planning on having one wallpapered wall in my bedroom. Main reason is that I almost lost the will to live removing 3 walls of textured wallpaper and decided I'd leave the last one and paper over it instead

You're 15 years too late.

I always find them a bit odd and unthought out. If you want colour use soft furnishings which are much easier to change if you go off a colour scheme.

Oh god no not a feature wall. Naff naff naff. Definitely 15 years too late. Saying that I have seen one or two that are effective but that is only because the houses they're in are beyond beautiful proper 'magazine' houses and could probably pull anything off regardless of how awful it would look most places.

It depends how it's done, if it's done tastefully and in muted colours that tone in with the rest of the room it can look lovely and add interest. If it's done in some eye watering wall paper that stands out like a sore thumb, then not so much.

So the question isn't really about feature walls as such, it's more about an overall colour scheme in a room and what colours tone and flow.

I was thinking Laura Ashley Wisteria in duck egg against the back wall, cream on the other 3 & plain duck egg Roman blind. The blind would be really big at 2m 64cm so a feature in itself. Would prefer curtains but they would cover the radiator & cant move it. Room is 4m x 4m so pretty big. The room is currently pale blue with blue/grey patterned blind.

Maybe plain walls with a colourful blind. I'm just bored with the bedroom although nothing much wrong with it really.

When it comes to decorating seriously who cares what's 'in' or stylish or any other bollocks? Its you that lives there.

Not only do I do feature walls, I have full wall murals. I bloody love my taste.

Have what you want honestly, magazine looking houses are so sheeple with no personality.

I think that would be lovely, as the wisteria wall paper has a lot of cream in it, so would definitely flow. I'd maybe try to colour match the blind or go for cream.

If it's a bedroom then add plain white bedding.

Who cares? If you like it, have it.

Sounds a little bit like my bedroom. We have just re wallpapered in the same paper as before from Laura Ashley. I find it calming in colour. Not too fussy in my opinion but we are all different. Choose what you like. I wouldn't worry.

It entirely depends on how you decorate it. If you choose a gorgeous wallpaper then it can look lovely. In general I'd go for wallpaper on all walls but sometimes that doesn't work. In my kitchen only one wall (and all of the insides of the glass wall units) are papered.

There's nothing wrong with feature walls. Do what ever you like, it's your sanctuary.

I think it's naff when it's a really bold, eye-catching feature wall, but looks fine when it's just a subtle colour difference or subtle wallpaper.

Have a look through Pinterest and home decor magazines for home decor ideas to jazz up a room without necessarily adding the notorious feature wall...?

Depends what you like.

We have a Surface View wall (can't post a pic without outing myself) and I love it, as do visitors. Go with your own style and don't worry about what's fashionable.

My personal opinion is that if you like it, go for it. Unless you are a sheep, happy to be dictated to by some mysterious being who decides whether things are In or Out.

(And no, I don't have a feature wall so I'm not defending my own choice!)

I'd imagine a lot of people have feature walls, either with paint or paper- if you look in a diy shop/b&q there's so many papers and thousands of colours of paint- there's no way people are only doing the whole room in those papers or vibrant colours. I've done my chimney breast wall in a dark grey with cream everywhere else and duck egg blue and copper accents and it looks beautiful.
