Tell me about your POSH cutlery?

I want posh cutlery. I'm fed up with our dull cutlery, I think the last one was Viners from John Lewis. I've decided why wait until we go out, to eat with posh cutlery? I hate the ones that come in different colours to match your kitchen assessor insect, can't stand light cutlery, and don't like p,win thin necked cutlery.

Features I'm looking for include:

Stainless steel
Must have a pattern or design on the handles (but none of those coloured ones)
Heavy cutlery, no lightweight forks etc
At least 24 piece
Stays shiny, is that possible?

I've searched Amazon and eBay but not coming up with much. Villeroy and Boch are all dreadfully plain so also is Vines. I've checked Argos and JL all frightfully dull.

Please what do people use? Is there a best brand type that's known for its durability?. Budget is about £60-80. I'm dreaming aren't I?

Tricky. How would you feel about looking in an antique market for "vintage"? Or is that not your style?

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 18:48

My spellchecker seems to have gone bonkers, apologies.

I don't mind vintage at all so long as it matches my requirements for a really beautiful set I'd be willing to even push up my budget, a little bit. So if you know of any please link here.

I've been looking at vintage and new for a couple of years not found anything under £200 I like so we keep shelving it.

MythologicalPersonage · 02/04/2016 19:00

WMF is worth a look. I have one of their teaspoons that came with an egg cup set and that has stood up to continuous use over a few years. The link below is worth checking out although I think you need to hold cutlery and see how the weight is distributed before buying.

I think I would go for a brushed cutlery set next time I need to buy one as it can stand up to heavy use more.

SpaceKablooie · 02/04/2016 19:06

We have Robert Welsh (Welch?) cutlery. It's really nice, and you could add to it over time as you can buy things individually.

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 19:08

Lighten - oh dear! Looks like my taste might be above my budget in that case.

Myth - I've never heard of brushed cutlery, so might try that as well. I'll just check your link.

Please keep the comments coming!

Alessi do really nice cutlery sets as well

CantStickCabbage · 02/04/2016 19:10

Robert Welch do some lovely cutlery, although I'm not sure about the staying shiny. A 24 piece set seems to be about £100 - what size of set were you wanting?

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 19:11

Is contemporary cutlery meant to be light and vintage heavy? Does anyone know? All the ones I've seen seem to be as light as a feather. I really like feeling my
Cutlery. What do you all use when you have guests to dinner?

CantStickCabbage · 02/04/2016 19:11

Cross post with Space! And I see you did say at least 24 pieces.

trixymalixy · 02/04/2016 19:11

My posh cutlery is by Arne Jacobsen for Georg Jensen.

David mellor cutlery is also nice. Not sure if too £££ though.

Coldtoeswarmheart · 02/04/2016 19:12

We have Arthur Price Bead cutlery and I love it. We use it every day. Not cheap but I see it discounted at outlet-type stores sometimes.

Jaimx86 · 02/04/2016 19:14

Was going to start a similar thread on wine glasses. Will wait and see how much I spend on cutlery first :o

Ricksheadtilt · 02/04/2016 19:15

We had an Arthur Price set for our engagement present off pil. It certainly ticks the shiny & remaining so ... Ours isn't patterned, but the handles aren't a standard shape iyswim. Ours could possibly be a little lightweight for you (but I find the "balance" really good on them). I imagine they have a huge range to choose from though. Debenhams stick Arthur Price.

MythologicalPersonage · 02/04/2016 19:17

Viners Studio is an interesting retro design although I think they have reissued it so I don't know if you can be sure that you are buying the original version.

FinallyHere · 02/04/2016 19:29

Another vote for Robert Welsh here, just love their designs. Very clean lines. Lovely.

MadisonMontgomery · 02/04/2016 19:29

I have Arthur Price in the Dubarry pattern - it's a really nice weight. Mine is silver but I assume the stainless steel is similar quality.

SpaceKablooie · 02/04/2016 19:31

Yes, my Robert Welsh cutlery has stayed shiny, and is pleasingly heavy Smile.

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 19:33

I'm reading all your comments! Just googling the various design names as they're coming in.

Ive stumbled across a site bryandouglas.co.uk antique silver, my oh my! But doubt I could afford it.

Tk maxx is well worth a look. We have got an couple of sets from there for less than your budget (one 6 and one 8 person) in total. Obviously it is a bit of a labour of love and chance.

BennyTheBall · 02/04/2016 19:37

Our nice cutlery (for dinner parties) is Arthur Price. I love the weight of it. We don't put it in the dishwasher, so it's kept for large dinners.

We also have an everyday set by Robert Welch.

I like plain, clean lines - no patterns or engraving.

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 20:08

I was hoping the Arthur Price ones would be what I'm looking for but alas! They're very slim and plain, no engravings..., I want engravings, and they need to feel substantial if that makes any sense.

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 20:09

Yes TkMaxx can be very hit and miss, but I'll pop into my local.

I've seen one I like

Arthur Price but alas its silver plated, not stainless steel!
