Tell me about your POSH cutlery?

I want posh cutlery. I'm fed up with our dull cutlery, I think the last one was Viners from John Lewis. I've decided why wait until we go out, to eat with posh cutlery? I hate the ones that come in different colours to match your kitchen assessor insect, can't stand light cutlery, and don't like p,win thin necked cutlery.

Features I'm looking for include:

Stainless steel
Must have a pattern or design on the handles (but none of those coloured ones)
Heavy cutlery, no lightweight forks etc
At least 24 piece
Stays shiny, is that possible?

I've searched Amazon and eBay but not coming up with much. Villeroy and Boch are all dreadfully plain so also is Vines. I've checked Argos and JL all frightfully dull.

Please what do people use? Is there a best brand type that's known for its durability?. Budget is about £60-80. I'm dreaming aren't I?

This, blows the budget and isnt engraved but it what we have and I luffs it. It was a wedding present (because I am far too tight to buy it myself...) 5 years ago, been in constant use in the dishwasher and still perfect.

Some nice ones on the house of Fraser website...

LadyPenelope68 · 02/04/2016 20:36

We have the same set LottieDoubtie and I love it too!**

Coldtoeswarmheart · 02/04/2016 20:51

I'm sure I've seen Arthur Price Kings in stainless steel, OP.

MrsJoyless · 02/04/2016 20:57

We have Arthur Price stainless steel. I have recently bought more and discovered it is now heavier - apparently the knife handles are now solid whereas previously they were hollow. But which is perceived as "posher"?

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 21:41

Its looks like with all your help, i've finally found what i'm looking for and its called 'Arthur Price Kings in stainless steel' Grin, for the princely sum of £125 for 7 pieces Shock.

Shock that makes my set look reasonably priced. Sure you can't live without the fancy bits?

Coldtoeswarmheart · 02/04/2016 21:48

I have added to my Arthur Price Bead ss set cheap(er) from the Boundary Mill store in Walsall - like half price per item, that being the only reason I have those funny little cakes forks, and fish knives. Have you got one near you?

fitzbilly · 02/04/2016 21:51

I love laguiole cutlery, it is just the right weight and if you want plain they do a set that is not coloured.

I have a beautiful coloured set in mixes of paper greens and greys and I live it.

Their steak knives are brilliant too.

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 22:17

look what i found!

7 piece one

Am i missing something? Hmm

Can't see what it is! JL should price match that for you! Bargain!

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 22:32

I also love that Laguiole cultery. The set thats not coloured is just beautiful! but to be honest the coloured ones look very nice too, very unusual.

Our Arthur price stuff came from tk maxx. Topped up years later when very, who I've never shopped with, sent me a £30 voucher so I got another load more or less half price

Dotheskankyleg · 02/04/2016 22:34

I've noticed the JL one is silver plated. Its also just 7 pieces i.e a set for one person, but shouldn't that make it all the more cheaper? Selfridges one is stainless steel, 24piece set. I'm missing something, I'm convinced.

Coldtoeswarmheart · 02/04/2016 23:28

Stainless steel is a lot cheaper than silver plate, I guess?

wowfudge · 03/04/2016 07:12

The Selfridges one is 4 pieces per place setting in ss for 4 people. The JL is 7 pieces in silver plate and only one place setting.

bookishandblondish · 03/04/2016 14:59

It's worth waiting for the proper summer/ Xmas sales - JL often has really good deals on the first day of sale.

I think of good cutlery as being heavy - knives have a weight to them.

My taste is scandi - but I got a WMF set for 8 for about £200 in the summer sale of an indie kitchen shop.

David Mellor - I dream of but exhortionate.

Dotheskankyleg · 04/04/2016 08:47

Just wanted to say again, that I'm really delighted with the outcome of this thread and for all your contributions. I now know exactly what I'm looking for, I popped into JL yesterday and just straightaway asked for Arthur Price instead of trailing through loads of rubbish, picking up knives and judging their weight. I saw some Laguiole (mouth full),Robert Welch too, all names I had never heard of.

I'm taking bookish advise and waiting for the proper sales to make 2 purchases. Finally some decent cutlery. Smile

Have you looked on eBay? You can pick up whole canteens of vintage EPNS cutlery for very reasonable prices.

JT05 · 11/04/2016 07:30

We use inherited, 50 year old Arthur Price still in the original box! It has stood the test of time and sets can be picked up on E bay very reasonably.

Our every day is David Mellor, bought when he had a shop in Covent Garden, must be 30 yrs ago. It's still going strong but a little pitted from the dish washer.
