Can you get nice/funky net curtains?

So we have a house with a front garden of a few metres, but on a residential street between a main road and a park (victorian terraced house, London) so lots of people walk past it. It seems the thing for all the people moving into our quite cheap area and buying houses here to reinvent their new house with either shutters or frosted plastic sheets (whatever that is called?) stuck on but I like nets - I like being able to pull them back and see the street properly and the kids like peeping out of them etc. Any ideas or suggestions for nets that aren't old fashioned and look okay with modern furnishings etc?

I have a similar issue so I hope someone can recommend a good net curtain for me to twitch

Oh I'd like to know too!

We have these which are lovely and simply and unfussy - a very fine mesh voile which diffuses light really nicely, so doesn't darken a room or feel old fashioned.

I lie the look of these, though, if you have tall windows

I like the first of those ouryve. We do have tall windows and high ceilings but not convinced by the second. Do you have to wash them much?

I love those Lettice. Am so rubbish at being able to tell what they would look like on a bigger scale though

You have to cut ikea to size yourself though don't you?

The ones in he livingroom need completely replacing every few years, but that's because I have filthy kids who grab them with foody hands and chew on them while waiting for buses to drive past.

The non pasta saucy bits wash up nicely.

this is the most like mine I've seen, but mine are a much more open weave and diamonds rather than squares IYSWIM.

We went to Dunelm and got ours. They had a huge range.

Hope this link works. I quite like the humming bird ones.

Rivercam · 15/08/2015 00:55

Sorry birds, not hummingbirds.

wowfudge · 15/08/2015 18:35

I hate nets, but the Dunelm ones might convert me!

Can I ask, are those patterned voile curtains designed to be used like nets, for privacy, or are they just used as light 'regular' curtains? The pictures show them drawn back, which makes me wonder if that's how they're meant to be used.

amarmai · 28/08/2015 21:27

I love the reflective quality of shimmer voile. It keeps the room cooler, is hard to see thru fro the outside, but easy from the inside.

amazonqueen · 28/08/2015 21:38

I have light voile curtains drawn back like those in the advert.

Sometimes I draw them across the window as normal nets but I tend to have them loosely draped but held back at the sides- much like edwardian windows were.

I have roller blinds that I pull down when the lights go on in the evenings though. They might as well not be there at all for privacy sake when lights are on.

Devora · 28/08/2015 21:43

I rather like vintage lace curtains, rather than nets - they've got some nice ones here: www.theantiquescentreyork.co.uk/shop/antique-lace-panels-fabric/lace-curtain-panels/ivy-leaves-in-white-cotton-lace-curtain-panel88

You could also dye them.

Branleuse · 28/08/2015 21:46

i really want some of those lace ones with intricate pictures in them like you see in old peoples houses

I've used voiles in a swag style in my upstairs window which worked well.
