Stair carpet. Are you yawning yet?

Ok, this is truly riveting to me. What stair carpet or covering do you have, and how much did it cost? I have got dh's agreement to replace the stair carpet which was pretty worn 15 years ago when he bought the house as an ex-rental. Not sure how long it's going to take to save up for it. Anyone with a life, sorry about this thread.

I'm afraid I can't help as our stairs have been in a half-sanded limbo for the last four years, but keen to see answers, particularly if they relate to nice stripey runners.

How long are your stairs, meandjulio?

meandjulio · 10/01/2015 00:42

Single flight of 13 steps, enclosed, dark and narrow. Hmm, the stripy runner is also my dream underfoot, with lots of ?underlay

We recently replaced our stair and landing carpet. We chose an 80% wool stripy carpet in cream, brown and black. Its lovely! With the new underlay it was about £700 fitted.

Namehanger · 11/01/2015 13:24

Our lovely stripy carpet, two flights of stairs, one and a half landings. Cost about £1200 including underlay. We love it !!

meandjulio · 11/01/2015 13:56

Ooh (excited) £700 would take us a few months but maybe by next autumn Smile Thank you both.

Stripy runner my idea of heaven too. Where to look though? Local companies?

unlucky83 · 11/01/2015 21:00

Make sure you get a hard wearing one, absolutely definitely suitable for stairs... maybe ask in more than one shop

We have split stairs and I wanted a certain kind (can't remember what is called - neutral wool mix berber?) anyway it would have been the best part of £600 and the salesman assured me it was suitable/hard wearing etc ...thankfully I then noticed they had a roll end of the exact same carpet that with clever arranging would fit - it was only £300...and we went for that.
About 6 months later my parents (in another part of the country) were looking for a stair carpet and went to their local shop - which is also a carpet manufacture. He told them not to get the type I'd got - better to get one with tufts or something (?). Walking on tufts is better than walking on the side of the strand ???? Although mine is 'advertised' as suitable for stairs the style isn't very good...will soon looked worn, won't last long. I was a bit hmmm -but too late and it still looked ok...

Within 2 yrs it was looking worn, within 6 yrs it was worn down to the backing on the edge of the treads (even though the DCs don't wear shoes in the house) and a plain colour was also a mistake -looked grubby really quickly. Shop had gone otherwise I would have complained. If I'd paid what I was going to I would have been furious

It still is now as we are supposed to be moving to a house we are renovating so no point just now....but will need to get one for both new house and this one...am definitely going to go to the shop my parents go to for advice if nothing else before choosing carpets...
Tempted by stripes but think they might look dated soon - the equivalent of the bright coloured floral nos of the 70s...
And you need really good fitters to get it right...all the stripes lined up.

meandjulio · 11/01/2015 22:39

This is all so helpful, thank you. Yes I'm sure stripes will be absolutely dating in a few years but you're speaking to the woman who painted her hall bright orange and her sitting room bright green during the Changing Rooms years and then abandoned it like that for the poor sod who bought it to deal with so I am no stranger to falling for specific very dating looks. I LOVE STRIPES.

I like stripes too...that's what I'm probably going for too. Actually just remembered something I read about having extra length folded into front of bottom tread ? Or similar. You are then supposed to move it every so often to stop excessive wear on the edge of the treads... Seems complicated...but might be worth while on an expensive carpet .....except with stripes we might be quite relieved when its time for a new one Grin

shoopshoopsong · 12/01/2015 03:20

We just bought a new carpet for the stairs yesterday! We have wooden floors in the hall and landing so it's literally just the stairs being carpeted and it's costing £240 incl fitting and underlay etc.

IssyStark · 14/01/2015 16:53

unlucky that's a very useful tip which i will remember when we've finished painting the hall and are ready to do the carpet.

I also love stripes (currently have inherited with house red oriental pub-style wool carpet), which you can get as tufteed as well as berber. Recently also saw a grey herringbone style carpet on the web (sadly not tufted): uk.pinterest.com/pin/298082069061799774/

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 15/01/2015 23:11

Late to the party, but wanted to add my vote for the striped runner!

We were extremely fortunate at our last house to find the perfect sized piece of Roger Oates flat weave carpet on fleabay (for under £100 iirc) that was only supposed to be a temporary fix while we finished our restoration project, but in the end it looked so good we decided not to replace it and our buyers loved it too!

Have just bought similar but in a more neutral, less likely to date (hopefully!) colourway brand new from RO, but got a good deal in their sale (don't work for them, honest) which was great as we have way more stairs in this house......

We have two separate staircases as one was added when the house got extended in the '20s and as these are in different parts of the house (plus the newer one is far too narrow for a runner) we're only putting the RO on the original two flights. Cost for carpet only (not inc underlay, stair rods etc) for twenty two stairs was just under £900.....

ggirl · 15/01/2015 23:28

lovely

ggirl · 15/01/2015 23:30

brave but I love this

unlucky83 · 15/01/2015 23:39

issy do check with more than one shop! And my memory isn't perfect ...it might be more to do with the style of mine - the length of the sideways strands???? ...all I know for certain is they liked mine, were going to get similar and were advised against it - which proved to be right (their's still looks good now with 4 adults living there ...and they don't take their shoes off at the door!)

meandjulio · 17/01/2015 01:09

Love that first one ggirl. I'm glad I'm not the only one who dreams of a lovely stair carpet. If I posted a picture of my stairs - and I'm about as likely to do that as I am to streak in front of the Queen - you'd understand why.

We had our hall, stairs and landing done for £600ish about 18 months ago. As much as I love stripes we went instead for a mid brown with a white fleck to hide marks - I didn't want something that would really date the house in 5 years time. I do love the darker colour though the flecks show up track marks very quickly.

SandyChick · 20/01/2015 14:04

We have a Berber carpet on our stairs and landing. It's been down 6 years and has worn well. I think excluding underlay it cost maybe £250.

In my opinion it has worn better than our lounge carpet which has only been down 2 years. Can't remember what the lounge carpet is called but it was about £40 per m2 stain resistant super wearing one with the most expensive thick underlay too. It must have been at least double the cost of the stair carpet Hmm

mouses · 30/01/2015 15:07

im a fan of stripe carpet, I have large beige, grey and black stripe up stairs and on my mahoosive landing. cost £680 that's with a good pile carpet, underlay and fitter Smile

We wandered round our local independent carpet warehouse for an hour and chose Manx Ecostyle in the end. Its 90%PET 10% wool because we have had a carpet moth problem and even though we cleared it we are wary of going heavily to wool again.

Its made from recycled plastic bottles. I'll get a pic in a mo and show you my stairs.

JuniperTisane · 30/01/2015 15:32

We painted the bottom stair because one of our cats clawed the previous one to death. He doesn't touch the other stairs.

what happens at the top of the striped stair , is it carried on in the landing ?? in what direction??

Varya · 30/01/2015 17:23

Our stair carpet is called Moroccan Spice. It is washable and scrubable. A great asset in our dog-house.

JuniperTisane · 30/01/2015 17:43

Its carried on the same way, so the stripes go across the hall.

Pics not the greatest as the light is terrible and I have no flash but you get the gist.
