What can we turn an unused, unneeded study into?

The house we're hopefully moving into already has 2 studies downstairs, for myself and DH, so we have no use for the one on the 1st floor. We also already have enough bedrooms and a playroom, so we have no idea what to do with the room.

The room is 12x12 with a staircase in it leading to Bedroom 4 on the 2nd floor.

ah I would love my own room. Telly, xbox and big gaming chair hooked up to it with surround sound. That would be me set Grin

Dressing/laundry room with clothes/shoes/sports kit/linen storage, clothes airers, ironing board and storage for luggage.

BackforGood · 28/06/2014 22:39

Depends on the age of the dc, and their hobbies

Any spare rooms going I could use for

  • music room - so can prac instruments without winding up disturbing siblings
  • X-box room so can just chill out in there with his friends
  • camping equipment storage room (does what it says on the tin)
  • room I can leave stuff out in when I'm part way through a big job (like sorting out stuff, which you get part way through then have to leave and someone piles it up and ruins all the sorting you've done so far
  • a room I could do a jigsaw in and leave it out
  • a room I can air clothes in / store the pile of things I'm going to sew one day

DC are 5 and under.

DH wants to dedicate a wall to the family like a family tree and photos, like above ^^ which I love.

I think we may go for the library/sewing/artist room! :)

Your house sounds amazing!

Our house is fairly small but we have one little room that we call the studio and is meant to be for yoga, meditation, painting and sewing. Usually it's just full of cardboard boxes and extra toys though!

ChippyMinton · 29/06/2014 01:39

A giant store cupboard for stuff - luggage, linen, out of season clothes, bulky stuff like loo rolls, camping kit, sports kit, the hoover. And the ironing board, sewing machine, craft stuff, Christmas decorations etc. So the rest of the house could be clutter-free.

MultipleMama · 29/06/2014 02:27

I'm not keen using it as a storage room as we have plenty of space already. As Christmas stuff go in loft, camping gear goes in garage, we have closets/cupboards in bathroom/bedrooms/landing for those types of things. This room is on the 1st floor and things like the hoover will be in the ulility/laundry room on ground floor.

Sigh. I'm so bloody picky!

this

Didactylos · 29/06/2014 02:50

just for a few days...

saffronwblue · 29/06/2014 03:28

Have another baby!

kickassangel · 29/06/2014 05:05

library/quiet room - unless there will be lots of people standing in it yelling up & down stairs.

I'm thinking a wall of books, big comfy seats, a table big enough for jigsaw or sewing stuff.

Basically, what a lounge used to have in it before TVs

FishWithABicycle · 29/06/2014 06:33

I would choose to put some exercise equipment in there (plus a TV etc as I find exercise incredibly boring and need something to occupy my brain) so that I could spend half an hour a day getting some exercise without having to get out of the house

Did you say you haven't moved in yet?
If so why not wait and see how you find the space and decide once you have moved all your belongings in and if there is any stuff without a natural home.

MultipleMama · 29/06/2014 10:35

Haven't moved in yet but I just want to pass around a few ideas :)

Didactylos - now that's an idea I love! Grin.

go on - you can always change it to something else sensible later: but your kids will never forget it!

MultipleMama · 29/06/2014 17:09

I think DH would love it more than the DC.

Who is using the bedroom the stairs lead to?

MultipleMama · 29/06/2014 18:22

Build - We plan on giving it to one of our youngest twins who has sensory problems and very easily stressed/disturbed. It just made sense as it has an ensuite we could use for all his stuff and make at least some of his room like a sensory area.

We're still debating room arrangements but we don't want to make the study a bedroom as 3 of the DC are light sleepers and I don't fancy disturbing them by entering the room throughout the night.

Nothing is set in stone, so we're just tossing ideas for rooms and the spare room we will still have x

In that case I would go for the reading room/library as a relaxed space for anyone wanting a bit of piece.

I did something similar on the top floor landing but for the kids only as it is only their rooms up their. They have bean bags and a few shared toys. Just wish we had more shelves!

chunkythighs · 02/07/2014 02:14

Google multisensory rooms. We used them for children with sensory issues in a few places I worked in. Loved hanging out them too.

MultipleMama · 02/07/2014 03:11

The sale on the house fell through due to seller backing out so no library room! :(

I'd have a laundry room - hate walking up and down stairs with baskets of washing Smile

MultipleMama · 02/07/2014 21:15

I have a housekeeper who does the laundry so I don't have to take up piles and piles of clothes thank god haha.

Ah that's a shame, house sounds lovely.

Fwiw I would have made it into a library / study for the children, with computers and study areas for them to do their homework.
