should white gloss on woodwork always be avoided

my house is big and old. ( Georgian)
getting lots of decorating done.
skirtings, doors, picture rails, dados will be white .

is a satin gloss finish preferable to a standard gloss ?

We have gloss. Inherited it from the previous owner Given the choice I would go satinwood. Not so in your face I think.

We've got a big mid Victorian pile and i've used white gloss on woodwork It feels so much crisper & sharper but I think it depends on the decor as to whether or not it works. So far I've used it in a few rooms with brilliant white walls, with a pale cream hallway and a grey & red dining room.

Btw we had inherited satinwood which looks permanently grubby here.

I hate satin gloss finish, our house has it in some places and we are going to get it re-done in crisp white standard gloss.

We've got white gloss on all the woodwork. Classic and practical.

we have a big victorian house and used white gloss on all the woodwork apart from the doors, they were left natural looking. i like gloss on the woodwork as it makes it stand out which is what we like, bit like a frame around a picture - i think it frames the windows/doors etc.

White Gloss here, we did try satinwood in the dining room and it just looked unfinished. So proper white gloss all the way now.

I had no idea it was supposed to be avoided - can't think why you'd want anything else. It's bright (brings light into the room) durable and easy to clean and it looks great.

We have satinwood and it looks awful. I'm redecorating this pit in the spring and it'll be gloss all the way.

We've just redone our woodwork in Eggshell, still easy to clean but looks nicer and more modern imo

I also had no idea that white gloss was A Bad Thing.

However I am reconsidering glossing again - as the new formulations of gloss are 'greener' and go yellow more quickly than the older stuff. It is so annoying.

We did all our upstairs rooms and landing less than 2 years ago - and within a few months the woodwork had begun to 'yellow'.

May try the Satinwood and see if that stays white longer.

Our house is Edwardian and I really think for us it depends on which colours you are using it with and the overall effect you are aiming for.

Our dining room was decorated in quite dark and traditional colours, white gloss looked wrong and an off-white satin finish looked much better. When we redecorated we went for plain light cream walls to allow the dark wood furniture to stand out, white gloss now looks great.

princessalbert - I think its Dulux gloss which discolours, I used it on my door frames and skirting and its all gone a creamy colour now. I had to buy more to do the doors and bought Crown eggshell finish instead, this has stayed perfectly white.

princessalbert dulux had a problem with their white gloss for a while but im sure its sorted now. there seemed to be a batch of paint which did yellow, we had some of that and it did yellow but we have used their gloss since then and its been fine. we tried some crown paint but coverage was awful and we threw it out and went back to dulux.

Oh yes, I forgot that the Crown coverage was crap! I had to go over it a few times. Glad to hear that Dulux have sorted out the yellowing now, it is usually such good paint.

I dislike gloss. Shows all the imperfections up.. Much prefer eggshell or satin.

I prefer satinwood myself.

We have an old house and unless everything is very well sanded and I cant be arsed shiny gloss shows up every lump and bump.

Satin is much more forgiving.

And the brushes are easier to clean

I much prefer satinwood, I'm not keen on shiny things and gloss comes under that category for me.

We tried avoiding gloss but it does just look grubby several years down the line. I wondered if it was a fad that's reverting back to gloss again?

Eggshell is more matt than satin. Eggshell holds the dirt more and is harder to clean. If you and your family always wear clean cotton gloves and never leave hand marks or fingerprints this may not matter.

Prefer eggshell for look but gloss back in fashion again.
