I'm going to get the bannister painted white, had always assumed gloss but not sure now??

All my cars have had black rubber tyres. Surely it's very old fashioned and it would be more stylish to go for something new?

I have a similar thread below as we're decorating. Hadn't considered gloss but trying to choose between eggshell and satinwood. I like the look of eggshell more but am put off by people saying it holds dirt.

Eggshell everywhere here. Much prefer the matt look of it.

I find it cleans Ok tbh. Eggshell that is.

We've gone for satinwood. I like how it looks and there's really not much sheen to it at all.

I did have a house with all the woodwork painted in eggshell, and all the walls matt, about four years ago, when tarted up for sale, and wouldn't have it again.

dirty handprints especially on the doors; and difficult to get truly clean. You can rub a gloss door with a cloth to get handprints off.

The current trend is to have muted woodwork and chalky walls - looks fab when it's just been done but after a year it looks grubby and needs refreshing
White gloss lasts years and years - classic, clean and hard wearing.

We have glossed all the woodwork in our house. House was built in 1999. I do like it and it's hardwearing. Previous owner had repainted some of the doors matt on one side and gloss on the other (???) Anyway, looking at both sides of the door made our minds up for us... The matt did not look good on the doors IMO.

Only downside is when fluff / random stuff gets into the gloss Confused Be careful when painting!!

Re yellowing: oil based will yellow, water based/acrylic will not. This applies to gloss, eggshell and satinwood.

Personally I prefer eggshell. It's true that it does pick up the dirt more easily. On the other hand little dents don't show as much, due to there being less sheen (our Victorian doors have lots of bumps in).
