Ivory Shaker Kitchen but having a tile dilemma!

We have finally decided on our kitchen and are having mid-oak laminate worktops. So far , so good. However, I'm completely flummoxed about tiles!

We really want a classic look that won't appear overly dated in 10 years time. I think the metro tiles which are very popular at the moment may be out of favour soon similarly the checkerboard 4 or 5 colour country-look.

I like both of the above but am really unsure about what to go for. I don't want anything too contemporary or modern.

Any links to suggestions would be great! TIA Smile

Would white or cream tiles look 'odd' with an ivory kitchen?

what about natural stone? i would go for the country look. personally i love the metro tiles and am having thm ccurrently put in my bathroom.
my kitchen is ivory shaker too and have black granite worktop with matching upstands, so have no tiles at all. much prefer it that way

Have a look at Marlborough Tiles. I think they make tiles for Fired Earth, as its identical! ( the painted ones with bugs etc). They have really nice tiles, all made in Marlborough, the lady in the showroom is very helpful if tou give her a ring. Good luck!

We had ivory shaker and laminate worktops in our last kitchen. Had cream matt slightly textured rectangular tiles, not in brick pattern though. Looked lovely. Painted the walls to give colour.

first link show eg without tiles. 2nd link was a mess up but show shaker kitchens. the 3rd link tiles would look nice in your kitchen. what do you think?

mummaemma · 12/08/2013 08:39

this is my kitchen we finished last year.

doglover · 12/08/2013 15:58

I really like the 3rd link, ME. Many thanks for helping us out.

Love your kitchen, by the way!! Smile

something a bit different I was told about recently - saw photos and it looked fantastic - was a favourite wall paper ( the one I saw was houses ) with transparent glass over the top - instead of tiles ! it looked simply fantastic !!! :-)

DameFanny · 12/08/2013 20:58

Do you need tiles? We've none in our kitchen, just a wipeable paint, and no peeling or anything...

doglover · 12/08/2013 21:12

Other people (in RL) have mentioned about not having tiles but I'm not sure. Both my dh and I are very messy cooks and I simply can't imagine that wipeable paint would withstand our splatter!

I saw some possible tiles today in B and Q, of all places. Quite large and a matt stone effect. They sound revolting, I know, but they looked gorgeous. Definitely possible. Smile

We have what sounds very much like your kitchen with black, white and grey mosaic tiles and red kettle etc. looks great 5 years on.

Katiebeau · 14/08/2013 12:45

Check out Pimp Your Kitchen as an alternative to tiles. I want a new kitchen just to do this!

We've had metro tiles in two out of three houses over the past 10 years and I love it. I think a shaker kitchen isn't means to look 'in fashion' anyway.

doglover · 26/08/2013 18:03

I know what you mean, PL. A Shaker kitchen is never going to be high fashion - thanks goodness - so a classic look is definitely what we're aiming for.

I've gone off the afore-mentioned tiles and now prefer the B and Q 'Helena' tile.

Would I be completely reckless to estimate the quantity our fitter will need and buy them now? 20% off is too good to miss!

We had the 'then' version of those in our bathroom in the last house.

doglover · 26/08/2013 21:34

Do they look 'bathroom-y' in real life?

we have cream cupboards and brown worktops and our tiles are just a brown (can't describe the shade) square gloss ones. our worktops however are a glossy laminate stone effect rather than wood so might not work with the different surface/glossiness. my parents have cream cupboards and the same worktop as us but with a sort of pale lemon tile.

doglover · 26/08/2013 21:55

Thanks, PW. If our cabinet doors were cream, they would be a lot easier to accessorise! It's the ivory aspect that makes them more tricky to accommodate, I think.

hubby says our tiles are biscuit!

doglover · 26/08/2013 22:30

Biscuit?! Ooooo, get you!! Smile
