Thats it really, we are in the Somerset area for a few days and plan a day out. DH and I with 2 young children (2.5 and 5m)
Which would you recommend and why? Thanks

It's years since I've been to them and TBH I loved them both.

notnowbernard · 04/07/2010 20:08

I went to Wookey Hole in the Spring and thought it was extortionately priced rubbish

The caves are interesting but the rest is shite IMO

OrmRenewed · 04/07/2010 20:09

Personally I prefer Wookey but then I haven't been for years. You could try Ebor Gorge - just along from Cheddar - it's a few miles walk along a smaller gorge and it ends up at the top of a cliff with outstanding views. At it's free.

katkouta · 04/07/2010 20:14

I do prefer the cheaper options but dont mind if its worth seeing. How much are we talking notnowbernard?

I think they are both quite pricey, but in Cheddar you can buy cheese and cheese is the food of the gods.

notnowbernard · 04/07/2010 20:15

I'm sure it was about 50-odd for a family of 4

Maybe cheaper, but still massively overpriced

Don't think a 2yr old would enjoy the caves much, either

katkouta · 04/07/2010 20:16

Orm sounds good but not sure about the few miles walk with the little ones..we dont have a car either.

Years since I've been to either, but I much preferred Cheddar. WE used to go back most years, so much more to do on top of the caves. Found Wookey Hole quite tacky and we stuck to Cheddar after that. (I am talking 15+ years ago with my parents)

OrmRenewed · 04/07/2010 20:18

Blimey! It's gone up.

Ebor Gorge does need a car I'm afraid.

katkouta · 04/07/2010 20:19

Just looked at prices for wookey hole £13.50 adults and £9.50 children

Definitely Cheddar. You don't have to pay there if ypu don't want (except to park) as you can by-pass the "attractions" and just go for a nice walk and a picnic with a bit of a wander around the lovely little shops.

indeed

And it really is a load of old tacky tat

OrmRenewed · 04/07/2010 20:23

Wells is worth a visit - cathedral, Bishops Palace with lovely gardens (my parents might be on duty as guides ), quite nice shops. You should be able to get a bus there. Glastonbury is 'interesting' - hippy shops and abbey ruins.

katkouta · 04/07/2010 20:23

We are actually going to Pontins, (cheapy) but read such awful reviews that Im planning some days out Looks like a few days at the beach then

Cheddar over wooky any day

and Well is lovely... You gotta see the old clock .. Tis in the cathedral..

TheArsenicCupCake · 04/07/2010 20:29

Kat .. Beaches are nice.. Make sure you read the mud signs on the beaches.. They are very clear.. Do not go out into the mud.

OrmRenewed · 04/07/2010 20:32

Brean Down is an interesting place too - there are some Napoleonic buildings at the end that were used again in WWII. But of course it's a longish walk. And Animal Farm is near Brean - quite good for LOs, animals, a play barn, horse rides.

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 04/07/2010 20:33

Wookey has gone really downhill. We went last summer and felt totally ripped off.

Cheddar is lovely, as are Glastonbury Tor and the rural life museum, Wells Cathedral and local beaches. Kilve is good for fossilling, Brean and Berrow for sand. Keep off the mud!

You have Clarks Village at Street too, you can get the children's shoes cheap and something for yourself!

Have a nice holiday.

TeaOneSugar · 04/07/2010 20:38

Wookey is very expensive, and the caves won't be suitable for dc that age.

The little cheese factory tour in Cheddar village is great.

I'd second Clarks village, really lovely.

lottiejenkins · 04/07/2010 20:40

Wells Cathederal is my favourite cathederal of all, when i was at boarding school in Somerset I used to get taken out to Wells for exeat weekends and we used to stay in a hotel in Wells with an Italian retaurant attached! I was in a Songs of Praise at WC in the 1980's too!

DrZeus · 04/07/2010 20:42

We went to Wookey hole last year - £50 to look in a cave. I think you kids are too young tbh.

We stayed just up from Cheddar and that was great. The best beach we found was Burnham on Sea, just down the road from Weston-super-Mare. Quieter, but still lovely. Just over the road is a supermarket, so you don't have to fork out for extortionate lunches. In town, there are some cheap fish and chip shops if you want to treat yourself.

Weston is good for the beach but was somewhat busier. Massive beach but very windy on the day we went! We took our two boys (8 and 6) on a four seater bicycle for half an hour which was good fun.

Wells was nice to wander around - not too much for kids.

katkouta · 04/07/2010 20:54

DrZeus we are actually staying in Burnham on Sea so thats great!

Fantastic! I forgot to mention, just off the beach is the Lifeboat station. When we were there, it was open to look around. The kids were able to sit in the lifeboat hovercraft.

PS Get your bucket, spade and windbreak before you get there (premium £££ at the beach!).
