Join me in mild panic about the latest volcanic ash cloud...

So here I am, stood in my lounge, surrounded by half packed suitcases, wondering what the ash cloud has in store for us this week?

My sympathies are with anyone flying from NI/ Scotland who has had their much looked forward to holiday cancelled or postponed already this week - the cloud is headed south and it could be airports in Northern England/ Wales tomorrow. Due to fly from Bham to Tenerife on Friday so on tenterhooks to see whether we'll be affected too.

I know it's much better to be stuck at home than abroad but still very disappointing...

Trying to be philosophical as there is not much you can do about it and much better to be safe than sorry - I know lots of MNetters have been through the first cloud, what happened about your hols in the end? Did you get a refund, or are you out of pocket?

And from me too - a belated thanks OYBBK!

Ponders · 08/05/2010 21:49

Thanks from me too, kitten

(I have bookmarked your met office ash plume maps, for future panicking purposes!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2010 22:31

you are all very welcome!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2010 07:48

into Irelands airspace later today
I hope suncreams flight is ok - looks like the ash has encroached a little further into portugal than yesterdays models suggested

We are massively out of pocket from Norwegian nightmare (about £4500) - mum and dad are going to Benidorm in June - we were all laughing as we love the show - with their reasoning being that they can't face being stranded again and it's relatively easy to get back from there over land!

I am off to Crete on a package hol in July - so not bothered if we get stuck!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2010 08:05

ouch! thats a lot of money!!

QOD · 09/05/2010 08:08

yup. My travel insurance and sisters won't pay anything, mum and dads pay up to £190 total (pathetic) - we are claiming through the airline at mo but no response to initial claim, second claim they asked for a bit more info and nothing since.
We will get something back at some point
(we were also flying with Excel when they went bust - grrrrrr)

gleegeekgleek · 09/05/2010 10:48

Will be keeping an eye on this as traveling next weekend. Seems like Easyjet who we are booked with are offering refunds or transfers on affected flights and we only pay for our apartment when there so fingers crossed if it all goes wrong we won't be out of pocket, just disappointed.

Will be just my luck though....

castille · 09/05/2010 11:04

We're not quite in panic mode yet, still in the realms of a bit concerned

Sister's wedding in less than 2 weeks, half the guests are flying in at various times the week before...

AlicesWonderland · 09/05/2010 11:28

oh god wish I hadn't read this I had thought it was all over and done with

we're going in 4 weeks to bulgaria booked it a year ago and have been skint all year to afford it and the spend what happens if we can't get there will the Co-op let us go the fortnight after will we get our money back?

I think I may have to nip in and ask

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2010 12:25

seems I apologised too early last night about scottish airports. oops!!

HinnyPet · 09/05/2010 22:24

Please can we all turn the wind turbines on reverse? And send the sodding ash back to Iceland?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/05/2010 08:28

latest

our airspace is ok today. southern europe looks to get into a bit of a pickle. still not good for transatlantic flights.

gleegeekgleek · 11/05/2010 15:53

Oh blimey not looking good for Portugal - hoping the winds change by the weekend.

It's blardy freezing here - must be a northerly wind is that right OYBKK?

navyeyelasH · 11/05/2010 18:37

OYBK - thanks for all the info here thoes charts are really helpful. With the different heights I'm guessing if it's not high up, but low down you;'d still be screwed due to take off?

I'm just wondering if my dads flight from Tenerife @ 6pm tomorrow will leave??

HinnyPet · 13/05/2010 23:31

OYBK can you help me out with something?

I was looking on Newcastle airport website yesterday and read about their view on the ash cloud but today it's gone off their site.

Does that mean there is no risk from Newcastle?
Thanks!

HinnyPet · 16/05/2010 22:10

Argh...is my hol from Newcastle gonna be screwed!?!?! Don't fly til 30th but please, please ash, go away

AnyFucker · 17/05/2010 16:30

hinny, join me in praying for the ash to just go and feck orf

we fly from Manchester on the 31st

I am in agonies, tbh

I just want to knoooooowwwwww whether I get my long-awaited holiday

Usually, I like the build-up of the last few weeks immensely....but this ash thing has just spoiled all that and I just wanna cry

HinnyPet · 17/05/2010 17:58

Totally agree, AF, I am usually enjoying packing by now but I don't dare!!

AnyFucker · 17/05/2010 21:56

HinnyPet · 17/05/2010 22:17

I will keep fingers crossed .....

AnyFucker · 17/05/2010 22:22

sounding more positive, eh ?

GoldenSnitch · 17/05/2010 22:25

DH has got me panicing about our holiday at the end of July.

It'll all be over by then right???

Our first holiday since the DC's were born and it's going to be a nightmare! We're supposed to be going to Portugal. He's even worked out than we could drive it but it would take 3 days driving 9 hours a day with a 3 year old and a 7 month old who doesn't nap!! I knew there was a reason I liked Center Parcs

AnyFucker · 18/05/2010 16:22

GS...it will be fine...have you seen the new rules re. grounding of flights ?
