sounds like tough luck - you were cutting it fine with 3wks to go

and the gp might well have charged you anyway

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 24/03/2010 15:44

You have to pay for most of them. Why would you expect the NHS to provide them?

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/03/2010 15:45

You have to pay for them. If you can afford a holiday it is assumed that you can afford the injections.

expatinscotland · 24/03/2010 15:47

Ask your GP's office who else can provide them and yes, you need to pay.

My former landlords even had to pay and he was going to Africa to work for VSO (VSO reimubursed them the money they had to pay for them).

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/03/2010 15:48

I don't think you need vaccinations for Egypt do you? Is not like other parts of Africa where you need yellow fever/typhoid/hep a.

I could be talking out of my arse though.

MrsBadger · 24/03/2010 15:54

iirc it's typhoid & hep A for egypt

newmama06 · 24/03/2010 16:00

well i only posted this msg now as i was getting desperate for advice. MrsBadger: 3wks is ok as i have to get vaccination 10 before travelling and i wanted to shop around first.

OldLadyKnowsNothing: the NHS does provide the vaccination i need for egypt the vaccinations for egypt are one of the many that the nhs provide for FREE. yes we can afford a holiday but why should i have to pay for the vaccination when i KNOW get them for free and the only reason why i should have to pay is because of the Practice nurse being away on HER holiday. just had two of my friends get back from egypt and they didnt pay for vaccination and another friend had the vacc for free but ended up not going as her daughter was too scare to have injection

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 24/03/2010 16:15

You need typhoid and Hep A for Egypt. And your friends have a very generous GP.

expatinscotland · 24/03/2010 17:11

I'll never understand why people want to take little kids on holiday to places full of terrorists, tbh.

probonbon · 24/03/2010 17:14

For hep A you can have a gamma glob injection instead, I do believe. Short term and ok for a hol.

Typhoid is only 50pc efficacy anyway. I wouldn't. I haven't, actually. But that's unnecessary information, not advice!

probonbon · 24/03/2010 17:15

ps i know two people who got typhoid despite the jab

Shaz10 · 24/03/2010 17:15

I've always had to pay for my travel jabs at the GPs. Just consider it a necessary travel expense.

Phrenology · 24/03/2010 17:23

Do you know EPIS, I was just thinking that.

MrsBadger · 24/03/2010 17:55

I meant 3wks was cutting it fine to get an appointment

and there are probably more terrorists in the uk than egypt

I've been in more bomb scares in London than the rest of my travels combined

newmama06 · 24/03/2010 18:24

thanks for all the advice much appreciated. expatinscotland why would you make a stupid comment like that, there is no need! u never know where terrorist are. thanks MrsBadger i was actually caught up in the terrorism attack in london and cant believe someone can be so judgemental. my little one and my family will be safe in the hands of god. will check out all the links and suggestion given

probably for the same reason you write 'u' instead of 'you'. one is a pronoun; the other is a letter which is also a vowel.

GrimmaTheNome · 24/03/2010 18:42

We're going sailing in Greece this summer, and as its both watery and active we thought we'd better get a proper job done with the vacs. We're part way through a series - booster tetanus etc for me, combined HepA&B for all of us (which requires 3 shots for adults, 2 for DD) and typhoid yet to come for me and DD

All being done for free - hep B isn't usually but because its a combi they can do it free and are happy to do so. We were pleasantly suprised by this, we were expecting to have to pay.

The reason why it seems to me entirely sensible that the NHS should pay is that if you contract one of these diseases then it'll cost them a sight more to cure than the prevention.

newmama06 · 24/03/2010 18:48

expatinscotland: I deliberately spell it like that because i wanted to write it like that.i thought this website is meant to be giving help and advice.if U don't have anything constructive to say then please don't say anything. I came here to help help not to be attack by U. its a shame that U r so narrow mind about Egypt. its a beautiful country with lovely people. so stop going comment about my U and R...U aint worth it.Have a blessed day.

Very Christian of you, OP.

ThatVikRinA22 · 24/03/2010 18:51

they are all free at our practice, but you really shouldnt have left it with only weeks to go.

the only ones you pay for at our gp is Yellow fever and rabies.

expatinscotland · 24/03/2010 18:53

Newmama, this board doesn't work like other boards.

It's open and unmoderated.

People can comment on anything they like.

And when I see posts like yours, it's just like an invitation to party to me.

You don't dictate to others what they post.

I think people who take their young kids to places like that are irresponsible, tbh.

That's my opinion and I'm allowed to put it here.

The Lord and Lady be with you! Blessed be!

Phrenology · 24/03/2010 18:54

Oh my God, we are being overun by ill educated, NuLabour "entitled" Huns.

Dons Flak Jacket and Hard Hat.

Feels soiled.

expatinscotland · 24/03/2010 18:54

Oh, and nowhere did I 'attack' you in that post.

I wrote 'I'll never understand why people take their children . . . '

Welcome to MN.

CountessDracula · 24/03/2010 18:55

omg
you bunch of weirdos
Do you only go to skegness then??

I agree you should pay for your own travel vaccinations. They are non essential and I don't see why the NHS should be expected to foot the bill if you choose to travel to somewhere that needs vaccinations.

expatinscotland · 24/03/2010 18:56

Touche, Phrenology .
