Best West End shows for 6yo girl?

Thought I might book something for the summer holidays. Saving Lion King for when DD2's old enough to appreciate it. What else? Would Billy Elliot be suitable? Joseph? Oliver? Stomp?

Is there anything DD2 (who'll be nearly 4) would also enjoy?

(We do the Polka, Unicorn etc regularly but haven't done West End with them yet.)

Is Mary Poppins still on? I would recommend that but maybe it has finished.

franch · 21/03/2009 19:57

No it's finished - shame because they love the film.

Joseph, Sound of Music and Mamma Mia all popular here. I think we need to wait a while for Oliver and the Lion King

crumpet · 21/03/2009 19:59

Stomp I found dull after the first half hour or so.

franch · 21/03/2009 20:03

Oh she liked the film of Mamma Mia. What ages are yours crumpet? Might do Joseph ...

I took DS1 (7)and DS2 (3) both to Joseph and Sound of Music and they loved them both. We also went to a CeeBeebies live show at Wembley and they adored that. I took DS1 to a live Thomas and Friends show when he was 4 (he was a mad Thomas fan) an I think that was the best show we have been to - he raved about it for months!

MadMazza · 21/03/2009 20:05

I heard that Billy Elliott is a bit 'grown up' - quite a bit of swearing my MIL said!

franch · 21/03/2009 20:07

3yo at Joseph hooray - I'm increasingly keen. Have never seen the film of Sound of Music myself and neither have they so have no idea about that!

I bet the TV-based ones do go down well. LazyTown Live was a big hit with our 2 last year! And I have of course booked the stage show of High School Musical 2 ...

Yeah suspected that about Billy E

My dd is 7 and we took her to see The Lion King when she was 6. She loved it, especially the dancing and costumes. I wouldn;t take a child younger than 6 though, two little girls had to leave the theatre sobbing.

She now wants to see Hairspray so that is next on her list.

Dh and I are going to Billy Elliot in 2 weeks but dd is way too young yet. Joseph would be fine, it is closing soon though. Sound of Music has just finished priopr to touring.

pinkteddy · 22/03/2009 22:52

Hairspray fab! Music, dancing, costumes, dd (5) was entranced. Might be bit long for a 4 year old though, especially first half.

franch · 23/03/2009 10:35

Thanks all island & pink

sorry, just saw this - dd is 6, but saw Joseph nearly a year ago. You can get a dvd of Joseph (Donny Osmond) as well as the soundtrack (Jason Donovan), so she knew all the songs and the story before she went. She hadn't seen the dvd at that time though - it is identical in terms of set, costumes etc to the film, so you may not want to spoil the effect of seeign it live first.

franch · 23/03/2009 10:51

thanks Crumpet sounds good

Oh poo, looks like Joseph closes at end of May. (They're only taking bookings till then anyway.) Will try to go before then but was really looking for something for summer hols.

So maybe Hairspray or Mamma Mia? Both too old for DD2 ...

OP posts:
islandofsodor · 23/03/2009 18:07

Yes, Joseph is closing in May.

franch · 07/04/2009 22:16

Right, am going to book something for the summer. So far it's either Hairspray or Mamma Mia. Which could I force DD2 (4y) to sit through? I'd prefer Hairspray as have seen Mamma Mia...!

If you wait, you can book the Free Kids Tickets with London Kids Week when they specify which shows are suitable for which age.

Wicked is great!

Milliways · 07/04/2009 22:23

official site

franch · 07/04/2009 22:24

Brilliant - thanks milliways, was just looking at prices. I thought Wicked was aimed a bit older than my two?

OP posts:
Milliways · 07/04/2009 22:30

My friend took hers aged 9 & 5, they both loved it.

Personally I think 4 is a bit young for most of the shows, esp at full price!

DS saw Chitty Bang Bang at about 5, but that isn't around any more

Have you looked at the age guides?

Milliways · 07/04/2009 22:31

Just seen - High school Musical 2 is coming

and Annie

franch · 07/04/2009 22:35

Yeah you're probably right about DD2 milliways, I'm just getting impatient to hit the west end with my girls ...

Have booked HSM2 already

Didn't know about Annie - they love that too

Seems like that Official London Theatre Guide site just divides shows into adult, children, family and general?

OP posts:
franch · 07/04/2009 22:37

That's a pity, just a week's run for Annie - just as the girls go back to school

OP posts:
franch · 07/04/2009 22:40

I dismissed Wicked last summer because of this thread
