hello everyone

the title says it all really! i would be grateful for ideas for a long w/e for myself and the kids and possibly a friend with child(ren) in June. i would like to be walking distance from a sandy beach and maximum 3hrs travel time from London. open mind as to hotel or self catering - but if hotel must have interconnecting rooms and babysitting.

thanks in advance

Enid · 16/04/2005 20:11

god I really do apologise bossykate.

Anyway, I was in Poole today and it was very nice, I can recommend Bournemouth/Poole, well the whole Dorset coast actually.

Flossam · 16/04/2005 20:14

Why has no-one else suggested weston super mare? Hello? Are you all thinking straight? Or failing that Southend on Sea is a wonderful place to go for fine British cuisine....(out of a plastic tray anyway!)

WideWebWitch · 16/04/2005 20:16

Hmm, now WSM. Hmm, I wonder why I didn't suggest it Flossam?

Flossam · 16/04/2005 20:19

Sorry, WWW, was it supposed to be your secret little hideaway?!

Enid · 16/04/2005 20:21

bk, presume you know about Moonfleet Manor?

Or Babington House - no seaside but frankly who cares

bakedpotato · 16/04/2005 20:27

this looked nice when we drove past, and camber sands is lovely in a very basic sort of bucket-and-spade-and-freeze-your-nuts-off way

Come to Bournemouth! There's loads to do if it isn't beach weather. And if you visit Boscombe beach dh and I will be your personal lifeguards.

sunnyskies · 16/04/2005 21:07

Weymouth - we go there quite a lot - kids love it and so does DH

bossykate · 17/04/2005 08:19

Second Whitstable, I think the hotel owned by the Oyster Co is The Grand. Beach at Whitstable is better for beach-combing and pebble-spotting, it's a rather scrubby mix of stones and sand. Don't know of any extra special hotels in Broadstairs but it is lovely there, a proper old-fashioned, spotless English family beach.
On the island, the nicest family hotels are believed to be the Priory Court and the Seaview. Cheaper but still family-friendly are the Farringford Lodge and Sandpipers, both in slightly quieter West Wight. But as you know bk House of Marina are such a pack of tightwads that we have only ever done nose to pane inspection of these nice premises. Now, if you are looking for self-catering with meters and Barton-Fink-type decor, I know just the place

tamum · 18/04/2005 09:41

I know I'm always saying the same thing on these threads, but Lyme Regis is very nice, and has lots to do. Most of the beach is small pebbles, but there's a large sandy area near the Cobb. \link{http://www.lymebayholidays.co.uk/property-details.asp?PropertyCode=c4351&CodeSearch.x=13&CodeSearch.y=6This cottage} is lovely with a fantastic terrace looking right over the bay, but it's not that cheap and may only be available for weekly bookings. The same website has loads of choices though, and all the ones we've stayed in have been good.

tamum · 18/04/2005 09:46

Gawd, we'll try that link again, shall we? Here .

sandyballs · 18/04/2005 09:58

How about Sandyballs in the New Forest, short drive from Bournemouth. www.sandy-balls.co.uk
. Great place.

sandyballs · 18/04/2005 10:00

Will try and do a link - I'm hopeless at these.
