Thinking of booking NYC for our honeymoon in October - can anyone reccomend a hotel? At the moment I have approx 36 browers open, trying to consult expedia, travel zoo, mr&mrssmith and trip advisor - its doing my head in!

Budget not unlimited but we would like a nice hotel.

Rivington Fab

ajandjjmum · 27/02/2009 15:45

The London looks fab. I have stayed at the Sofitel, and that was quite good.

We stayed at The Library in October and it's lovely! There is complementary cheese and wine every evening, and tea/coffee and cakes throughout the day. I'd highly recommend it!

geordieminx · 27/02/2009 16:02

According to trip advisor the Library is the 2nd best hotel in NYC... out of 416

So what's the 1st best then ??

DH spends a lot of time in NYC and loves the Rivington (he loves boutique type stuff as well). Check out the 3rd pic across on the link

AND - you didn't even mention wedding/honeymoon in the thread title and I still came here

HeadFairy · 27/02/2009 20:03

I stayed at the Royalton in 2003 and it was fab, we had a fireplace in our room (it was August so no fire for us, but apparently in winter they light them) and we had a 6ft circular bath in our amazing slate bathroom. Was amazing!!!!

belladonna79 · 27/02/2009 20:08

The mandarin is lovely and the plaza is an all time classic! The Westin is nice but the area isn't as nice (near times square not the park and columbus circle)

Hope you hve a lovely time, NYC is wonderful!

HeadFairy · 27/02/2009 20:12

Are you staying in NYC the whole time? DH and I hired a car and went up to Cape Cod and the surrounding area, and it was gorgeous. There are some lovely inns around there and you can do your best Jackie O impersonation in Hyannis Port

FeelingLucky · 27/02/2009 20:14

The Chelsea Hotel - a bit grungy but cool and iconic.

geordieminx · 01/03/2009 18:38

Anyone else?

The Kitano is nice

squeaver · 01/03/2009 18:42

Soho Grand - you'll get a goldfish in your room

The W - right on Union Square

Have heard good things about the Rivington.

The Mercer's another nice boutiquey one.

The Greenwich Hotel is new and owned by Robert de Niro.

Go for a hotel in Soho - by far the best part of the city to stay in.

MrsMattie · 01/03/2009 18:45

The Soho Grand is a nice hotel and in a great area. It strikes the right balance between 'cool' and 'comfortable', imo.

If you want something kind of funky, midtown, boutiquey, I stayed in a great place called the QT in 2007. The rooms are basically one big bed and there is a pool in reception with a bar you swim up to to order your Cosmos - maybe more hen night than honeymoon, though.

To be brutally honest, as someone who has been to NYC loads, it doesn't matter. There is so much to do (and in style and luxury if you want to spend the dough) that where you lay your head at the end of each fabulous day won't matter hugely.

If you want any recommendations of things to do once there, let me know. I heart NY.

And congrats!

I wouldn't go to NYC for Honeymoon though - isn't v romantic and is dirty and busy.

I would go to Southern Italy or the Carribean or the Maldives or somewhere like that - you want relaxation not a city holiday after all the fuss of getting married.

geordieminx · 01/03/2009 18:52

MrsMattie - some recommedations would be great -we went 7 years ago, but it was a spur of the moment thing so we didnt have any time to research things - we struggled to find places to eat, museums and other bits - we did empire, ground zero, and walked round loads but that was about it? Some "special" type things would be nice?

I know what you mean about it just being a place to sleep - we'd like somewhere nice at it will be our honeymoon, but tbh we will only be in the room for a few hours every night so its not majorily important really?

Geordie - I've just given some suggestions of things to do in NY to dh's aunt and uncle (with the help of my friend in NY). Hang on a sec and I'll cut and paste.

ihearthuckabees · 01/03/2009 19:03

Hi Geordieminx. Congrats on your wedding, and for what it's worth, I think NYC is a great place to go for a honeymoon (as long as you don't mind busy and dirty ).

As you're going in October, you should go to the roof terrace of the Metropolitan Museum (check opening times as it closes early) and check out the views of Central Park with the Autumn colours. They have a bar that sells wine and nibbles, and it's very relaxing.

My fave restaurant is Marions on the Bowery and 4th street (opposite where CBGBs used to be). Great for cocktails and a true, authentic New York experience. Not swanky or expensive, but great cocktails and just enough eccentricity. Here marionsnyc.com/.

Got to run, but will try to think of some other fun things to do. (Used to live in NYC, although left 5 years ago, so am probably horribly out of date with what's cool/what's not etc).

Hire bikes in Central Park on a Sunday (park closed to traffic on a Sunday)

Empire State Building

Guggenheim Museum (opposite Central Park)

Museum of Modern Art

FAO Schwarz - toy shop

Shops: Saks, Bloomingdales (department stores), Barneys (very expensive high fashion), lots of nice shops in SoHo, the Ralph Lauren shop is very impressive and there's other very smart shops nearby.

A wander round Greenwich Village (can be combined with SoHo)

Helicopter trip - helicopters take off from near Wall Street and Ground Zero. Highly recommend this as a honeymoon treat

Statten Island Ferry (then you don't need to go up the Statue of Liberty, it takes you right past)

Restaurants

Brooklyn - River Cafe restaurant looks back over to Manhattan (like the poster from the Woody Allen film)

Union Square Cafe - one of the top restaurants, not too expensive.

Mercer Kitchen in the Mercer Hotel in SoHo (lunch or dinner if you're in SoHo)

Gotham Bar & Grill

Café des Artistes: on the Upper West Side, not far from Central Park, it?s a lovely dining room

DB Restaurant Moderne is good for pre- or post-theater. One of the better ones in that neighborhood

The 21 Club is a little fogey-ish, but is such a famous restaurant.

Chinatown in New York is way different from the one in London and definitely worth a wonder through (stay away from Canal Street, which is just tourist tat). One of the better restaurants there is Oriental Garden.

If you?re up for a trip to Brooklyn, Peter Luger remains the best steakhouse in NYC

The restaurant at the MOMA (called The Modern) is very very good.

Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Café are two of the best.

There are so many restaurants to choose from in NY to suit all food types and budgets. For the ones above well worth booking in advance particularly for a Saturday night.

When you arrive buy a copy of Time Out New York magazine.- it will tell you everything that is on

Theatre

West Side Story: revival opening in a few weeks. It?s supposed to be fantastic.

South Pacific: also a revival, won loads of Tony Awards and has gotten rave rave rave reviews from everyone, even people who hate all that old Broadway kind of stuff

Guys and Dolls is also set to open in a few weeks.

I haven?t seen it, but a lot of people really like Jersey Boys. Not sure if it?s in the West End yet

Hope this helps. Have an amazing trip.
