Thinking of booking NYC for our honeymoon in October - can anyone reccomend a hotel? At the moment I have approx 36 browers open, trying to consult expedia, travel zoo, mr&mrssmith and trip advisor - its doing my head in!

We really enjoyed the Sofitel in NY - most comfy bed I've ever slept in! Good location too for theatres and restaurants and only 5 mins from Times Square

we stayed at the library in november and it was lovely. I cannot recommend it enough Small room but that is New York. We went for lunch at Gordon Ramsay's new resturant at the London which has a set menu for about $30 was lovely.

Quick question - we live in Scotland, the only direct flight is the Continential Airways and gets into Newark - I did a quick search on MN on them, and the general opinion seems to be that they are pretty bad, also whats the transfer time/cost like into the city?

Is it better to fly down to heathrow and fly with Virgin/BA? The direct flight is about £80 more just now, but I'm thinking it may be worth it as we get more time in NYC, and dont have to hang around?

Continental aren't great, but not awful either. Surely you'd be quicker with the direct flight (I live in Scotland too, so have done the Edinburgh to Newark thing many times). Connections to Manhattan from Newark are not much longer or more expensive than from JFK (which is in deepest Brooklyn), so I'd stick with direct flight over Gatwick any day. Isn't there a new train link from Newark????

By the way, the museums and galleries are all worth a visit, and have 'pay what you like' days.

Also, a walk along Brooklyn's boardwalk is fun, and even just a stroll around some of the neighbourhoods around Prospect Park (like a mini central park) in Brooklyn. Park Slope and Carroll Gardens have cool shops and lots of nice cafes/restaurants and bars, so if you want to get away from touristy things, it's worth considering.

geordieminx · 01/03/2009 20:49

Thats what I was thinking too - with connections factored in the flight time almost doubles - I would prefer to spend as much time there as possible.

Madame - I hear what you are saying, but it just doesnt seem practicale to do Mauritus et all for 3 nights.. we looked at Venice but no direct flights from scotland. We have a 2 year old so dont want to leave him too long

The Waldorf is wonderful. Old world charm in the big apple. I loved it, the flowers in the lobby are incredible. I felt like an old fashioned movie star swooning about the lobby! I would rate it as perfect for a honeymoon.

selby · 06/03/2009 18:38

Well, I've opted for the Waldorf Astoria to celebrate DH's 40th over Easter so I hope it'll be as wonderful as it looks.

Sunshinesmith · 06/03/2009 19:06

Mrs Mattie, has given you wicked suggestions.

And by the way New York can be the most romantic city in the world... had been going for years and hold amazing memories of the city especially in the spring.

Fab restaurants, fab museums, events, shopping and great attitude....i love everything....

In fact one of my friends is on a shoestring honeymoon there and loving it although very very cold at the mo.

I love NEW YORK!!!!!!

The only hotel I wouldn; recommend is the HUDSON- the rooms are so tiny- it felt like a coffin.

The W - has amazing big rooms.

One piece of advice - don't accept a room next to a lift or an ice machine. It can be very noisy especially in very big hotels.

Also i would go to a bookshop and check the 2009 guides for the most updated info.

ENJOY!!!

Get on the New York state of mind

geordieminx · 06/03/2009 20:09

Thanks for all the suggestions!

We have booked flights, gonna wait a wee while to book the hotel, see if the prices come down nearer to the time. Have short listed the Rivington if we have £££'s spare, the W chain as the do seem lovely, and also the Chambers hotel in Soho, as that will be my married name The hilton millenium also seems really nice, and for the same price as a basic room in some of the other hotels we can have a suite there.

I absolutely adore nyc, we went 7 years ago, as our first date

Bought the Time out book last week

Bit of a hijack - we're also planning to go to NYC (for 40th) - anywhere that costs less than $450 a night that you can recommend?

geordieminx · 06/03/2009 20:55

Chambers, hilton anD w chain all com under $450 and get good reviews

sorry too much wine

Sunshinesmith · 07/03/2009 00:53

Negotiate hard - you can always haggle the prices.

Just got a letter from an European hotel we visit every year where they are offering us rates from last year in order to compensate from the declined of sterling.

or at last a pick up from airport, free champers, a few free breakfasts, etc etc

geordieminx · 07/03/2009 09:22

Thats what I thought Sunshine, but thought waiting til closer to the time might be more successful (we go oct)

Booked a deluxe Queen sized room at Waldorf a few days ago for Easter weekend for under $200 a night directly from their website
